THE Australian and British high commissioners have issued travel advisories to their citizens on its website of the dengue fever outbreak in Fiji.

The Australian High Commission updated its travel advisory on Tuesday of the dengue fever outbreak in the Central Division, particularly in Suva.

The advisory contained new information in the travel advisory summary and under health of the increase in confirmed cases of dengue fever.

It had an "exercise a high degree of caution" for Suva...

THE World Health Organization says the number of dengue fever cases would increase in the coming months.

An Information Ministry statement on Friday night said the Health Ministry had recorded 3330 confirmed dengue cases.

At a general practitioners' seminar in Suva yesterday, the national adviser for communicable diseases, Dr Mike Kama, said there were 6659 suspected dengue fever cases recorded as of February 16.

Dr Kama said of these suspected cases, 2589 were tested positive while two confirmed and two suspected dengue deaths were recorded by the health authorities...

The Vanuatu student and working community here in Suva are in a state of shock as they mourn the tragic loss of one of their own, Markson Tetaun of Wowo village in North Malekula.

He died at the Colonial Memorial Hospital around 5am g ? local time ? on Tuesday this week.
Tetaun was admitted at the Colonial Memorial Hospital (CWM) on Saturday (February 15) diagnosed with dengue fever. He died from internal bleeding when the disease developed into its life threatening stage known as dengue hemorrhagic fever.

He becomes the third victim of the outbreak of dengue fever here in Fiji. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

This was revealed in a statement by the Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma yesterday.

No other details of the deaths have been released.

EIGHT people have died from dengue fever as of February 28.

This was confirmed by national advisor communicable disease Dr Mike Kama at a presentation at USP yesterday.

Dr Kama said as of February 28, with the period of data collection from October last year to February this year, eight people had died from the mosquito-borne illness.

He revealed a further three deaths were also being investigated.

Dr Kama said as of February 28, 9825 of suspected cases were reported nationwide...

A TWO-month old baby is the youngest victim to have died from dengue fever.

This was confirmed by Dr Devina Nand of the Ministry of Health.

As of October last year to the end of February this year, eight lives have been claimed because of dengue fever.

Dr Nand said of the eight cases, six were from the Central Division and one each in the North and Western divisions.

Dr Nand said 50 per cent of the deaths were children.

Fiji's Health Department has confirmed 11 people have died and over 10,000 others have been infected during an outbreak of dengue fever.

The department's launched a major campaign to get rid of possible breeding areas for mosquitoes which carry the disease.

The Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma says the outbreak involves the type-3 strain of dengue fever which has never been seen before in the country.

"The outbreak was detected in mid December, this is a dengue type-3 outbreak and this is new for Fiji," he said.

70,000 in two weeks

MORE than 70,000 people presented themselves at hospitals and health centres across the Western Division over the past two weeks.

Of this, more than 5600 were being viewed as suspected dengue fever cases and about 900 diagnosed as confirmed cases of the mosquito-spread virus.

The staggering figures prompted Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki to call a press conference yesterday where he called on the public to take seriously the threat it posed on lives...

Health official, Dr Mike Kama has now confirmed 12 deaths and 11359 confirmed cases of dengue.

At a press conference this afternoon, Kama said most of the deaths were reported in the Central Division.

“This is data largely from government health facilities, we have our general practitioners on board, these numbers may go up from next week, because they have come up on board. But we will see what will happen in the next few weeks if our prevention activities are as effective as it should be from the clean up campaigns that are occurring nationwide.”

Four deaths investigated as dengue in Fiji

Four more deaths are being investigated if related to the dengue fever outbreak as Fiji's Ministry of Health today confirms the youngest victim was two-and-a-half months old and the oldest, 65.

In the past week, 4.087 new clinically suspected cases were recorded, the majority recorded in the eastern division.

The figure brings to 15,446 the total number of suspected dengue cases that have been reported to the Health Ministry as at 20 March 2014 since the outbreak was identified on 13 December 2013.

THE Namosi Provincial Council meeting yesterday heard that the province has recorded 107 dengue cases.

It also heard that 14 cases were recorded at Wainadoi and 11 cases in Nasasa from January 2 to March 13 this year, acting provincial administrator Iakobo Waqanidrola revealed at the meeting.

In his presentation, Mr Waqanidrola said there were 10 areas in the province identified to have serious cases of dengue. He said Nabukavesi had six reported cases, Tokotoko area had seven cases, Vuninokonoko had five cases, Wainividio, Makosoi and Vunibau had six cases while Calia reported nine cases...

THE admittance of six dengue patients at Rakiraki Hospital in the past 10 days means dengue is on the rise again in the province, says Ra Health Inspector Rakesh Chandra.

"This means people are still not clearing the potential breeding sites from their compounds," he said.

"To date 58 confirmed cases have been recorded in Ra but already six have been admitted this month despite the intervention programs being aggressively carried out over the two months."...

Fiji health authorities are battling still battling a major epidemic of dengue fever that is concentrated on the main island of Viti Levu.

There are 25,300 cases of dengue that has claimed 15 lives since last October.

The National Advisor for Communicable Disease in the Fiji Ministry of Health, Dr Mike Kama says the epidemic has been controlled through the work of the health department, international donors and local communities.
