37 fatalities added today for a total of 956. This is the most in one day that I can remember. The report was released much later than usual.

1 On 30th December 2009, 18570 passengers have been screened at 11 Airports with 40 counters manned by 98 doctors and 69 paramedics. Total passengers screened till date is 10159828.

2. Till date, samples from 112254 persons have been tested for Influenza A H1N1 in Government Laboratories And a few private Laboratories across the country and 25912(23.08%) of them have been found positive.

3. Out of the 133 cases reported during the day one case is having history of foreign travel and rest are indigenous cases.

4. Five deaths (Rajasthan-4 and Maharashtra-1) were reported during the day.

5. Reports of sixteen earlier deaths (UttarPradesh-5, Rajasthan-3, Chandigarh-3 , HimachalPradesh-2,Punjab-2,Haryana-1,)have been received from the health authorities of the respective states and are reflected in the cumulative total.

Collectively, the six states graphed below account for 80% of India's fatalities. Delhi and Maharashtra were affected first. Early August shows a change in Maharashtra's testing policy. Comparing case and fatality graphs, it appears that a patient in Delhi is most likely to be tested while a patient from Gujarat is much less likely.

The August-September outbreak in Andhra Pradesh which gave rise to rumours of mutation was quite small in intensity compared to the initial wave in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The summer wave from AP died out completely, whereas Maharashtra and Karnataka are experiencing smaller winter waves.

Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi are experiencing much larger second waves, with Gujarat running about 4 weeks behind the other two. Confirmed cases are dropping in all of these states except for Gujarat.

In Lieu of an official press release for January 12: 12 new fatalities would bring the official total to 1078.

India's swine flu toll goes up to 1,082

Twelve swine flu deaths, of them eleven in Gujarat alone, were reported Tuesday, taking the total toll in India to 1,082, health authorities said here.

Also, 83 new cases were recorded in the country, taking the number of people affected with the contagious virus to 27,901.


Of the deaths in Gujarat, two deaths were reported Tuesday and the rest had occurred earlier but were only confirmed Tuesday. With these deaths, the toll in the state has gone up to 163.


One death was also reported from Rajasthan.


In the Indian capital, eight new cases were reported Tuesday, taking the total number of infections from the pandemic virus so far to 9,570, nearly 60 percent of whom have been children.


'Of the eight cases, five are children,' Anjana Prakash, Delhi's deputy nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.


With these five children, the city has so far witnessed 5,330 kids being infected with the H1N1 virus.


'Yes, children are the worst sufferers. But fortunately the number of cases is going down and winter may be the reason behind it,' Prakash added.


The deaths in the national capital due to swine flu remained unchanged at 87.


'Till date, samples from 117,943 people have been tested for Influenza A (H1N1) in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 27,901 of them have been found positive,' said a statement issued here.


New cases were also reported from Gujarat (33), Maharashtra (28), Karnataka (15), Rajasthan (11), Madhya Pradesh (4), Chhattisgarh (2) and Punjab (1).
