Territory to require proof of vaccination at many venues beginning Saturday

The Yukon government has declared a state of emergency, announcing new health regulations aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19, including a proof-of-vaccination requirement set to take effect on Saturday.

The declaration came after the territory reported 80 new COVID-19 infections diagnosed over a three-day period between Friday and Monday, for a total of 169 active cases.

The territory says it is moving rapidly to implement a proof-of-vaccination system for a range of settings, including restaurants, ticketed events, fitness facilities and personal services businesses, as well as faith-based and cultural gatherings.

It says the new measures also include mandatory masks in all indoor public settings and outdoor public settings where physical distancing isn't possible, as well as capacity limits on different types of indoor and outdoor gatherings.

"We are seeing a resurgence of COVID-19 in the territory and we need to take immediate action to protect the health and safety of Yukoners," said Premier Sandy Silver in a news release...

WHITEHORSE — The Yukon government says another person has died after contracting COVID-19, bringing the territory's pandemic death toll to 11.

In a statement, Yukon reported 41 new cases of COVID-19 diagnosed between Wednesday and Friday for a total of 156 active infections.

Most of the new infections are in people who live in Whitehorse, where the acting public health officer has said cases were widespread and untraceable.

The latest case numbers come as a proof-of-vaccination requirement for a range of businesses, events and services is set to take effect in Yukon starting Saturday...

WHITEHORSE -- Yukon's acting top doctor says COVID-19 cases appear to be plateauing following a spike early this month.

Dr. Andre Corriveau, acting chief medical officer of health, says that with new cases hovering around 30 per day, the case count remains high but the infection curve appears to be levelling off.

There are 157 active cases and six people are in hospital, while a total of 1,322 cases have been confirmed to date and 11 people have died since the pandemic began...

The small community of Teslin, Yukon, has 18 active cases of COVID-19, according to the latest numbers released by health officials.

Exposure notices have also been expanded for the local school.

Teslin, with a population of just under 500 people, now has the most active cases of any rural Yukon community. Whitehorse continues to have the highest number of active cases, with 92 as of Wednesday.

The other active cases on Wednesday were in Haines Junction, Pelly Crossing and Watson Lake, with two each, and a single case in each of Beaver Creek, Carcross, and Carmacks...

...As of Thursday morning, Yukon had 114 active cases of COVID-19, with 15 new cases confirmed since Wednesday morning. The active case count has been steadily lowering in recent days...

Yukon's acting chief medical officer says cases in the territory are generally on the decline, but the territory is entering a "fragile period" where his department needs to be careful with how and when they lift restrictions.

André Corriveau didn't share a date for when the COVID-19 state of emergency will lift.

"It's important to know that we shouldn't let our guard down," Corriveau told opposition members in the Legislature Monday afternoon. "[The active case count] remains high and still has an impact on our fragile health-care system." ...

A fourteenth death has been reported in the Yukon connected to COVID-19.

The Yukon's acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott reported the death of a Yukon citizen in a news release Thursday. The first death in the territory was reported in October 2020.

"I am deeply saddened to report this death. My sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of this individual. Out of respect, we will not be releasing any additional information," Elliott stated.

There were 62 active cases of COVID-19 in the territory as of Thursday...
