Corporation, health officials spar over chikungunya

KOCHI: State health officials demanded police protection after civic health committee chairman allegedly issued threats against their visit to Cherlai to verify suspected cases of chikungunya on Friday.
With chikungunya cases reported from Cherlai, the second division of Kochi corporation, represented by Kochi corporation's health standing committee chairman T K Ashraf, health officials focused their activities in the area. Around 35 suspected cases of chikungunya have been reported from the area.

Of the 35 suspected cases of chikungunya, eight have already been confirmed. Officials said that this points to chances of the disease spreading in the area. "We held a special meeting to tackle the issue on Friday. We will be starting fogging from Saturday," said Dr Haseena Mohammed, district medical officer (DMO), Ernakulam.
