On 7 March 2015, Germany notified WHO of 1 additional case of MERS-CoV infection. This is the third case of MERS-CoV reported in Germany. The 65-year-old patient, who returned to Germany from the United Arab Emirates on 8 February 2015, developed respiratory symptoms on 11 February 2015. On 19 February he was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Ostercappeln, and then on 23 February he was transferred to a hospital in Osnabr?ck, both in Lower Saxony, Germany. His current clinical condition is severe but stable.
As of 16 March 2015, local public health authorities have identified a total of 215 contacts that are being followed up.
The 2 previous cases of MERS-CoV were reported in 2012 and 2013. They were transferred from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates respectively to Germany for medical care, where the second patient died.
Globally, WHO has been notified of 1041 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV, including at least 383 related deaths.
