TEPCO chairman apologizes

The chairman of the Tokyo Electric Power Company has apologized for trouble and anxiety caused by radiation leaks from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Soil checked for radiation before rice planting

Japan's agriculture ministry is to check soil around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant for radiation, before the start of rice planting next month.
Levels of radioactive cesium-137 as high as 2,200 times the normal figure have been detected in soil about 40 kilometers northwest of the plant.
Cesium-137 stays in the environment for a long time, as it has a half-life of 30 years....

Smoke from Fukushima Daini nuclear plant

Tokyo Electric Power Company says smoke was seen coming out of the turbine building at the No.1 reactor of the Fukushima Daini nuclear plant.
The company notified the fire department after it confirmed smoke was being emitted from around the electric circuit board on the building's first floor shortly before 6:00 PM on Wednesday.

The smoke was no longer visible as of 7:00 PM......

Japan to step up monitoring radiation in waters

The Japanese government announced that it will step up monitoring of radioactive substances in a wide area of water around the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano made the remark at a news conference on Wednesday. The announcement comes after high levels of radioactive iodine-131 were detected at a point 330 meters south of one of the plant's water outlets on Tuesday. The levels were 3,355 times higher than the acceptable limit set by the government.....

Solution to combat particle dispersal to be tested at Japan plant

Tokyo (CNN) -- Tokyo Electric Power Co. will begin spraying a liquid aimed at preventing the dispersal and scattering of nuclear particles in and around the Fukushima Daiichi plant, the company said Wednesday.

The spraying, on a trial basis, will begin Thursday and is dependent on acceptable radiation levels for workers, Tokyo Electric said in a statement. The liquid is said to be able to stick to nuclear particles when it dries -- and will also stick to other particles, such as dust.

One of the liquid's main components is a water-soluble synthetic resin called Kuricoat C-720G, which will be mixed with water before spraying. The resin, which envelops nuclear particles, is also used in glue, the company said. It is manufactured by a Japanese company....

Smoke generation from the turbine building at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 (2nd Release)

On approximately 5:56 pm, March 30th 2011, TEPCO employee discovered smoke
generation from power panel (*)at the turbine building Unit 1 (Reactor cold
shoutdown). On 5:57 pm, March 30th 2011, TEPCO immediately reported this
incident to the fire department.

Subsequently the fire department consisting of TEPCO employee inspected the
area. On approximately 6:13 pm, March 30th 2011,we confirmed the smoke
generation stopped after interrupt electrical supply to the power panel.

From now, the fire department will conduct inspection around the area.

TEPCO will also conduct an investigation into a cause in detail.
This incident will not cause any effect of radiation externally.
(Previously announced on March 30th, 2011)

On 7:15 pm, March 30th 2011, the fire department made a judgmental decision
that this incident was caused fault of the power panel, they found no signs
of fire.

Many countries helping Japan tame N-plant

Countries around the world have pitched in with equipment, materials and experts to help bring the critical situation at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant under control.

Although radiation levels monitored around the plant are on the decline, fine dust mixed with radioactive materials have been detected in the air.

The results of nuclide analyses of radioactive materials in the air at the site of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (10th release)

On March 22nd 2011, as part of monitoring activity of the surrounding
environment, we conducted nuclide analysis of radioactive materials
contained in the air which were collected at the site of Fukushima Daiichi
Nuclear Power Station, which was damaged by Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyo-Oki
Earthquake. As a result, radioactive materials were detected and
therefore, we summarized the results and reported them to Nuclear and
Industry Safety Agency as well as to the government of Fukushima
Prefecture. (previously announced)

On March 30th, 2011, we conducted nuclide analysis of radioactive
materials contained in the air which were collected on the same date at
the site of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. As a result,
radioactive materials were detected as shown in the attachment. Therefore,
we summarized the results and reported them to Nuclear and Industry Safety
Agency as well as to the government of Fukushima Prefecture today.

We are planning to conduct these surveys continuously.

Up to 1,000 bodies left untouched near troubled nuke plant

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Radiation fears have prevented authorities from collecting as many as 1,000 bodies of victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami from within the 20-kilometer-radius evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, police sources said Thursday.

One of the sources said bodies had been "exposed to high levels of radiation after death." The view was supported by the detection Sunday of elevated levels of radiation on a body found in Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture, about 5 km from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station....

Students cancel enrollment at universities in disaster-stricken area over radiation fears

Public and private universities in Fukushima Prefecture, which hosts Japan's troubled nuclear power plant, have received a barrage of inquiries about radiation, and some would-be students have cancelled their enrollments over radiation fears.
According to data compiled by the Mainichi Shimbun, at least 11 would-be students had cancelled their enrollments for universities in Fukushima Prefecture as of March 30 over fears related to earthquakes and the nuclear crisis. All of the universities which have had cancellations are located outside the zones around the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant designated for evacuation or staying indoors. In addition, the levels of radiation in the areas where the universities are located are very low. Experts are urging people to "act calmly"....

Detection of radioactive materials from the seawater around the discharge canal of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station(11th release)

On March 21st 2011, radioactive materials were detected from the seawater
around the discharge canal (south) of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power
Station which was damaged by the 2011 Tohoku-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake.
This is the result of the sampling survey of radioactive materials in the
seawater which was implemented as a part of monitoring activity of
surrounding environment. We have informed the result to Nuclear and
Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) and Fukushima prefecture.

On March 30th 2011, we have conducted re-sampling survey to examine the
effect of radioactive materials in the seawater. Today, we have informed
the result to Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) and the
government of Fukushima Prefecture, because radioactive materials were

The detection of radioactive materials in the water on 1st basement of turbine building at the site of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

On March 28th 2011, we received advice from Nuclear Safety Commission of
Japan to conduct sampling survey of the water on the first basement of
turbine building of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station as well as to
reinforce the sampling survey of seawater in order to secure safety and to
monitor the leakage of the water on the basement into underground and/ or
sea.

On March 30th, 2011, we conducted nuclide analysis of radioactive
materials, the sample of which was collected from the water on 1st
basement (sub drain) of turbine building at the site of Fukushima Daiichi
Nuclear Power Station. Because radioactive materials were detected as a
result, as shown in the attachment, we reported the result to Nuclear and
Industry Safety Agency as well as to the government of Fukushima
Prefecture today.

Radiation detected in beef, vegetables

Radiation exceeding safety standards has been detected in beef from Fukushima and vegetables from Ibaraki, Tochigi and Chiba prefectures.
The health ministry says it detected 510 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium, above than the national limit of 500, in round beef from a cow raised in a village in Fukushima prefecture on Wednesday. The beef has not been shipped.....

Researcher explains how radiation reaches Tokyo

IAEA: High level of iodine-131 outside zone

The International Atomic Energy Agency has revealed that iodine-131 was the radioactive substance that exceeded its criterion for evacuation in a village 40 kilometers from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
The agency did not give the name of the substance at its news conference on Wednesday.
The village of Iitate to the northwest of the plant is outside the 20 kilometer exclusion zone and the 20 to 30 kilometer alert zone where the Japanese government advises voluntary evacuation....

Tokyo Electric Power Company is going to get a massive hollow floating platform from Shizuoka City. TEPCO plans to use it to store radioactive water at its crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Higher radiation levels on SDF helicopters

Higher than normal levels of radiation have been detected on Ground Self-Defense Force helicopters that flew over the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant even after decontamination.

Radioactive water leaking from No.2 reactor crack

Tap water safe again

1,000 millisieverts per hour equals 1 sievert per hour, which is at the lower end of a fatal dose. A dose of 6 sieverts over a short period is nearly 100% fatal within a matter of days or weeks. Also, that measurement was taken in the air above the water. Contact with the water itself could deliver an even higher dose.

If somebody hasn't confused millisieverts (0.001 Sv) with microsieverts (0.000001 Sv), then that's the most alarming news I've heard since the reactor buildings exploded.

I hope there is a mistake in the units because data have been reported in both mSv (millisieverts) and uSv (microsieverts) and the media has been throwing around both terms, probably not realizing that 1 mSv equals 1,000 uSv.
