Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have once again been clamped in the city in view of the rise in epidemic cases. The orders, issued by the District Collector will be in place for the next two months.
Collector K N Satheesh said that the prohibitory orders were declared in view of the dengue cases that have been on the rise and due to the threat of a hantavirus that was detected in a patient in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.
While hantaviruses are known to cause fatal diseases in humans, people may be infected with hantaviruses through urine, saliva or contact with rodent waste products.

29 new dengue cases, highest in a day so far

Dengue is spreading its tentacles fast and wide in the capital with 29 fresh cases being reported on Saturday, the highest so far for a day this season. However, no deaths were reported. With this, the total number of cases has risen to 169 from Friday?s 140.
A nine-year-old girl had died due to dengue late last month.
All the 12 zones, except Najafgarh, in the jurisdiction of South, North and East Delhi Municipalities recorded dengue cases, a statement issued by the civic bodies said.

A 35-year- old man at Chhindwara town died while undergoing treatment for dengue on Saturday. This is the first dengue death this year in the state. Meanwhile, a fresh case of dengue has been diagnosed in the city on Saturday. However, the patient is a resident of Baora and is admitted at LBS Hospital.

Dengue on the rise, say doctors

Health officials told to step up surveillance, even as BBMP is in denial mode
Bangalore has been in the grip of dengue over the last two months. Although doctors are seeing an increase in the number of positive cases, health officials from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) continued to be in denial mode.

Positive cases in the city have increased from 373 on July 27 to 599 on October 5. Although health officials confirmed at a high-level meeting convened by the Health and Family Welfare Minister Aravind Limbavalli on Friday that eight of the 21 dengue deaths are from Bangalore, BBMP officials said only four dengue deaths had been reported since January.

This is apart from several deaths reported by private hospitals.

PUNE: There is no respite from spurt in dengue case even this month.

The city reported 21 confirmed cases of dengue within a span of four days between October 1 and October 4. As many as 137 dengue cases were reported last month.

While the sudden spells of showers after a lull in the monsoon provided some relief from the sultry conditions, this also led to a spurt in mosquito-borne infections like dengue fever, say doctors.

Two school students die of suspected dengue

80 cases reported in just eight days this month
Two students from Sophia High School died of suspected dengue in a private hospital on Monday.

According to sources, the students, studying in class III and IV, were residents of Sanjaynagar and Sultanpet, respectively. The BBMP is yet to confirm whether the deaths were due to dengue. Samples have been sent to National Institute of Virology for further confirmation.

According to Palike reports, with just eight days into October, as many as 80 cases have tested positive for dengue while two cases of chikungunya too have been reported.
Statistics reveal 677 cases of dengue positive cases and 21 chikungunya positive cases since January 2012.

As far as State figures are concerned, 2,018 persons have tested positive for dengue with 21 succumbing to the infection, including four in the City.

Karnataka on special drive to contain dengue

Following an increase in the number of cases across the state, the Karnataka government launched a special drive to check dengue fever, Health Minister Aravinda Limbavali said on Monday.
?I have directed the officials and doctors to contain the dreadful fever, as the number of cases has gone up to 2,430 this year, with 21 deaths reported. Bangalore has accounted for 28 percent of the cases so far,? Limbavali told reporters here after a meeting of officials.
The health department will enlist the support of private doctors to diagnose dengue cases and set up blood test centres to conduct Mac Elisa exams for diagnosis in identified high-risk areas.

Fever ward opened at General Hospital

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fever cases in the district are on the rise in such a pace that an exclusive fever ward has been opened in the General Hospital. Of the 1,500 odd patients reported at the OP of the hospital for the past two days, over 800 patients have been detected with fever. Majority of them are having dengue.

With the alarming rise of fever cases the district health administration will be forced to open similar fever wards in all the district and taluk hospitals. "There was a considerable surge in dengue cases in the past one week with over 200 positive cases being reported," said a district health administration official.

This year alone 2,000 dengue fever cases were reported from the district, which is second only to West Bengal in the total number of dengue cases reported across the country.

Bhopal: With dengue spreading its wings in Madhya Pradesh, three more persons have been diagnosed with the disease, health officials said.

District Malaria Officer, Dr Padmakar Tripathi told reporters yesterday that all the three patients were brought to the city from Hoshangabad, Bina and Vidisha in a critical condition two days back and are undergoing treatment at a private hospital here.

A sharp increase in dengue infections has jolted the Central Government into action.The number of victims has more than tripled in the past week itself, leading the Government to hold a meeting regarding the issue on Monday.

The meeting was held at Nirman Bhawan and was chaired by the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad. Also present were the Health Ministers of Haryana and Delhi, the Mayors of civic bodies, their deputy commissioners along with senior officers of the Health Department of the Delhi Government. In the meeting, the officers were asked to intensify sanitation drive starting October 11.

As the number of dengue and other vector-borne cases soars correspondingly the gap between the figures brought out by the administration and private hospitals widens. According to the public health department, the dengue count has touched 111, while malaria has reached 591 - crossing the last year's figure of 526.
Private hospitals, on the other hand, have reported four dengue deaths this season, a figure that is denied by the health department officials. Besides, the dengue count given by private hospitals has crossed 170.

"On an average, we admit about 15 dengue patients a day," said Dr Vishal Sehgal, head of emergency and in patient services at Artemis Health Care. The hospital has registered 131 patients till now.

More than 20 people have died of the fever in Karnataka and eight of them were from Bangalore alone. But the government still maintains things are under control.

BANGALORE: The health ministry of Karnataka has reacted strongly to rising incidences of dengue in Bangalore. Principal secretary, health and family welfare department, M Madan Gopal on Tuesday directed the BBMP to impose a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the builder, who is constructing a site adjacent to the Sophia High School in the city.

The ongoing construction near the school and the alleged unhygienic conditions prevailing inside the school premises are being blamed for mosquito breeding, which has lead to dengue and resulted in death of 3 students of Sophia school this year. Karnataka has registered 21 deaths due to dengue this year. Bangalore has 'officially' lost four people to dengue but unofficial deaths due to suspected dengue fever is said to be more than 20 in the city this year.

Not enough staff in North Corpn to handle vector-borne diseases

Even as cases of dengue and malaria are rising in the city, lack of preparations to curb the vector-borne diseases by civic agencies are evident from the fact that a majority of posts in the malaria department of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation are vacant.

While all the posts of entomologists and assistant malaria officer (AMO) with the civic body are vacant, a majority of seats for other posts have also not been filled.
The North Corporation has six posts of entomologists and AMO and all of them are vacant. Similarly, 61 of 96 posts of senior malaria inspector and 244 of 360 posts of malaria inspector are lying vacant.

According to corporation officials, 209 cases of malaria have been reported in the city till October 6, and with 70 cases the North Corporation leads the three corporations in the number of malaria cases.

Similarly, the number of dengue cases to date stands at 259 — including 30 cases reported on Tuesday. Of the three corporations, the maximum number of dengue cases (109) have been reported from areas that come under the North Corporation.

The Government Rajaji Hospital here is on alert to tackle dengue fever cases being reported from various parts of the district. On Wednesday, a special dengue ward was opened where 13 persons, including a couple of children, are undergoing treatment.

According to reliable sources, a baby belonging to Sellur area in the city, died of dengue.

?The baby died on Wednesday at 2 a.m. The test results given by the Institute of Virology of Madurai Medical College in the afternoon revealed that the baby had dengue. Our hospital is geared up to meet the dengue challenge,? a senior doctor in the GRH said.

Neglect has resulted in the outbreak of a ?mysterious fever? suspected to be dengue in Ulaganathapuram Adi Dravidar Colony at Aatukulam village coming under Melur taluk.

The Dalit habitation has been almost neglected by the local administration as the villagers complained that the overhead water tank meant for drinking was cleaned after almost a year and six months.

A suspected dengue outbreak has forced all members of the colony, most of whom are daily wagers, stay at home under medication. At least 150 of them are affected by the mysterious fever and found waiting in a queue to get checked and receive their dose of pills.

A day after the government ordered the BBMP to levy a fine of `5 lakh on the owner of an under-construction building on the charges that its negligence led to breeding of mosquitoes, and dengue deaths, it came to light that dengue was not behind the deaths in question.

The government had on Monday held New Consolidated Construction Company, which is working on a building near Sophia High School, responsible for what it thought was dengue deaths. However, Mac Elisa test, which is conclusive in proving dengue, established on Tuesday that it was not because of dengue that the students of Sophia High School died.

35 fresh dengue cases reported

Thirty-five fresh cases of dengue, the highest for a single day this season, were reported in the capital on Wednesday, taking the total number of those hit by the virus to 298.
Of the 35 new cases, two cases were reported from NDMC areas in the capital while the others were reported from south, north and east Delhi municipality areas.
Except Narela and Sadar Paharganj, all the other zones in the city reported fresh cases on Wednesday, according to figures from all three MCDs.
Out of the 298 cases, four cases have been reported from outside Delhi. A nine-year-old girl died due to dengue in September.

Out of these confirmed cases, six belong to Ludhianadistrict while three others have been brought to different hospitals from other places in Punjab.

So far, hospitals reported cases after confirmatory tests; weekly fogging operations to begin

Representatives of 452 hospitals and laboratories from the 15 zones participated in an emergency meeting organised by the Chennai Corporation on Thursday.

The total number of persons admitted with symptoms of dengue since October 1 is 21. Hospitals have reported eight cases of dengue in the last two days.

The civic body has put in place a system whereby all the 596 registered hospitals and 36 diagnostic laboratories in the city are required to provide details of the patients on a daily basis to the Chennai Corporation. The meeting on Thursday was headed by the zonal-level assistant health officers in each of the zones.

Odisha: Dengue cases on rise, 80 more detected in

At least 10% of doctors and nursing staff at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are down with dengue. Even the three units at the medicine wards have at least 15 AIIMS employees admitted with dengue-related bleeding. ?The admitted patients are those with internal bleeding and whose platelet count have slumped to less than 30,000. They are critical,? said a doctor, managing one of the medicine department unit. In the past month, over 30 employees have been admitted due to dengue.
?At least twice this number ? especially, AIIMS employees living in the campus ? come to the outpatient department daily with dengue-like symptoms,? said the doctor.

New Delhi, Oct 11 (PTI) Concerned at the fast spread of dengue in the country, the Union Health Ministry will chalk out a plan with the most-affected southern states tomorrow to deal with the menace which has so far stricken 21,000 people and claimed 120 lives. Top Health Ministry officials, including the Union Health Secretary P K Pradhan will review the situation in Chennai tomorrow in the dengue-hit states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Puducherry to work out plans to tackle its spread. Tamil Nadu has so far reported the maximum of 5,546 cases and 40 deaths in the country. The five affected southern states have reported a total of 12,000 cases so far with 77 deaths, as against less than 3,000 cases and 33 deaths reported last year. The Real Dengue Hotspot Isn?t Delhi

There?s a lot of news aroundof a higher-than-normal outbreak of dengue in New Delhi. But signs are that it?s the south of the country where the spread of dengue is more worrisome.

Health experts say there?s no evidence so far the incidence of the disease this season is above average in the capital. Every year the media makes too much of the uptick in cases of dengue in October, said N.K. Yadav, a health officer with the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Most cases in a year happen in October as that?s just after the monsoon rains during which the mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus proliferate. ?This is nothing unusual,? Mr. Yadav said.

MUZAFFARPUR: One of the senior most physicians of the town and a kala-azar expert, Dr T K Jha claimed on Thursday he had detected three cases of dengue at his Bramhapura clinic. One of them from Daudpur Police Lines area was in a serious condition.

Dr Jha said a patient having dengue belonged to Bramhapura area while the third patient had come from New Delhi who returned to New Delhi after recovery.

Review Meeting of Five Southern States on Dengue Situation held

Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad took a review meeting on Dengue situation in five Southern states at Chennai today.

In his opening remarks, Shri Azad said a total of 2859 dengue cases were reported from five Southern states till September last year. There has been a four-fold increase totalling about 12,500 during the corresponding period this year. Similarly, 33 deaths due to dengue were reported in these states last year during January to September as against 77 deaths during the corresponding period this year.

In his closing remarks, Shri Azad said source reduction is the main strategy for dengue prevention and control. It is imperative that all municipal corporations, other urban local bodies and Panchayati Raj institutions take the following steps immediately:

1. notify and enforce provisions against mosquito-genic conditions in their respective jurisdiction.

2. carry out a special campaign for sanitation and cleanliness by involving all stakeholders.

3. arrange for spraying the identified sites of mosquito and breeding with larvicides.

4. carry out fogging to kill and control adult mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya.

5. sentinel surveillance sites may be increased depending on the local needs so that better surveillance and diagnostic facilities may be provided in more areas.

6. to reduce case fatality and improve case management of dengue cases, training of the doctors and nurses should be organized not only in public sector but also in private sector.

7. information about the diagnostic facilities, case management and vector control may be widely publicised through print media and other means of mass communication.

Shri Azad said that the Government of India will provide more flexibility to State Governments for effective interventions against vector-borne diseases including dengue within the overall framework of NRHM. There will be no shortage of funds for recruitment of trained manpower on contract basis, providing equipment and kits at sentinel and diagnostic centres. The Swasth Bharat programme (Arogaya Bharatam) on regional DD channels sponsored by the Ministry of Health & FW, Government of India should be utilised by State Governments for providing information to the people about the measures being taken by the Government for dengue prevention and control, and facilities for diagnosis and case management, he added.

Health Ministers and Principal Secretaries and other senior officials of Health Department of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry attended the review Meeting.

Public health officials in the city have been alerted of the deaths

Two persons in the Chennai Metropolitan Area died of fever due to unknown origins, but suspected to be dengue, on Friday, and public health officials in the city have been alerted.

The first death was reported at the Government Royapettah Hospital around 2.30 a.m.. Samji Solomon Raja, a 26-year-old resident of Ice House police quarters at Triplicane, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. He was an executive with a textile showroom on Luz Church Road.

The Capital has already clocked nearly 400 dengue cases this season -- with 30 new cases being reported on Saturday alone -- and government agencies confirm that the dengue season is only halfway through. The day-biting Aedes mosquitoe has forced the civic bodies to work even on Sundays, and with an average of 20 new cases being reported every day this past week the mosquitoes clearly seem to be winning. For its part, the Delhi Government maintains that there has been only one dengue death this season.

Though the patient shifted to a private hospital, lack of resources for further treatment in a multi-specialty hospital prompted her to get readmitted to the GH.

With the rising number of dengue and malaria cases, most hospitals in Noida and Ghaziabad are finding it difficult to accommodate patients. Beds in most of the hospitals are occupied. As a result, many are compelled to check hospitals in Delhi. "All the hospitals in Ghaziabad are full.


Not a single bed is available. We are going to a private hospital in Delhi," said Vikram Singh, a resident of Indirapuram.
In Ghaziabad, the district health department has sent 102 samples for confirmation, of which, three have tested positive. However, no death has been reported.

Yashoda Hospital at Nehru Nagar in Ghaziabad has 306 beds and all of them are occupied, mostly by patients suffering from mosquito-borne diseases. The hospital administration has arranged a few more beds. Patients are now being accommodated in its auditorium.

GURGAON: The numbers of dengue and malaria cases have drastically gone up in the city in the last one month. So far, 147 cases of dengue and 602 cases of malaria have been reported from across the city.

Moreover, amidst the claims of private hospitals of four dengue deaths last month, district health department officials claimed that first dengue death was confirmed only on last Friday (October 12). A health official informed that victim was a resident of Sector 40. Given the rising trend, it is expected that dengue cases will surpass the last year's total with in a week's time. Last year, a total of 156 dengue cases and three deaths were reported from the city.

Delhi Dengue Update: 30 new cases on Monday

30 new cases were reported in the capital on Monday taking the total number to 455 so far this year. 224 cases were reported last week.
Till October 6, there were only 169 confirmed cases, but by October 13 Delhi had 393 patients of dengue. Apart from 2008 and 2010, which were the years of dengue epidemics, it is the highest in the past five years. State health minister A K Walia directed all government and private hospitals and blood banks to produce platelets and allied products round-the-clock.

COIMBATORE: A 73-year-old man from Kerala undergoing H1N1 treatment at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital here was declared dead at the hospital early Monday morning. He was a resident of Palakkad district in Kerala and was referred to the government hospital from a private hospital in the city where he tested positive earlier. The district health authorities have cross notified the information about the death to their counterparts in Kerala to initiate swine flu control measures in Palakkad district.

This is the third H1N1 death reported here in Coimbatore, after a 75-year-old man from Kavundampalayam in Tirupur district died in April and a 26-year-old woman from Nilgiris in July 2012.

Corporation loses count of infections

A seven-year-old girl from Kancheepuram reportedly died of dengue at Institute of Child Health in Egmore early Monday morning. However, hospital and corporation officials refuse to confirm or comment on whether dengue was the cause of death.

The family of Bowshiya said doctors had indicated that the girl had dengue. "The medical report stated dengue as the cause of death," said the girl's father, Jailabuddin. While Bowshiya was from outside the city, the corporation's refusal to comment on whether she had dengue was the latest instance of the civic body being in denial about the disease and underreporting cases.

Chandigarh With dengue fever bordering on an outbreak situation in various pockets of the city, the UT health authorities have been caught napping for not having taken adequate preventive measures before the onset of the dengue season.
At present, there are a total of 196 cases of dengue in the city, out of which 129 patients are from the city and its periphery as per the figures revealed by UT vector-borne diseases wing. Besides, there are approximately 150 cases of dengue fever which are admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. A suspected dengue death also occurred at GMCH-32, wherein a 9-year-old boy, Salman Khan, died at the hospital. But the officials did not confirm it as a dengue death.

A city college was put on high alert after a hostel student came down with dengue fever.

Following reports of dengue fever in a group of students of D.G. Vaishnav College, health secretary J. Radhakrishnan and the Corporation commissioner visited the college on Tuesday. A team of malaria workers carried out mosquito control measures including fogging on the premises.

According to principal of the college, S. Narasimhan, around 150 students were screened after a hostel resident reported dengue fever. After the Kancheepuram youth returned home, the other students were screened by a laboratory run by Lions Club on the college premises.

Sachin Parbhakar, 25, of Pathka Mohalla is getting treatment at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana. Sohan Lal, 32, of Kangna village was also found suffering from dengue and was under treatment at a private hospital in Nawanshahr.
District health officer Dr Garja Singh said besides these two patients, who tested positive for dengue, another person was found suffering from dengue, whose identity has not been confirmed as yet.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation today claimed that dengue disease is under control in the city, after it showed a rising trend.

"Since the monsoon has gone, the cases of dengue are coming down in comparison to what it was earlier," additional municipal commissioner (health) Manisha Mhaiskar told reporters.

She said one needs to prevent breeding of Aides Aegypti mosquito, which normally feeds during the daytime.

After 18 dengue deaths, Maharashtra government steps up preventive measures

Mumbai: With 18 people succumbing to dengue in Maharashtra this year including three from the metropolis, the state government has issued directives to authorities to take preventive measures to stop its spread.

According to officials in the health department, 762 persons tested positive from January to September 2012 for the disease.

As many as 139 localities especially in urban and semi- urban areas were affected. There were 7,608 suspected cases and 6,195 serum samples were examined.

Citizens blame Chandigarh Health department officials for rising number of dengue cases. The number of dengue cases have risen exponentially this year, and it seems that the UT(union territory) health department is pulling at straws to find where they are going wrong.
According to statistical data the number of dengue cases in the city is 145, whereas according to other health sources, there are about 350 cases of dengue, dengue-like-fever and viral fever. These cases are not recorded in the official total, thereby leading the authorities to believe that the ravaging disease is under control.

Delhi registered the highest number of dengue cases on Wednesday this season with 34 people being detected infected with it, taking the total number of such cases past the 500-mark.
Most of the 12 zones that come under three Municipal Corporations reported dengue cases on Wednesday with the maximum being reported from shah (north) and shah (south zones).
While 31 fresh cases on Wednesday were reported from three Municipal Corporations areas, two were reported from New Delhi Municipal Corporation area and one from the Delhi cantonment area.
According to the data available, 513 cases of dengue have been detected here since the outbreak of the disease early this month.

Tamil Nadu:
Health officials asked to submit daily report on incidence of fever

The Hindu Pankaj Kumar Bansal, project director, Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, along with Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, explaining precautionary measures for dengue to a resident at Beema Nagar in the city on Wednesday.

Health officials and workers of the Tiruchi Corporation and other local bodies in the district have been instructed to submit daily reports on incidence of fever and also the preventive measures taken to check spread of dengue in their respective jurisdictional areas.

A directive to this effect was issued by Pankaj Kumar Bansal, project director, Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, who is also the designated monitoring officer for the district to monitor the preventive measures against dengue. He directed officials of the local bodies to go on a street-by-street visit to review the sanitary and health situation on a daily basis.

35 dengue cases reported from Sultanganj block

BHAGALPUR: Alarmed by the ever increasing number of dengue patients in areas under Sultanganj block of Bhagalpur apart, the district health authorities have sent a medical team to make a survey and do mapping of the area besides providing emergency treatment to patients.

Pathological tests and treatment of 35 patients, as per official records, have been done at the government-run hospitals. According to sources, nearly 70 patients suffering from dengue-like symptoms have been reported from Sultanganj block areas.

Gorakhpur: with encephalitis in Purvanchal - with dengue is also wreaking havoc. Two of these patients, while the rest of the surrounding districts are Gorakhpur city. Guru Gorakhnath still fifteen patients are being treated in hospital.

NAGPUR: Monsoon may be on its way out, but dengue continues to bite hard, especially the children. Doctors expressed concern over the number of patients coming up everyday with this viral infection. Collector Saurabh Rao and his wife Priyanka were also diagnosed with the disease recently and had to be hospitalized for over a week each. Their platelet count had fallen to as low as 60,000 (normal being 1.5 lakh) and they would have required blood transfusion if it had fallen to 50,000. Fortunately, they did not and recovered well. Rao said fogging and identification of mosquito breeding sites have been started in the city as well as the rural areas of the district.
