County issues health alert for whooping cough outbreak

A health alert about a potential outbreak of whooping cough was issued today by the La Crosse County Health Department.
Twelve whooping cough or pertussis cases have been reported since the first of the year and the illness seems to be spreading throughout the county, said Traci Lien, La Crosse County public health nurse.
Most of the cases are children ages 8 to 11 who were immunized but contracted the bacterial infection any way, Lien said. The children attend various schools and day care centers in the area.
A 3-year-old who attends a day care center was also diagnosed with whooping cough. No deaths or hospitalizations have been reported...
