WHO Scientific Review on the current outbreaks of human infections with swine influenza to be held on 29 April

WHO is convening a Scientific Review on 29 April in response to requests from the scientific community for more detailed scientific information on swine influenza.


Experts from the affected countries will provide an update on the current situation and discuss what is known about the disease from a virological, epidemiological and clinical perspective.

A report from the review will be posted on the WHO swine influenza page shortly after the meeting.

WHO looking for signs of ongoing swine flu spread before going to Phase 5

TORONTO - The World Health Organization says it is looking for evidence swine flu viruses are spreading in waves from people infected in Mexico before it will say the pandemic alert level needs to go to Phase 5.

The WHO says most cases to date outside of Mexico are in people who became infected in Mexico and travelled home.

It is still waiting to see evidence of generations of spread - for instance, travellers infecting family members, who infect work colleagues and so on.

WHO says that would signal that the swine flu virus is well adapted to human spread and poses an even greater pandemic threat.

The WHO has had years of experience watching for that kind of transmission pattern with H5N1 avian flu viruses.

But to date those viruses have only spread through one or two generations of infection before petering out.
