DENGUE RETURNS WITH RAINS IN STATE
Friday, 15 July 2016 | PNS | Dehradun | in Dehradun

With rains the dreaded dengue has returned to haunt the State. In Dehradun 20 cases of the disease have been reported till date. However, the health department is claiming that only one case of dengue has occurred in the district.

This discrepancy has cropped up as the State health department only considers Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) positive cases as actual number of people suffering from the disease and does not consider the results of Rapid test.

The department admits that 20 samples have been found positive in Rapid test this season. The department is also not considering the death of the one patient, a Bhandaribagh resident by the disease as the ELISA test of this patient was not conducted in the authorised labs of the health department.

Just two government hospitals have reported dengue cases equal to the total number of such cases confirmed in the city by the municipal corporation that keeps count of cases and deaths in the city.
The Safdarjung Hospital alone treated 77 cases of dengue from Delhi and the NCR till July 9, whereas the MCD data from Delhi and the NCR confirmed 50 cases till July 16. The MCD says 18 of these are from Delhi.
?A dozen of the 77 dengue cases are from within Delhi and the rest from NCR,? a Safdarjung official said. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital near Connaught Place has confirmed another 6 cases from Delhi, taking the number of confirmed dengue cases between the two hospitals to 18.

KOLKATA: With four deaths in three days, dengue is back with a vengeance in Kolkata and Salt Lake. Close on the heels of the deaths of two schoolchildren on July 31at the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, a 29-year-old Dum Dum resident died at the same hospital on Monday morning. On July 30, another 46-year-old from Dum Dum had succumbed to dengue at Apollo. Three of the four deaths resulted from `macrophage activation syndrome' or a hyperactivity of the immune system that affected the vital organs of the victims, triggering a quick death. The city has rarely seen this deadly a dengue strain, which has a mortality rate of 50%-60%, said experts.

Biboswan had `septic shock with multiorgan failure, with features of haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and haemorrhagic fever'. "Both had internal bleeding after an immune system collapse. The latter is often triggered by EBV virus and can be treated with IVIG and steroids. But the mortality rate is high in such dengue," Banerjee said.
