New cholera outbreak in Zambia

Lusaka - Cholera has broken out in northern Zambia this week, with at least 30 cases recorded in the past three days, a health official said Wednesday.

Zambia: Suspected Cholera Claims Four Lives in Chipili

FOUR people have died from a diarrhoeal disease suspected to be cholera that has broken out in Chipili District of Luapula Province.
Chipili Member of Parliament (MP) Davies Mwila confirmed this in an interview yesterday after he visited the affected areas.
"Four people have died at Kabongo Village in Chipili but the district health office is yet to establish whether or not it is from a cholera outbreak," he said...
"All Provinces and districts in the country have been empowered to manage the outbreak of at least fifty cases of infectious diarrheal diseases.
This follows cholera outbreak in Lupaula province last week that has claimed four lives.
Health minister Joseph Kasonde has told a media briefing that all the provinces were physically checked on epidemic preparedness for diarrheal diseases.
Dr Kasonde says districts sharing boarders with other countries have been instructed to create health desks at each border point.
...Among the affected areas, Nchelenge district has recorded seven admissions with eight under treatment, Mwense three admissions with three under treatment, Mwansa had no admissions but three under treatment.
In total Luapula province has recorded ten new admissions while fourteen are under treatment."
"Cholera has broken out at Mikango Barracks in Lusaka East affecting a number of households forcing military health personnel to set-up make-shift treatment centre just outside the entrance to the army barrack.
