22-yr-old youth first dengue victim in Delhi this season

Last Updated: Thursday, September 05, 2013, 22:39
New Delhi: In the first case of death caused by dengue in the national capital this year, a 22-year-old youth succumbed to the vector-borne disease at a private hospital here.

The deceased, a resident of Azadpur in North Delhi and a contractual employee working under North Delhi corporation as a Domestic Breeder Checker, died on September 1 at Max Super Speciality Hospital at Shailmar Bagh here, the hospital authorities said.

Confirming the death, hospital officials said in a statement, "The patient came to us from Tyagi hospital with detected dengue. It was also confirmed with the test done at the hospital that the patient was a confirmed case of dengue."

However, MCD officials maintained that dengue death tally was "zero".

SDMC Municipal Health Officer N K Yadav said, "Our tally still stands at zero. The deceased was diagnosed through rapid kit test and not ELISA test and, therefore, it is only a suspected Dengue death and not an official figure for us."

Fogger dies of dengue during routine site check in Delhi
MAIL TODAY BUREAU | MAIL TODAY | NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013 | UPDATED 09:07 IST

A North Delhi Municipal Corporation employee, deployed for checking mosquito breeding in the area, has died of dengue in the first death caused by the vectorborne disease this year.

Tarun (26), the domestic breeding checker (DBC) who died on Sunday, was apparently bitten by the aedes aegypti mosquito, the dengue carrier, during his routine checks and awareness programmes, official sources said.

A local doctor had referred Tarun to a tertiary care hospital after he showed symptoms of dengue on August 28. He was later admitted to Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh where he died on Sunday afternoon. The hospital authorities said they had sent the report to the Corporation on Monday. Though the civic body refused to confirm the cause of his death, the incident reflects authorities' failure to deal with the dengue menace that grips the city almost every year.

A suspected dengue death bares city's unpreparedness (Mumbai, Maharashtra)
Sumitra Deb Roy, TNN | Sep 7, 2013, 01.03 AM IST

A 41-year-old man from Malwani died of suspected dengue on Friday, adding to concerns created by two consecutive dengue deaths in Goregaon this week. The latest death has highlighted how doctors and hospitals are clearly unprepared to tackle the dengue threat in the city.

Devendra Singh's family said he was shunted from three hospitals. The family spent over Rs 65,000 on Singh's treatment, but does not have a clear answer to what killed him. Doctors at Malad's Riddhi Vinayak Hospital, where he was treated last, claimed his dengue report was "equivocal". "He did have classic dengue symptoms. When he came to our hospital, his platelet count was 18,000 (the normal range is 1.5-4 lakh per l)," said intensivist Dr Vinay Goyal. The hospital has stated Singh's cause of death as septicemia shock, multi-organ failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome. The hospital said it did not get time to run confirmatory dengue tests on the patient.

The state government may have dismissed presence of dengue, the total number of cases went up to 212 here on Saturday, 69 reported from Lucknow. The bigger cause of concern, however, is that 22 cases belong to dengue-type 2 category.

Microbiologists at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), who have isolated these cases, said dengue-type 2 is caused by a different virus associated with more lethal manifestations of the ailment such as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome.
