Minister holds meeting with senior officials to take stock of Perambra situation
The Health Department is on high alert in the district after the death of three members of a family at Perambra due to fever over the past fortnight.

Excise Minister T.P. Ramakrishnan, who is the Minister in charge of the district, held meetings with senior officials on Saturday to take stock of the situation.

Sources in the department said that Mohammed Sadik, 26, Mohammed Salih, 28, who are brothers, and Mariyam, 50, their paternal aunt, of Panthirikkara Sooppikkada in Changaroth grama panchayat, near Perambra, died on May 5 and May 18 due to viral encephalitis with myocarditis. Moosa, 55, father of Salih and Sadik, and Atifa, 19, Salih's fianc?e, are undergoing treatment at private hospitals in Kozhikode and Kochi.

Their father Moosa (62), Salih?s wife Fathima (19) and Moosa?s brother?s wife Mariyam (50) are infected and are admitted at a private hospital in Kozhikode. The unconfirmed message spreading states that Nipah virus is causing the death.

Perambra, Kozhikode: A rare fever that has killed three of a family in Changaroth panchayat here could have been caused by the Nipah virus (NiV), health officials say. Muhammad Sabith and Muhammad Salih, sons of Valachuketti Moosa, died on May 5 and 18, respectively. Musa's brother Moideen's wife Mariam, 50, succumbed on Saturday to the disease which has its origins in fruit bats.

Kozhikode reports another suspected Encephalitis death, toll rises to 3

KOZHIKODE: The death toll due to the viral encephalitis at Changaroth grama panchayat in the district rose to three with the death of a woman at a private hospital on Saturday.
Health minister K K Shailaja told media persons after a meeting of top health officials and district administration on Saturday that a `rare virus' was responsible for the deaths.
"The tests conducted at Manipal virology lab have revealed that a rare virus which is not commonly found in the state has caused the deaths. The samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune to ascertain the exact type of virus and we are expecting the results tomorrow or day after," said the health minister.

Unknown virus kills three, Kerala government sends SOS to Centre; six critical
The Kerala government has asked the Centre to send experts after three members of a family died on being infected with an unknown virus. Six others are in serious condition and 25 are under observation.

We are expecting results in a couple of days,” the minister said adding there was no need for any panic. However, she said this is the first time such an outbreak is being reported from the state and asked the Centre to rush a team of experts.

When asked whether infection was triggered by NiV virus Dr Arun Kumar of the Manipal Centre for Research who is camping in the district for last two days, said it cannot be confirmed at this juncture.

“No need for any panic. The disease has been confined to a small area,” he said.

The cause of death of two people, ostensibly suffering from fever, in Kozhikode has now been confirmed to be due to the Nipah virus (NiV), spread by fruit bats and causing severe disease in both animals and humans, a top official said on Sunday.

Kerala Health Secretary Rajiv Sadanandan told IANS that they have now got the confirmation from the National Institute of Virology, Pune.
'A central team of the Indian Council of Medical Research is arriving at Kozhikode tomorrow (Monday). There is no reason for any panic at all, as this can be managed and we have already started our work towards that. There was a similar issue in Bangladesh and it has been managed well. We have already informed the Centre about this,' he said.

Two more suspected deaths in Kozhikode district
While the presence of Nipah virus has been confirmed in the blood and body fluid samples of two persons who died due to viral fever in the past fortnight, two more are suspected to have died in similar circumstances in Kozhikode district of Kerala.

District Collector U.V. Jose told The Hindu on Sunday that the laboratory results from National Virology Institute, Pune, had confirmed that the deceased were inflicted with the virus. District Medical Officer V. Jayasree gave the names of those who died on Sunday as Ismail of Koottalida and Velayudhan of Kolathur. However, it was yet to be confirmed that they were inflicted with the virus, she said.

Three persons from a family had died due to virus encephalitis and mycarditis in the past two weeks. Nine others, including some of their family members, and those who had interacted with them, are under treatment at government and private hospitals.

KOZHIKODE: The Heath Department on Sunday confirmed the disease which claimed the lives of three persons from a single family at Perambra in Kozhikode was due to the infection of rare virus Nipah. The latest revelation has come after testing body fluid samples taken from the deceased at the National Institute of Virology, Pune.The lab report, which confirmed the presence of Nipah virus in blood and fluid collected from the victims? brains, was received by health department on Sunday evening. The samples were taken from Muhammad Salih, 26, his brother Muhammad Sabith, 23, and his paternal aunt Mariyam, 50 ? all from a single family in Perambra.

Meanwhile, the death toll rose to five and condition of nine infected persons remains critical at various hospitals in the district. Of the nine people, seven were kept in an isolation ward at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.
