"Zimbabwe: 42 Cases of Typhoid Recorded in Mbare

Harare City has recorded 42 cases of typhoid following a week of intermittent water supplies in Mbare, a city official has said.

Health services director Dr Prosper Chonzi said the cases were recorded during the week ending March 3 when taps in the area ran dry.

..."Our main worry was that the cases were concentrated in one area- Mbare- and they peaked in one week when there was no water supplies," Dr Chonzi said.

He, however, said the cases had since started going down as water supplies had been restored in the area.

Harare residents and other small towns continue to get intermittent water supplies and the majority of community boreholes have since broken down. Poor sanitation and inadequate water supplies trigger diarrhoeal diseases.

Government has also recorded three cases of cholera in Beitbridge and one case has since been confirmed.

This is the first case of cholera to be recorded this year."

Suspected typhoid outbreak shuts Zimbabwe courts

HARARE,- Zimbabwe has shut down the capital's main courthouse after a suspected outbreak of typhoid affected magistrates and court officials, state media reported on Saturday.

The complex in Harare has had no water for more than two weeks due to a fault in the system that wasn't properly fixed...

THERE are fears of an imminent outbreak of the deadly typhoid disease, following widespread incidences of dysentery in Harare's densely populated suburbs where people are drinking water from unprotected sources.

The conditions that spread typhoid are the same as the ones that spread dysentery.

City council health director, Prosper Chonzi confirmed the outbreak of dysentery, saying at least 122 cases had been reported in the last two weeks in Harare. He added that there had been an increase in people coming to the city clinics for treatment.

But other health officials believe the figure was conservative, as some people were not seeking treatment from city clinics.

So far 382 people have died from diarrhoea since the beginning of the year.

According to a weekly surveillance report produced by the Ministry of Health and Child Care recently, the cumulative figure for cases of diarrhoea reached at least 420 130.

For the week ending October 10, 14 deaths were recorded in one week and of that number, six were children under the age of five years.

Three of the deaths were from Harare Central Hospital, while the rest were from Bulawayo, Beitbridge, Masvingo, Chikomba and Mashonaland East.

84 typhoid cases reported

84 suspected cases of typhoid have been reported in Regina Coeli in Nyanga district.

However, there have been no deaths.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care weekly report on epidemic, prone diseases, deaths and public health events, there were 85 cases of typhoid reported in week 49 ending on the 8th of December 2013.

Meanwhile, the report reveals that 9 common diarrhoea deaths were recorded, 7 of them being children under the age of five.

Three deaths were recorded in Mbire district, three at Parirenyatwa hospital in Harare, two at Harare hospital and a single death at Chitungwiza Central Hospital.
