DOH Investigates Possible Big Island Dengue Fever Cases

Two potential cases of dengue fever on the Big Island are being investigated by the Hawai?i State Department of Health.

A DOH spokesperson told Big Island Now that the two possible cases involve Big Island residents.

The unidentified, potentially infected individuals are recovering at home. DOH assessed areas that could be potential exposures areas for mosquito activity and did not find anything.

According to the spokesperson, the department is looking not only at dengue, but is also testing for other potential diseases.

Results from laboratory testing are expected to be completed next week.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

For the first time since 2011, health officials are investigating cases of locally-acquired dengue fever in the islands.

Two cases have been confirmed; four other cases were described as probable.

The six people were residents and visitors who apparently got dengue fever while on the Big Island.

Dr. Melissa Viray, state Department of Health deputy epidemiologist, said investigators are looking into "different cases on the Big Island and we're looking at their different exposures, and we're trying to see where their exposures might have been in common."

The two new cases bring the total number of confirmed cases of dengue fever in Hawaii to 15 so far this year, all but two of which were people who contracted the illness outside of the islands.

There were 14 cases in 2014, and 10 in 2013.

10 Confirmed Cases Of Dengue Fever On Hawaii Island

HAWAII ISLAND ? The Hawaii Department of Health has confirmed 10 cases of ?locally-acquired? dengue fever on Hawaii Island, and now says that one of the vector hotspots for infected mosquitoes is in South Kona, in the Ho?okena / Honaunau area. Health officials caution there are potentially more hotspots ? and cases of infection ? yet to be identified.

Dr. Park stressed that residents should not focus too much on South Kona as a problem area, because they are dealing with a possible cross-island situation. Additional hotspots may be identified.

Dr. Park says the health department plans to create a specific page on the DOH website to serve as a repository for the latest information, including updated numbers of confirmed cases. Park says they do not expect to maintain a ?probable case? count from this point forward, because diagnoses and conformation should be faster now that the island is on the look-out for dengue fever.

An 11th case of locally-acquired dengue fever has been confirmed on Hawaii Island.

Those who fell ill over the last several weeks were residents and visitors, the Health Department said.

The Health Department is focusing its vector control efforts on areas of Kona. However, cases have been found elsewhere on the island.

Officials said no other islands have reported cases.

The 11 cases bring the total number of confirmed cases of dengue fever in Hawaii to 24 so far this year, but the previous 13 cases were not locally-acquired.

Dengue Fever Count Rises to 15

As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, a total of 15 “locally-acquired” cases of dengue fever have been reported on the Big Island, according to reports from the State of Hawai’i Department of Health.

The Wednesday case count rose by four since Tuesday afternoon.

Hawai’i County Civil Defense reports that Hookena Beach Park has been closed until further notice as the site is one identified by the DOH earlier this week that is linked to some of the dengue cases.

Darryl Oliveira, Civil Defense Administrator, said in a radio message that, “As a proactive and preventative measure, Ho’okena Beach Park will be closed until further notice. This action is necessary to allow for health and Parks Department staff to conduct mosquito control and pesticide treatments.”

Of the 19 cases, 17 are adults and two are pediatric cases. All have either recovered or are recovering.

The onset of illness has ranged between 9/15/15 – 10/27/15.

Will dengue become endemic in Hawaii?

Dengue fever is endemic, or permanently established in the human population, in a number of tropical places around the world, including Puerto Rico and popular tourism spots in Latin America and Southeast Asia, according to the CDC.
However, the virus is unlikely to become endemic in Hawaii, said Jonathan Day, a professor of medical entomology at the University of Florida.

Dengue is different from other mosquito-transmitted viruses that have become endemic in recent years in parts of the U.S., he said. For instance, West Nile virus is carried by birds, and mosquitoes can spread the disease from birds to people because they bite both. But dengue doesn't have such an animal "reservoir," except for monkeys in Africa and Southeast Asia, the CDC said. Therefore, the virus is unlikely to persist in the mosquito population for long, once the human outbreak ends.

Other dengue outbreaks in the United States have typically lasted a year or two. In an outbreak in Brownsville, Texas, 25 people became ill with dengue in 2005, and in Key West, Florida, 90 people got dengue from 2009 to 2011, according to the CDC. [7 Devastating Infectious Diseases]

These outbreaks usually end with the help of public education campaigns and mosquito control measures. People in these areas also typically have air conditioning in their homes, which removes the humidity mosquitoes need in order to live, Day said.

Dengue: Another Confirmed Case Brings Total to 34

One new confirmed case of dengue fever on the Big Island was announced by the Hawai?i Department of Health Thursday.

The total of confirmed cases of dengue has risen to 34 since Oct. 26, when two cases were initially being investigated by DOH.

Twenty-six of the confirmed cases are Hawai?i residents, while the other eight are visitors to the islands. Four children have been impacted by dengue. The DOH defines children as individuals under the age of 18.

Onset of illness ranges between Sept. 11 and Nov. 2.

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

State health officials said Thursday the dengue fever outbreak could last for months, and renewed their call for residents to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

"We're at the beginning of a marathon," said Dr. Sarah Park, state epidemiologist, at a news conference. "These outbreaks tend to go for months."

Officials said there are 79 confirmed cases of dengue fever; that's up from 72 confirmed Wednesday. Some 68 of the cases are Hawaii Island residents, and 20 are children.

Meanwhile Thursday, the governor and state Health Department officials said the Hawaii National Guard is assisting with outbreak control efforts...
