PUNE: The spread of dengue infection was at its peak in Pune in the months of September and October with the National Institute of Virology (NIV) recording the highest number of positive cases this year in these two months.

Of the 1,920 samples of suspected dengue cases NIV received in September and October, mainly from Pune and adjoining districts, 1,250 were found infected with dengue virus, accounting for a 65% of the total samples received - the highest registered in the last 10 months. In fact, NIV had recorded only 495 positive dengue cases in the first eight months of the year, but the figure jumped to 1,745 in the last two months.

MUMBAI: When civic corporators criticized BMC on Wednesday for not making public the exact number of dengue cases in the city, they were only voicing an old complaint. Four months ago, Praja Foundation had collated information from death certificates to state that 108 people had died due to dengue in 2013-14.

"We had sought the information from BMC using an RTI application to come up with the figure," said Milind Mhaske from Praja.

The Praja data showed that 7,260 people had suffered from the mosquito-borne disease in 2013-14.

Kurla resident Saira Sheikh (47) died of dengue and not because of the adverse reaction to Caftriaxone and Cefotaxime injections, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stated in an affidavit filed at the Bombay High Court.

Sheikh, a mother of two, was among 45 other women who fell severely ill after being administered the injections at the Bhabha hospital in Kurla (W) in August. In the affidavit, BMC officials said a polymerase chair reaction (PCR) test revealed that Sheikh was suffering from dengue. "After verifying all medical reports, it was revealed that Sheikh died of dengue and not due to reaction to any drug," the affidavit stated.

As the 35-year-old Vijay Bhosale succumbed to dengue in Bandra, on Wednesday, a minor girl hailing from Uttar Pradesh died in KEM hospital on Tuesday after suffering from dengue haemorrhagic fever.

A team of BMC officials collected reports of Khushboonissa Ansari (31), who passed away on October 31 in Ghatkopar?s Ashirwad Heart hospital. The reports were collected to update the dengue statistics. The statistics given by the BMC health officials have not been updated does not include these deaths. While the doctors at Ashirwad nursing home informed that Ansaris death reports were given to BMC officials, Dr Mangala Gomare, deputy executive health officer at BMC, said that they were not aware of Ansari?s death. Mumbai: The deadly dengue sweep across the city continues, with a 35-year-old Khar resident and a 14-year-old girl succumbing to its complications in the last 48 hours. A death that occurred 19 days back too came to light, taking Mumbai's toll due to the mosquito-borne disease to 15 this year. Of these, eight have died in November alone.

While Vijay Bhosale (35) died at Holy Family Hospital, Bandra, at 4.30pm on Wednesday, BMC's chief epidemiology officer Dr Mangala Gomare said the 14-year-old died in civic-run KEM Hospital, Parel, on Tuesday. "The girl was visiting from UP,'' said Dr Gomare, adding her death would not be counted in Mumbai's toll.

Teen dies of dengue, toll rises to 15

PUNE: A 19-year-old girl from Warje Malwadi died of dengue at a private hospital here, taking the city's dengue death toll to 15 so far this year. The State's Review Committee has so far confirmed eight of these deaths.

A 28-year-old man from Khar-East has become the latest victim of dengue in the city. Though he died on November 16, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed the death only on Friday.

After probe, BMC puts dengue death toll at 12

Following investigations into a series of suspected dengue deaths, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday pegged the death toll across the city at 12 after confirming two more deaths due to dengue in the last one week. So far, 18 people have been reported dead after contracting dengue, a viral infection that spreads through Aedes Aegypti mosquito.
With prolonged heat and delayed winters, as many as 760 confirmed cases of dengue have been reported across the city this year. However, the suspected dengue cases stand at a significant 4,000. While the cases usually witness a downslide in November, this year there has been an unusual spurt in the dengue toll even in November.

The death of school-going Yadnesh Hajare (13) Friday morning in civic-run Bandra Bhabha Hospital may add to the rising dengue death toll, with the boy suspected to have contracted the disease apart from other medical complications. While the cause of death has currently been established as septicemia, father of the deceased, Ravindra Hajare, told Newsline that doctors treating him at Bhabha Hospital also suspected dengue, though the boy died before the test could be conducted.
Yadnesh, a student of St. Elias High School, was taken to the hospital on Thursday night after he started vomiting. ?Our family doctor had diagnosed malaria and my boy required ICU admission. On Friday morning, the hospital staff shifted him out of the ICU saying another patient requires emergency ICU admission. While they promised to shift him back in the ICU after 15 minutes, it took over an hour. By then his platelet count deteriorated and he passed away. A doctor told us that he suspected Yadnesh had contracted dengue,? said a weeping Hajare, who lost his only child.
When contacted, Dr P Jadhav, medical superintendent (MS) of Bhabha hospital, said, ?The boy tested positive for malaria in a private clinic but he tested negative when we conducted the test. A test to diagnose dengue has still not been carried out. But he was not taken out of the ICU.?

Committee of doctors reviewing all 19 dengue deaths found four were due to antibiotics overdose and patients being pumped with platelets before count fell below WHO-approved danger mark of 10,000.

In a shocking revelation, a five-member special committee of doctors appointed by BMC said wrong treatment is leading to deaths of dengue patients, after it found four of the city's 19 dengue fatalities were due to excessive transfusion of platelets resulting in Transfusion Related Acute Lung Injury (TRALI).
