MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Milwaukee health officials have confirmed 16 cases of whooping cough at a religious school.

Staffers at St. Matthias School discovered a pattern of illnesses during the Easter break ? and they sent notices home to parents to make them aware.

Paul Biedrzycki of the Milwaukee Health Department said the cases spread across many classrooms and several grade levels. He said whooping cough ? or pertussis ? has been simmering over Metro Milwaukee for the last 8 to 12 months...

Number of whooping cough cases continues to grow in Milwaukee

Evidence is mounting that a new vaccine is needed to protect against pertussis, as the number of cases in Milwaukee and elsewhere continues to grow among vaccinated children, a Milwaukee public health official said Thursday.

Milwaukee's largest outbreak of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in recent years started earlier this month at a south side private school and grew this week to 31 confirmed cases, up from 17 last week.

Milwaukee's total number of confirmed pertussis cases so far this year - 84 - already has surpassed the 59 cases for all of last year, said Paul Biedrzycki, director of disease control and environment health at the Milwaukee Health Department...

MILWAUKEE - Health officials are working with local schools as they deal with pertussis, otherwise known as whooping cough, in the Milwaukee area.

There are only a few cases of whooping cough at MPS schools.

At St. Matthias School on Milwaukee's southwest side, the outbreak of whooping cough seems to be winding down...

There hasn't been a new confirmed case involving a St. Matthias student in more than a week...

Whooping cough cases on rise in La Crosse

Public health officials are warning parents to take precautions after a dramatic spike in cases of whooping cough.

La Crosse County typically tallies eight cases a year. So far in 2012, there have been 16.

Cases are also up across the state. Wisconsin has 569 confirmed cases so far this year, already half way to the 1,078 cases last year...

...Last year, the county had 32 whooping cough cases. In 2010, there was the average eight. This year’s wave started in April with10 cases...

There have been three confirmed cases of pertussis — commonly known as whooping cough — in Sheboygan County and 10 more are under investigation, according to the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health.

One of the cases occurred at Urban Middle School and one was in the Kohler School District...

The Rock County Health Department has reported that, as of Thursday, three people have been identified in Rock County to have pertussis or whooping cough.

The health department notes cases have been rapidly increasing in Wisconsin, with Dane County reporting 100 cases this month...

Wisconsin is seeing widespread outbreaks of pertussis - 10 times the number of cases statewide as the number reported this time last year.

And while Milwaukee County so far this year has reported 126 cases - double the total reported for all of last year - local public health officials say the outbreak appears to be under control here...

...Statewide, almost 1,900 confirmed and probable cases have been reported so far this year, compared with 158 for the same time frame a year ago, she said...

Health officials said there are 83 reported cases of whooping cough in Marathon County--12 more than a year ago...

RACINE COUNTY ? Whooping cough cases in Racine County mirror a state outbreak trend though the number of confirmed cases locally is still low, area health officials said Friday.

Statewide, 674 whooping cough cases were confirmed from January to April this year compared with only 54 during the same time period last year. In Racine County, 36 confirmed and probable whooping cough cases were reported from January to May 8. During the same time last year, only five such cases were reported, according to Beth Kaplan, spokeswoman for the state Department of Health Services...

The Sauk County Public Health Department is asking people to get booster shots to combat a rise in cases of whooping cough.

The department reports that in the past three weeks, there have been 30 cases of whooping cough ? also known as pertussis ? in the Sauk Prairie and Baraboo areas...

...State health officials say the number of whooping cough cases reported so far this year in Wisconsin has increased tenfold.

Cases of whooping cough increase in St. Croix County

St. Croix County Health Department officials released information the afternoon of June 8 that the county has received confirmation that 12 patients have tested positive for pertussis ? commonly known as whooping cough ? since May 29.

Health officer Wendy Kramer said the county had no reported pertussis in 2011. Those reported this year have occurred in people aged 6 to 55...

SUMMARY OF CASES
? From January 1, 2012 through July 2, 2012, 2,815 cases (1904 confirmed and 911 probable) of pertussis with completed investigations have been reported among Wisconsin residents (incidence: 49.5 cases per 100,000 persons). During the same time period in 2011, only 197 confirmed plus probable cases were reported. Note: Additional cases may have occurred during recent weeks that have not been completely investigated or reported to DPH.
? The reported pertussis activity during the past 6 months is the most observed since the large pertussis outbreak during 2004-05. More than 5,600 cases were reported in 2004.
? Among the 67 Wisconsin counties that have reported cases in 2012, Dane, Outagamie, Waukesha, and Milwaukee Counties reported the greatest numbers of cases. Reported incidence of pertussis was greatest in Forest, Columbia, Outagamie, and Calumet Counties.
? Median age at cough onset was 16.4 years (range: <1 month to 91 years). More than half of all cases in each region occurred among children and adolescents aged 5 to 14 years. In the Southern region, adults aged ≥20 years accounted for 25% of all reported cases.
? Hospitalization was reported in 2% of cases with a median length of stay of 3 days (range: 1 to 13 days). The median age of hospitalized cases was 2.2 years (range: <1 month to 86 years).
? 129 cases of pertussis were reported among children aged <1 year. Among these 129 case patients, 71% were aged 6 months or less at cough onset, 1 (<1%) died, and 24 (19%) were hospitalized (for a median 4 days). 54% were up to date for age with pertussis immunizations, 22% were too young for immunization, 14% were under-immunized for age, and 10% were age-eligible for another dose but not delayed.
