Mystery fever grips village in Manachanallur

TRICHY: Most residents of Koundampatti village in Manachanallur taluk are visiting hospitals near and far after the outbreak of a strange fever. More than 150 families in the entire village show symptoms of an illness which doctors' say is most likely chikungunya.

Rajamanickam S, a 35-year-old farmer, has been ill for the last one week. "It all started with headache and gradually developed into body ache and continuous vomiting. Though, I visited few government doctors they are yet to find out the reason," he said.

Doctors, who initially treated the villagers at a primary health centre located at Moovanur, 8 km from the village, said 51 people were diagnosed for the same symptoms. However, they are yet to conclude the disease as chikungunya itself.

Corporation, health officials spar over chikungunya

KOCHI: State health officials demanded police protection after civic health committee chairman allegedly issued threats against their visit to Cherlai to verify suspected cases of chikungunya on Friday.

With chikungunya cases reported from Cherlai, the second division of Kochi corporation, represented by Kochi corporation's health standing committee chairman T K Ashraf, health officials focused their activities in the area. Around 35 suspected cases of chikungunya have been reported from the area.

Of the 35 suspected cases of chikungunya, eight have already been confirmed. Officials said that this points to chances of the disease spreading in the area. "We held a special meeting to tackle the issue on Friday. We will be starting fogging from Saturday," said Dr Haseena Mohammed, district medical officer (DMO), Ernakulam.

Chikungunya death rings alarm bells in health department

The death of a 75-year-old patient after contacting Chikungunya has sent alarm bells ringing in the district health department with it sending a communication to the state government. It was the first case of the disease in the district and second in the state recorded in data with the health department.
The department has also got slides of around 100 homes surrounding the residence of the deceased Darshan Lal of the Tehsilpura area.
The district health authorities stated that no death due to chikungunya had ever been reported from the district which is the main cause of concern. ?Most probably, this is the first case of a death due to the disease as there have been no such reports,? said district epidemiologist Dr Des Raj.

*Take a look at the post immediately above this one. In the past 7 years, only 151 of India's 217,729 cases of Chikungunya have been reported from Uttar Pradesh & Bihar. One would hope that a district epidemiologist would have a better grasp of the facts when it came to commenting on his field of expertise. Or that an enterprising journalist would perform some easy fact-checking. Either way, a reported fatality related to Chickungunya in India is a rare occurrence. A confirmed fatal case in Punjab could be indicative that there are many other undiagnosed non-fatal cases in the population suggesting that Chickungunya may now be spreading to that state. - Ro
 
Health Dept to look into death of 75-yr-old chikungunya patient

A review of death of the 75-year-old chikungunya patient, who had died three days ago, would be conducted by the district health authorities.
District epidemiologist Des Raj said a committee of the department would be going through facts of the case to ascertain the cause of death.
Meanwhile, he appealed to local doctors and hospitals to bring any suspected chikungunya patient to the notice of the health department immediately.
