An investigation team is in Dadaab, Kenya following reports of a child paralyzed by wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1). This is the first WPV case confirmed in Kenya since July 2011. The location is close to the border with Somalia, where a child was paralyzed by polio in the capital Mogadishu on 18 April. Dadaab hosts a major refugee camp, housing nearly 500,000 persons from across the Horn of Africa, including from Somalia.

An initial outbreak response is expected to start next week, following international outbreak response standards. Somalia has already conducted an emergency response in the Banadir region including and around Mogadishu.

Countries across the Horn of Africa are now at significant risk of this outbreak, due to large-scale population movements and persistent immunity gaps in some areas. In 2005, polio spread from the Horn of Africa and across the Gulf of Aden to cause a devastating outbreak in Yemen, which left 479 children paralysed for life. The adoption of international outbreak response standards and the development of new vaccines since then ? when fully implemented with high-quality vaccination operations ? have considerably reduced the severity and duration of such outbreaks.

Kenya: Polio Alert After Two Refugees Found With Virus

The Ministry of Health and the WHO are rolling out a massive emergency polio immunisation campaign in Ifo, Hagadera and Dadaab and within their host communities after two confirmed cases of wild polio virus were reported in the area.

Garissa county coordinator for health Dr Mohamed Abdikadir said two young refugee boys from the same family at the Hagadera refugee camp last week tested positive for the polio virus which paralyses its victims limbs.

"Right now we have two confirmed cases, that means in that area you have around 200 people with that virus in their body and those people can also spread it to others. Once that virus is circulating, it can spread like bushfire," he said...

Polio Outbreak Hits Dadaab Refugee Camp In Kenya

...Since the first case was discovered on 17 May, laboratory tests have confirmed that four more people have polio, a highly infectious disease caused by a virus that invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours.

The first round of vaccinations will be completed today, the agencies said. The next round, which begins in one week, will target the whole refugee population in Dadaab ? some 424,000 people. The campaign will have four rounds in total.

At the same time, the Kenyan Ministry of Health is also conducting a vaccination campaign among the host community population in North Eastern Province in close collaboration with WHO...

Situation analysis

 In the Horn of Africa, the outbreak of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) has reached 31 cases1: 25 from Somalia (primarily from Banadir region) and 6 from Kenya (Dadaab in north-eastern Kenya). This is the first WPV outbreak in Somalia since 2007 and in Kenya since 2011.
 In response to the outbreak and to prevent further spread, 3 vaccination campaigns with oral polio vaccine (OPV) have been held in Somalia, 2 each in Kenya and Ethiopia and 1 each in Djibouti and Yemen. The next campaigns are starting 30 June in Yemen, 1 July in Somalia and Kenya and 5
July in Ethiopia.

Polio has resurfaced in Kenya triggering a major alert

A disease the World Health Organisation once declared eradicated worldwide has resurfaced in Kenya triggering a major alert.

Kenya has consequently launched mandatory polio vaccination in 22 districts after the disease killed a man in a refugee camp.

The 23-year-old Somali refugee died in the Dadaab camp a month ago, Public Health director Shahnaaz Sharif said on Monday.

The five-day campaign, which started on Saturday, will cost Sh500 million.

Polio this week in Kenya

No new WPV1 cases were reported in the past week. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2013 remains 110 (100 from Somalia and ten from Kenya). The most recent WPV1 case in the region had onset of paralysis on 10 July (from Somalia).

In Kenya, the priority remains on increasing immunity levels in the Dadaab area of North Eastern province. Nearly 50% of children in this area remain under-immunized (compared to less than 5% in Kenya on the whole).

Kenya: Ministry of Health Begins Polio Campaign

THE Ministry of Health and the United Nations' agencies has embarked on a countrywide emergency polio campaign which targets to vaccinate more than 5 million people.

This follows an outbreak of the deadly disease in which 120 out 185 polio cases reported worldwide are in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. So far two persons have died and 12 others have the disease at Daadab refugee camps in Garissa county.

Director of Public Health and Sanitation Dr Shahnaaz Sharif said the campaign, which kicked off on Saturday, aims at vaccinating children aged less than five years.

He said children and adults will be vaccinated in Garissa and Wajir counties. Last month, a similar campaign was conducted in 22 counties and 4.6 million people were vaccinated.

Kenya: Take Your Children for Polio Vaccine, Says MP

MSAMBWENI MP Suleiman Dori has urged residents in his constituency and Kwale county to participate in the ongoing countrywide polio campaign. The campaign seeks to protect young children from the disease.

He was speaking at Diani Health Centre at the weekend when he officially launched polio campaign. Dori said children are the future of our country.

About 63,657 children are targeted in Msambweni and LungaLunga districts with about 93 teams having started the polio campaign in different areas.

 Kenya has completed 4 months with no new case of polio reported in the current outbreak. Total number of confirmed cases of WPV type-1 to date remains at 14. Date of onset of paralysis of the last polio case is 14 July 2013.
 Somalia reported 3 new cases during the past week raising the country?s total case count to 183. Date of onset of the last case is 9 October 2013.
 Ethiopia reported no new case during the past week. The country?s total case count remains at 6 with the date of onset of last case of 19 September.  The Horn of Africa - Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Meeting scheduled for 14-16 November in Addis Ababa has been postponed. No new dates have been announced.

EPIDEMIOLOGY
 14 WPV1 cases have been confirmed since the onset of the polio outbreak.  Most recent date of onset of paralysis for confirmed WPV1 case: 14 July 2013
 Annualized national NP-AFP detection rate is 2.51/100,000 of children aged <15years. (Central, Eastern & Rift Valley Provinces report NPAFP rate: < 2.0/100,000)
 A total of 553 AFP cases were reported since January 2013. Silent districts are 26 (9%).

Kenya declares polio a public health emergency

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 23 ? The government has now declared the outbreak of polio in Kenya as a public health emergency.

In its eight meeting at State House Nairobi, the Cabinet noted that there has been a re-emergency of the disease despite its elimination in 1984...

...The vaccination campaign which will go for three months targets to reach close to 15.3 million children.

Earlier, Health Ministry had raised alarm over high threats of the spread of the disease in Western province, Turkana and North Eastern.
So far over 10 polio cases have been reported this year.
