In a lawsuit filed Thursday, attorney Matthew Moore, of Boca Raton, Florida’s The Berman Law Group, alleged China’s failure to report and contain the virus more quickly, or disclose the actual number of cases, created “essentially a giant Petri dish” in the region near Wuhan, sparking the global COVID-19 outbreak. The case alleges claims of negligence, emotional distress, public nuisance and strict liability for “conducting ultrahazardous activity.”
“The PRC and the other defendants knew that COVID-19 was dangerous and capable of causing a pandemic, yet slowly acted, proverbially put their head in the sand, and/or covered it up for their own economic self-interest,” the complaint says. “The defendants’ conduct has caused and will continue to cause personal injuries and deaths, as well as other damages.”

From https://patents.google.com/ Search N99 masks - one suggests a felted wool layer and another discusses the use of biocides on an outer layer. The surgical masks have a waterproof outer layer and you can buy waterproofer that you can spray on fabric. I also wonder if there is a copper based spray that could be used on an inner layer - perhaps the wool felt - as a biocide. I have read the coronavirus is not viable on copper. You can buy fabric that has copper threads in but some of these are encased and would not work.
I am not suggesting anyone breaches the claims of these patents - just that we consider different ways to achieve a safe mask. I definitely think the duck bill style is an excellent shape. When you are working hard in a mask the last thing you want is you nose stuck up against the fabric.

Cartski I think the exercise time is a compromise between what they know to be optimum and what they think people will attempt. Tell them 90 mins and they will watch the TV news, tell them thirty and you have a fighting chance they will actually do something. I thought the same thing while reading the Imperial letter. If I had shown almost anyone a pandemic model predicting 8 to 30 patients competing for each ICU bed last year they would have assumed I had no idea what I was talking about and have ignored what I was saying. For each step there is a 'teachable moment' and it is for the risk communication experts to identify it and use it to the full. If the shut down measures were introduced too early I suspect they would have been resented and flouted which may have made matters worse.

@ Gjs47, assuming it wont compromise your materials, a 10-20 minute soak in bleach at 500ppm as per WHO disinfection for bedding, followed by a hot wash and line drying in the sun would be prefereable to relying on time isolation IMO

I'm making positive pressure masks: fitting a vac bag over the open end of a bucket. Setting up computer fan to run air through a 12 UVC aquarium filter to help sterilize the air that get drawn in through the vac filter. Then another inline fan fitted to an outlet on the 'sterilized' [knowing this is an imperfect setup but better than nothing] that takes the scrubbed air up a tube that I'm feeding into a diving mask with built in snorkle
This way I'l have a face visor, no moisture build up and a constant supply of [theoretically] clean air.
I'm considering otaining more clear tubing to fitinside the uv bucket to force the air to travel a longer path in contact with the UV before being fed to the mask.

As a Respiratory Therapist, when I think of aerosols, I'm thinking all of what you said plus Albuterol aerosol treatments given routinely in the E.R. to anyone and everyone coming in with Respiratory distress or wheezing. These therapies are given via mask or mouthpiece and are created to produce the perfect micron of particle size to carry a drug (or a virus) into the distal airways.... the problem is, the aerosol also is exhaled into the room and can carry the suspended virus all over the Emergency room. This happened in Toronto with SARS along with the use of high flow oxygen masks which also served to catapult the virus for yards around. That's how one patient ended up infecting so many others in the same triage area. E.R.s will need to rethink the way they have always treated these patients. That's just my take on it.

I made up this door sign for those of you who want to keep delivery ppl or others from intruding on your quarantined space (good for others like elderly, cancer patients, transplantees, etc) I got the content from my DH who needed to share some with ppl in our community. Nika, making a sign like that is a very good idea. As the number of cases continues to climb we now need to start taking proactive precautions.

I believe, albeit through my frail memory, that the “aerosol” part was better explained in the pre-print regarding “nuclei” particles, that they do fall eventually and the half-life is much shorter duration.

Does this make sense? Building on the recent NEJM article on aerosol transmission, this article seems to say (sorry, my French is weak) that researchers in France have found that pollution levels allow the COVID particles to adhere to fine dust and be suspended much longer.

12-year-old girl with coronavirus is on a ventilator and fighting for her life
Emma, a 12-year-old girl, is "fighting for her life" in an Atlanta hospital after testing positive for the coronavirus, according to her cousin.
Justin Anthony told CNN that Emma was diagnosed with pneumonia on March 15 and tested positive for coronavirus on Friday night. As of Saturday, she was on a ventilator and is currently in stable condition, Anthony said.
Emma had no pre-existing conditions. She has not traveled recently and it's unknown how she contracted the virus, according to Anthony.
