India: Flood continues to ravage parts of Adilabad district in Andhra Pradesh
A flooded Penganga river continue to ravage parts of Adilabad on Thursday though it started receding during the day. Some five villages in Koutala mandal and two in Sirpur (T) mandal were surrounded by water as local streams could not discharge into the Penganga which flows on the border that this district shares with Maharashtra.

According to local media reports, the river, a tributary of Godavari, came into spate down stream before getting converted into Pranahita, due to release of flood waters from two irrigation projects in the neighbouring district. The road link to the two mandals was cut off at Tonkini as the level of Tatichettu Orre stream rose submerging the bridge.

The flash flood triggered by landsides inundated 10 shops in the Bagi bazaar and washed away 12 bighas of land in Mandah and Baha villages in the Shegli gram panchayat in the Kataula area in Drang last night.

The flash flood struck a second time in 10 days, wreaking havoc downstream in the khad basin. The bazaar and several houses in Mandah and Baha fell in the danger zone as the flood had inundated the entire region, said flood-hit villagers.

Flood situation in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri township critical

Due to lack of proper drainage system, the rain water engulfed a vast tract of area as the adjoining Korola river remained swollen.

The flood situation in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri township remained grim today with almost the entire area submerged under rain water and more than two lakh people affected.

Official sources said here that more than 25 municipal corporation ward areas of the township have been completely submerged as rain water entered almost every household forcing people to take shelter on embankments.

Flood situation in Uttar Pradesh continues to be grim with all the rivers in the state rising to the danger mark threatening the embankments.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the recent floods and rains in the state has now gone up to 149, with three more deaths being reported today. While two deaths were reported from Lakhimpur Kheri, one died in Barabanki, according to sources.

The overall toll in rain-related incidents in the state touched 133 with two deaths being reported on Friday. Both deaths were reported from Thrissur district, disaster management officials said adding that Gopi, 60, from Amballur and Noble, two, from Kolathura died in rain-related incidents.

3 killed in Himachal as rain pours misery

SHIMLA: Heavy rainfall and thundershowers occurred at most places in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and some parts of Punjab on Saturday, causing mercury to fall by a few notches in the region. Heavy rainfall coupled with cloudburst and landslide led to death of three people in Shimla and Hamirpur district of Himachal during the last 24 hours. Normal life was thrown out of gear in several parts of the state as heavy rainfall caused road blocks due to landslides and uprooting of trees. The met department has also issued warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places of the state for the next 24 hours.

The rail service has been hit as 10 trains have been cancelled across the state while 71 more trains have been diverted so far. A 30-meter block of railway track was swept away near Nagpur and work is on to restore it.

Situation grim in Konaseema, rains hit Telangana, coastal Andhra

Water levels receded on Tuesday in all the rivers and streams that were in spate in Coastal Andhra and North Telangana, but the floods continued to trouble people in East Godavari, West Godavari, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam districts following a fresh spell of rain.

The death toll rose to 18, with more casualties being reported from districts and six in Hyderabad itself following a wall collapse at Moula Ali.

Uttarakhand teen, who survived 85-ft fall, succumbs to her injuries at AIIMS after 16 days

More than a month after the monsoon mayhem that killed thousands in Uttarakhand, the death of yet another person from the flood-ravaged state sounds routine news.

But Pooja Singh Thiyal's story needs to be told, if only for her sheer grit to fight till her last breath and for the tireless effort of army and air force personnel to save her.

Unfortunately, their efforts came to a naught as Pooja, who survived after falling into an 85-ft-deep gorge, finally succumbed to her injuries at the trauma centre of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Tuesday. She was the only victim who was airlifted to the Capital for treatment by the Indian Air Force.

Kerala monsoon: Rain-related death toll touches 143

Two persons died in rain-related incidents on Wednesday taking the overall toll to 143 since the onset of the monsoon season, disaster management officials said.

Those killed in rain-related incidents on Wednesday are: Sunil Kumar, 38 from Kongad in Palakkad and Kiran G, 14, from Hosdurg in Kasargod. Both of them drowned following heavy rain, officials said.

RAIN, FLOODS CLAIM 22 LIVES IN AP

As many as 22 people were killed and crops in over 60,000 hectares suffered damage due to heavy rains that has lashed Andhra Pradesh for a week now. Besides the death of 22 people, five persons sustained injuries in various rain-related incidents, official sources said on Friday.
They did not provide details of the rain-related deaths. Standing cotton, soya bean, maize, paddy and pulses crops were damaged in 60,466 hectares in eight districts, which were worst hit by the downpour, they said.

Bhubaneswar/Baripada: With incessant rain raising water level in two major rivers, Odisha government on Friday asked collectors of four northern districts to keep a vigil on the situation, even as fire brigade personnel rescued 60 boys from a state run ashram school in Mayurbhanj district.

"We have rescued 60 male students at an ashram school in Brahmangaon village. Flood water of Budhabalang river had encircled the school and hostel where they were staying. The children were trapped since last night," Bidhan Chandra Ray, block development officer of Bangirposi block, told PTI.

Many rivers, including the Ganga, the Yamuna, Ram Ganga, Sharda, Rapti, Ghaghra and Gomti, are in spate. According to the relief commissioner's office, nearly one million hectare of cultivable land has been destroyed and 299 livestock killed in 15 districts.

Heavy rain in several districts has compounded the problem.

Crore relief for flood-hit Maha regions

With more than 200 persons dying in floods in Maharashtra, the state government on Thursday announced a relief package of Rs1,935 crore for flood-hit regions.

Heavy rainfall in Vidarbha, Konkan and other parts of the state has caused damage and destruction over the last few days, with the death toll reaching at least 237.

Vidarbha is among the worst-hit, where 107 persons were reported dead.

Maharashtra: 20 Killed in Chandrapur Floods
CHANDRAPUR (MAHARASHTRA) | AUG 02, 2013

Heavy rains and flood in the district have claimed as many as 20 lives in the recent past, District Collector Dr Deepak Mhaisekar said here today.

Rs 24 lakh have been distributed as compensation to the kin of the victims, he said adding that alert has been issued to the people from low-lying areas along the river banks in the city and the villages in the district due to a forecast that water level might increase further in next 48 hours.

"28,000 families have been shifted to safer places so far and the number of families that were affected due to floods is 9198," he informed.

152 killed in UP floods, five lakh displaced

LUCKNOW: The death toll in the flood fury in Uttar Pradesh climbed up to 152 on Monday as most rivers continued to flow over the danger mark and heavy rains added to people's woes. Over five lakh people have been displaced.


However, the government is yet help villagers who have been deprived of their livelihood due to waters claiming their lands.

Several villages in Andhra Pradesh still marooned in flood water

The flood situation in the Agency areas under Bhadrachalam and Palvancha divisions remained grave as more than 110 villages and vast tracks of agricultural fields still marooned by floodwater in both the divisions.

Although the flood level in the Godavari started receding slowly at Bhadrachalam, road communications to more than 300 villages in Wajedu, Charla, Chintur, Kunavaram, V R Puram, Dummugudem and other flood-hit mandals remained cut off. People living in more than 500 villages in 14 mandals under the two divisions remained without electricity for the consecutive fourth day.

One killed in landslide in Uttarakhand, efforts on to trace Almora SDM

Dehradun: One person was killed and another severely injured in a landslide in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district on Sunday even as efforts were intensified to trace Almora SDM Ajay Arora, who slipped off a makeshift bridge and fell into the Mandakini river five days back.

"A passerby was killed while another sustained serious injuries in a landslide triggered by rains near a mountain in Jhulaghat area of Pithoragarh," said officials of Uttarakhand Disaster Mitigation and Management Centre.

Rains claim 16 lives in Kerala, Navy called in

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rain in Kerala since Sunday afternoon has caused huge loss to life and property, especially in Idukki district, where 14 deaths were reported. Two rain-related deaths were reported from Ernakulam, officials said.

The hilly district of Idukki was the worst affected, as landslides were reported in 16 places, state revenue minister Adoor Prakash, who reached the district to personally supervise mitigation and relief efforts, said on Monday.
