Horses found dead in Roane County; others quarantined

The horses were found on Friday, county officials said. Deputies said they found 14 dead horses, and the property's owner told them six horses had died earlier. A couple more horses may also be unaccounted for.

Twenty horses were rescued from the property and are being kept at a barn near Spencer. The animals are under quarantine because they were brought in from Pennsylvania last August without getting a required shot.

Authorities have launched an investigation after 22 horses were found dead on property at Seaman Fork Road in Reedy in Roane County.

Police received a report on Thursday after one of the horses died near the road. When officers went to investigate, they found the other horses. Malnourishment is suspected as the cause of death.

There were 20 horses still alive. Roane County sheriff's deputies spent the day on the farm on Saturday and seized those horses, and they are being kept at the old Spencer Livestock market, which is now closed. A deputy is taking care of the horses, but the department is asking for help to get feed and hay. Deputies are asking people not to go see the horses at the Spencer Livestock Market because they are under quarantine.

A veterinarian is assessing the health of those remaining horses.

Roane County authorities have launched an investigation after 22 horses were found dead on property near Reedy at Seaman Fork Road.
The situation will likely develop into an animal cruelty case, but police did not confirm if charges have been filed.

Police received a report on Thursday after one of the horses died near the road.

When authorities went to the rural area to investigate, they found other horses dead, from what appeared to be malnourishment.

Sources told the Hur Herald the farm had been purchased by a woman who raised horses.

Authorities indicate about 20 horses were discovered alive.

Roane County sheriff's deputies spent the day on the farm on Saturday and seized the 20 horses.

They are being kept at the closed Spencer Livestock Market building east of Spencer.

The animals are quarantined and they have been assessed by a veterinarian.

A deputy is reportedly taking care of the horses, but the Sheriff's department is asking for help to get feed and hay.

ORIGINAL STORY (1/20/13) A Reedy, Roane County woman, could be charged with animial cruelty, related to the discovery of about 20 deceased horses in the Seaman's Fork area, Liverpool Road.

Sources at the scene indicated charges could be filed in the case, but Roane County authorities or the Roane Humane Shelter could not be reached over the weekend to confirm the incident.
