A MIDDLE-aged woman with no underlying health problems has become Ireland's latest swine flu fatality.

The unnamed woman is understood to have died from suspected swine flu in a Cork hospital in the past week.

The woman had been treated in hospital for 48 hours but her condition deteriorated dramatically and she died despite desperate efforts by doctors to stabilise her.

It is the first suspected death in the Cork area this year involving the human strain of swine flu.

The Irish Independent understands that at least one other patient remains in a serious condition in a Cork hospital with a suspected case of the virus.
