HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was scheduled to arrive in Hawaii on Monday night to help with the response to the dengue fever outbreak on the Big Island.

Lyle Petersen, director of the Division of Vector-Borne Diseases, will evaluate state and county efforts.

Virginia Pressler, director of the state Department of Health, said the in-person assessment will help the state determine if additional measures are needed to stem the dengue fever outbreak.

"We are following best practices, to our knowledge, and with their guidance that we have been all along," she added.

The CDC is also sending an entomologist and an assistant.

Hawaii dengue fever outbreak could last for months

(CNN) Since September, there have been 130 confirmed cases of dengue fever on Hawaii's Big Island, the Hawaii Department of Health said Thursday.

This is eight more cases than the number reported on Wednesday. Dr. Virginia Pressler, director of the Hawaii Department of Health, said there has been a "slow trickle" of new cases every day.

"The community needs to understand that we expect to see new cases identified on a daily basis," Pressler said during a news conference Thursday.

This is the first locally transmitted outbreak of the viral illness on the Big Island and the first outbreak in the state since five people were infected on the island of Oahu in 2011. However, this outbreak is being likened to the last widespread outbreak, which was on Maui in 2001. It lasted for 10 months and more than 1,600 people became ill.

"This could go on for a number of months to come," said Dr. Lyle Petersen, director of vector-borne diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He said it's not possible to predict how many cases will occur.

The number of confirmed cases of dengue fever on the Big Island rose to 139, the Department of Health said Monday.

Of the confirmed cases, 122 are Big Island residents and 17 are visitors. Thirty-one of the cases have been children younger than 18. The last onset of illness occurred Nov. 30.

As of Monday, 424 potential cases have been excluded based on test results and/or not meeting case criteria, officials said...

HAWAII ISLAND ? As the number of cases of locally-acquired dengue fever on the Big Island of Hawaii rises to 160, the Hawaii Department of Health is changing its approach to reporting the numbers.

Officials are now clarifying which cases are potentially infectious, and which ? the vast majority ? are no longer contagious. Infectious cases could spread the sickness if they are bitten by mosquitoes, which could in turn spread dengue to another person.

For example, today the state says of the 160 cases reported since September, there are 5 cases that are potentially infectious, while the remaining 155 are no longer contagious...

As of 1 p.m. today (Dec 31) the Department of Health reported an additional 5 confirmed cases since yesterday bringing the total number of confirmed cases since the beginning of the outbreak to 195. These cases include 176 residents and 19 visitors.

Dengue Fever is a virus that is transmitted from an infected person to a mosquito, which can then infect another person. Dengue fever cannot be spread directly from person to person. Of the 190 confirmed cases, 4 are recent and could be in the stage of their illness in which they can infect mosquitoes...
