County issues health alert for whooping cough outbreak

A health alert about a potential outbreak of whooping cough was issued today by the La Crosse County Health Department.

Twelve whooping cough or pertussis cases have been reported since the first of the year and the illness seems to be spreading throughout the county, said Traci Lien, La Crosse County public health nurse.

Most of the cases are children ages 8 to 11 who were immunized but contracted the bacterial infection any way, Lien said. The children attend various schools and day care centers in the area.

A 3-year-old who attends a day care center was also diagnosed with whooping cough. No deaths or hospitalizations have been reported...

Number of whooping cough cases levels off in La Crosse Co.

LA CROSSE, Wis.- The number of whooping cough cases in the La Crosse area has leveled off.

Last week, we reporter that 12 cases had been confirmed so far this year. The La Crosse County Health Department says since then, they've seen no increases in cases and more people have come in to get vaccinated...

Case of Whooping Cough Confirmed at St. Monica School

Health officials say the infection is highly contagious, and cases have been confirmed in Milwaukee, Mequon and Waukesha County.

Local health department and school officials confirmed an eighth-grade student at St. Monica School was diagnosed with whooping cough Thursday.

North Shore Health Department Director Jamie Berg said whooping cough is highly contagious, and cases have recently been confirmed in Mequon, Milwaukee and Waukesha County. The health department, which serves seven North Shore communities, also confirmed two cases in Glendale in November.

The Whitefish Bay catholic grade school sent out a letter from the health department explaining whooping cough to parents Thursday, and so far, Berg said no parents have called with any questions. The infected student is home from school completing antibiotic treatment.

The Jefferson County Health Department says they're investigating approximately 15 probable or confirmed cases of whooping cough. An increased number of whooping cough cases has recently been reported across the state, with a number of cases in Menomonee Falls, Racine, Milwaukee, and Mequon-Thiensville in November and December.

The Wisconsin State Department of Health Services says so far this year, there have been 327 whooping cough cases reported in the state, compared with 296 cases in all of 2010.

Second case of whooping cough diagnosed at St. Monica's School

WHITEFISH BAY- TODAY'S TMJ4 is reporting that the second case of whooping cough has been diagnosed at St. Monica's School.

In a letter issued to parents by Principal Julie Robinson, she said that the school has been informed that a sixth grader has been diagnosed with pertussis. The letter states, the student and family are being treated by their physician accordingly...
