WHO asks for strong monitoring to prevent spread of fake medicines

MANILA, Sept. 28 ? The World health Organization (WHO) office in Manila has called on the Department of Health (DOH) to strengthen monitoring of drugs to prevent the possible spread of counterfeit medicines in the country.
?We have evidence on the prevalence of counterfeit drugs in some countries. With this matter, the Philippine government must have proper coordination with other countries to prevent such counterfeit medicines spreading from one country to another or one region to another,? said WHO representative in the Philippines Dr. Soe Nyunt-U.
Nyunt-U said they WHO has evidence on the counterfeiting of medicines particularly in combination of therapy drugs.
He said there is a serious risk of spreading counterfeit drugs to different regions worldwide with the trend on globalization and trade.
Nyunt-U also said the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) should improve its system in drug registration, inspection and post-marketing study to avoid the threat of and spread in the country. (PNA)
