उत्तर बंगाल में तेजी से फैल रहे जापानी बुखार से निपटने के लिए अभी तक कोई इंतजाम मेडिकल कालेज अस्पताल में नहीं किया गया है। मच्छरों से संक्रमित होने वाली इस बीमारी की चपेट में आने वाले मरीजों की संख्या में पिछले एक सप्ताह में काफी इजाफा हुआ है। मेडिसीन विभाग के अध्यक्ष का कहना है कि मरीजों की संख्या के आगे बेड कम पड़ गए हैं। लिहाजा कई मरीजों को जमीन पर जगह दी गई है। उत्तर बंगाल मेडिकल कालेज अस्पताल के मेडिसीन वार्ड में जापानी बुखार व पीला बुखार के रोगियों को भर्ती किया गया है। पचास बेडों वाले इस वार्ड में मरीजों की संख्या सौ से ज्यादा है। इसमें महिला व पुरुषों के साथ ही बच्चों की संख्या भी ज्यादा है। नेपाल, भूटान और बांग्लादेश की सीमा पर मौजूद गांवों में जापानी बुखार तेजी से फैल रहा है। बुखार के साथ सिरदर्द और बदन दर्द को साधारण बुखार समझकर गांव-देहात में झोलाछाप डाक्टरों से इलाज कराने वाले मरीज तभी मेडिकल कालेज अस्पताल पहुंच रहे हैं, जब शरीर में अकड़न की समस्या आ रही है। चिकित्सकों का कहना है कि जापानी बुखार और पीला बुखार के प्रति जागरुकता की कमी के कारण बड़ी संख्या में मरीज तब आ रहे हैं, जब स्थिति अत्यंत खराब हो जा रही है। पांच सौ नब्बे बेड की क्षमता वाले इस मेडिकल कालेज अस्पताल में मरीजों की संख्या इससे दोगुनी है। मेडिसीन वार्ड के बरामदे में भर्ती मरीजों के तड़पने की आवाज रह-रहकर गूंज रही है। राज्य सरकार ने अभी तक जापानी बुखार से निपटने के लिए कोई प्रभावी कदम नहीं उठाया है। फलस्वरूप उत्तर बंगाल को जापानी बुखार तेजी से जकड़ता जा रहा है। मेडिकल कालेज के उप चिकित्सा अधीक्षक डा. विजय थापा का कहना है कि यहां आने वाले मरीजों को चिकित्सा मुहैया कराने के लिए बेड न रहते हुए भी भर्ती किया जा रहा है।
