TORONTO -- Ontario reported a rise in the number of patients battling COVID-19 in the province’s intensive care units Thursday, as it also marked a single-day increase in the number of new cases.
Health officials confirmed 1,824 new cases of the novel coronavirus after several days of case numbers above the 1,700 mark, but clarified that the number might be slightly skewed due to a data processing error.
The province suggested that today’s case total might have been smaller if the data processing error had not occurred. Due to the error, officials said the province’s case total on Thursday included 127 cases from Middlesex-London Health Unit, which counted infections reported over the past three days.
On Thursday, officials also reported that 14 more people have died due to COVID-19. Just the day before, the province stated that 35 more people died due to the disease. Most of the patients who died were residents of long-term care homes.
More than 600 people are battling the disease in hospitals across the province with 195 patients now in intensive care. Of those patients, 107 are on ventilators...

Provincial health officials logged 1,890 more infections of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday.
Wednesday’s case count shows an increase from Tuesday when 1,676 new infections were recorded. Before that, Ontario saw three days of record-breaking case counts with 1,925 new cases logged on Monday, 1,924 logged on Sunday and 1,859 logged on Saturday.
Of the new cases logged on Wednesday, 517 were in Toronto, 471 were in Peel Region and 187 were in York Region. There were also 97 new cases found in Hamilton, 96 in Halton Region, 94 in Windsor-Essex, 75 in Durham Region, and 64 in Waterloo Region.
There have been a total of 132,800 COVID-19 cases confirmed in Ontario since the beginning of the pandemic, including deaths and recoveries.

Ontario reported another 2,275 cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, a single-day record that comes with an important caveat, according to the province.
Changes to how Public Health Ontario collects and analyzes cases mean that today's figure includes 2.5 extra hours of data from several health units, artificially inflating the total number — but by how much is not yet clear.
The new cases include 711 in Toronto (the local count in the city was unaffected by the data changes), as well as 586 in Peel Region, 185 in Windsor-Essex and 154 in York Region.

Ontario's hospitals called for new 28-day lockdowns in all regions currently in the red tier of the province's COVID-19 restriction framework on Thursday, as the Ministry of Health reported a record-high 2,432 new cases.
"Ontario remains firmly caught in the grasp of a major second wave of COVID-19. Daily infection is now above 2,000 new cases per day. Hospitalization is increasing rapidly, as is the occupancy of intensive care units," the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) said in a statement.
It added that the situation has become "extremely serious." The OHA's board of directors held an emergency meeting Wednesday to discuss ongoing challenges to Ontario's health-care system.
"We are now in the holiday season and if members of the public choose to ignore public health measures and gather outside their households, the consequences risk overwhelming Ontario's hospitals," the statement continued.
As a result, the OHA said it must "reluctantly and with deep regret" ask the provincial government to "implement and robustly enforce" four-week lockdowns in all public health units where the weekly incidence rate is 40 per 100,000 or more, a key threshold for the red tier...

Premier Doug Ford's government is considering a lockdown across southern Ontario from Boxing Day until Jan. 11, as COVID-19 cases in the province reach record highs, CBC News has learned.
Multiple sources in and outside government who are aware of the proposal say that the lockdown plan to be put to a meeting of Ford's cabinet Friday afternoon is similar to what will take effect in Quebec after Christmas Day.
Quebec is closing all non-essential businesses and issuing a mandatory work-from-home order for nearly all office employees until Jan. 11, and putting all schools online-only for the first week that classes resume in the new year.
Northern Ontario would be excluded from all the lockdown measures, say the sources, who have knowledge of the plans and spoke to CBC News on condition they not be named.
The precise closures and restrictions in the widespread lockdown have yet to be decided, the sources say. However, one government source says in-person classes at schools would not resume in the areas under lockdown until Jan. 11
Another source aware of the proposal describes it as a modified version of Stage 1, the restrictions that existed across Ontario immediately after the first lockdown was lifted earlier this year. That source also says the government is considering imposing stricter measures in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas than in the rest of the lockdown zone.
All the sources say no decision has been made by cabinet and the lockdown measures are unlikely to be announced before Monday.
A senior government official, however, told CBC News that the sources are getting ahead of themselves...

TORONTO -- Ontario has logged more than 2,300 new cases of COVID-19, as well as 27 more deaths.
Provincial health officials recorded 2,357 new infections of the novel coronavirus on Saturday, which is a slight increase from the 2,290 cases logged on Friday.
Before that, 2,432 new cases were confirmed on Thursday, 2,139 on Wednesday and 2,275 on Tuesday.
The province’s seven-day average for number of cases recorded is now 2,158.
Saturday’s case count brings the total number of lab-confirmed cases in Ontario to 153,614, including deaths and recoveries.
With the 27 new deaths confirmed by health officials on Saturday, Ontario’s death toll is now 4,125.
Health officials deemed 1,992 more cases across the province to be resolved as of Saturday, bringing Ontario’s number of recovered patients up to 131,282.
There are currently 18,207 active cases of the novel coronavirus in the province...

Hospitals in the Greater Toronto Area are calling on the Ontario government for "stronger" lockdown measures this holiday season as the province logs more than 2,000 new cases of COVID-19 for the sixth consecutive day.
Hospitals across the GTA say they are fearful if restrictions aren't tightened, a surge in cases will follow.
The joint statement was released on Sunday by hospitals in Toronto and neighbouring regions of Durham, Halton, Peel and York.
The letter, in collaboration with the Ontario Hospital Association, is urging the Ford government to implement tightened restrictions during the holidays, as hospitals deal with growing numbers.
Staff are grappling with increasing numbers of COVID-19 patients in hospitals while also assisting in other settings such as long-term care homes, the statement says.
"These trends show no sign of slowing — in fact, a surge in cases following the holiday season is expected to make the situation even worse," it reads.
"We recognize that lockdown measures are challenging for many members of our communities, but we cannot afford to put patients and health-care workers at further risk."...
