I have been attempting to track the US deaths and to compile as much clinical information about them as I can from the limited press reports. This has been hard and tedious work as those of you who have attempted to do this too can attest.

There has been some thought voiced on this thread about organizing the data in a more complete form than it is currently is in. The information posted below is my rudimentary attempt to do just that. I do not suggest that this is the best way to do this, it is just one way that I as a physician thought would be of interest.

My work is terribly incomplete and no longer current given the vast increase in new US deaths over the past week. I simply have not been able to keep up!

I have been maintaining the data in MS Access but don't know how to post it in a way that looks right so I exported it to MS Excel and posted it in this way. If you are interested in looking at it, I suggest you copy the data, open MS Excel and choose "paste special" to have it format into proper columns. Then, it can be converted into an MS Access file by exporting it into that form. I think MS Access is the best way to collect the data but this is just a suggestion.

I can't manage this data any longer but if anyone is interested in adopting this data and working on it alone or as a group, have at it. I am sure there are better ways to do this than the way I choose and have no objection to those who use this data to change, organize it better, or add or delete new categories. For instance, one thing that is missing are links to the original data report(s) which would be an important addition.

Since April there have had about 100 deaths, 1,000 hospitalizations and 125,000 cases of swine flu in the US.

The number of deaths used is confirmed deaths reported in the media (as complied on FTs).

The number of hospitalizations is based on CDC data from 9June2009 (Leaked CDC data).

The number of those ill with flu in the US since April 2009 is a guess based on old CDC data of 100,000 plus another 25,000.

What is the incidence of death AKA the case fatality rate (CFR) for this current strain in the US based on these guesses?
100/125,000 = 0.0008
or about 1 in 1250 people who became ill with swine flu this spring and summer in the US died from this infection.

Those that were hospitalized due the swine flu in the US this year experienced severe morbidity due to their infection, its complications and treatment. The incidence of severe disease based on these guesses is:
1000/125,000 = 0.008
or about 1 in 125 people with swine flu in the US during this "mild" epidemic were so ill they required hospital care that carried with it significant morbidity.

Jim I had the same reaction looking at those photos, I feel guilty for counting them too. but I believe we have a moral obligation to track and share this information. maybe if the 15 people in those pictures had known what was happening in this country, they would have protected themselves, and they would still be alive today.
