Re: Average age of recent confirmed H7N9 cases is 49

But median age (modal value) is 57: the value at the centre of the series.

3.5 - 30 - 35 - 36 - 39 - 57 - 62 - 64 - 65 - 67 - 80

I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X XI

________________modal____________________

Average: 49

Median: 57

Range: 3.5 to 80

So the over 40 are overrepresented.

Re: Average age of recent confirmed H7N9 cases is 49

I prefer the measurement of average.

Even if the outliers (the high and the low) of 3.5 (rounded to 4) and 80 are taken out of the equation, the average age is 49/50.

I believe, without calculating, this age is younger than the average age of cases since the beginning of the year. Also, none of these cases has died as of this date.

This might indicate younger people mount a more effective immune response and /or treatments are more effective now, or on a younger age group.

Re: Average age of recent confirmed H7N9 cases is 49

Median age represent an indication of frequency of case distribution: all ages are not equally represented in a population demographics. An average value may match well if all ages are equally represented but not in the case of a population where youngsters are more prevalent that elderly.

Ie if over 50s are under-represented in a population (less than 50%) than a median value above 50% may indicate an higher prevalence in this class of age...
