Warnings issued as mumps cases rise at UW-Madison

Confirmed mumps cases are on the uptick at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and one to two students are showing up daily at campus health clinics with possible symptoms of the contagious viral illness, according to the university.

The number of confirmed cases — seven within the past few weeks — is relatively small. But all were fully immunized as children with two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, according to Craig Roberts, epidemiologist for University Health Services. While most people immunized against mumps are protected for life, some may still get it due to waning immunity.

UW-La Crosse has one confirmed and two suspected case of mumps, which causes painful swelling of salivary glands in the cheek and jaw areas.

Statewide, there were 14 confirmed mumps cases as of Friday — the most since 2007, when there were 54 confirmed and probable mumps cases for the whole year. A huge mumps outbreak occurred in 2006, when the state saw 842 cases, according to Dan Hopfensperger, director of the Wisconsin Immunization Program at the state Department of Health Services...

Cases of the mumps are popping up in Wisconsin, for the first time in more than a year, and one of them is in Brown County.

An illness that was well controlled for many years is making a comeback.

Mumps is a virus infection that has a vaccine to prevent it, but no available medical treatment if you get it. Last year, nobody in Wisconsin contracted Mumps, but there are 51 people in Wisconsin affected so far this year.

Lincoln County Health Nurse Kristi Krombholz says the sick range from six months old to 53 years old, and 59 percent of the cases are college students...
