Health Officials Investigate Measles Infection

A 15-month old was diagnosed with measles.

The infected child visited the local hospital twice. Officials hope now new cases will come forward.

Public health officials in Kainuu and Tampere have launched an investigation into the case of a 15-month old Kainuu child who was diagnosed with measles.

However, the public health watchdog the National Institute for Health and Welfare THL says the source of the infection may be difficult to trace.

Last Friday officials in Kainuu and Tampere began anti-contagion measures, including running tests on the infected infant, who had shown symptoms of the disease for more than one week. The THL estimates that scores of others may already have been exposed to infection. Among them officials are tracking unvaccinated children, pregnant women and individuals with weakened immune systems....

Unvaccinated child catches measles

A young child in the Kainuu region in Finland has come down with measles in mid-March.

According to the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), the child might have passed the disease on to other people in Tampere on the 15th and 16th of March and later in Kainuu all the way through to March 21st.
Officials have been in contact with people who may have been exposed to the sick child at the time. The child is believed to have caught the disease while abroad.

Head physician Pekka Ruuska at the Kainuu Central hospital, says that it is very unlikely that there will be an actual epidemic of measles in Finland, because of the widespread vaccine coverage against the disease...

Four adults and two children have been diagnosed with measles in the Helsinki region and elsewhere in the province of Uusimaa.

Cases of measles have in recent years been very rare in Finland due to the comprehensive vaccination programme in the country.

An estimated 97 percent of the population has been vaccinated against the measles virus. Despite this however, nine people have already been diagnosed with the illness so far this year. Those who have contracted the virus have either not been vaccinated at all or only recieved one dose of the vaccination...

Ten cases of measles diagnosed in Finland this year
Worries growing that the once-eradicated illness is making a comeback in Finland and Europe


It is only early May, but already ten people have caught measles in Finland this year. This is twice the number of individuals that were infected with the illness in the whole of 2010. A similar tendency is evident elsewhere in Europe as well.

The National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) reported on Tuesday that six people have contracted measles in Finland since mid-April. All of them are from the area of the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS). On Thursday, a seventh case was detected in the same region.
Earlier in the spring, three cases were discovered in Kainuu Province, further north.

The cases reveal that measles is attempting to make a comeback in Finland. The Kainuu cases were suspected of having originated from the Baltic States, but the HUS area incidents seem to be of domestic origin...
