25 countries have reported influenza A(H1N1): cases in Europe rise
WHO/Europe outbreak update, 29 May 2009, 14:00 GMT
Since the update of 20 May, new laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1) have been reported in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Iceland, Romania, the Russian Federation, and Slovakia. As of 14:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) on 29 May, 25 countries had reported a total of 499 cases to WHO/Europe. Based on these figures, over 40% of cases of influenza A(H1N1) in the WHO European Region have been locally acquired.
The breakdown of laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1) in the WHO European Region is: Austria (1), Belgium (10), the Czech Republic (1), Denmark (1), Estonia (1), Finland (3), France (24), Germany (20), Greece (4), Iceland (1), Ireland (3), Israel (14), Italy (26), the Netherlands (3), Norway (4), Poland (4), Portugal (1), Romania (3), Russian Federation (3), Slovakia (2), Spain (143), Sweden (4), Switzerland (6), Turkey (2), and the United Kingdom (215).
Localized outbreaks have been identified in schools and military academies in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, and account for a substantial proportion of the recently reported cases in these countries. The spread of the influenza A(H1N1) in the WHO European Region increases the likelihood for exportation and importation within the Region; for example, in the past week Greek authorities reported two cases with recent travel history to the United Kingdom.
