Toll 47 in region as three more succumb to swine flu

NAGPUR: Three more people passed away from swine flu in the city on Wednesday. Two of them were undergoing treatment at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and one at Orange City Hospital and Research Institute (OCHRI). Meanwhile, 17 more people from the division whose samples were processed at the microbiology lab of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) tested positive for the disease.

Hingna resident Narbahadur Uchai, 40, and Saoner resident Ravindra Kapse, 30, who were undergoing treatment at GMCH succumbed to the disease, as did 73-year-old Sadar resident Abdul Gaffar who was at OCHRI. Of the 17 patients who tested positive on Wednesday, one is at IGGMCH while 14 are being treated at GMCH.

A Bhayander-resident and a Nashik-resident became the latest victims of swine flu over the past two days, taking the death toll across Mumbai to 17.
Both were cases of hypertension, indicating the high mortality rate among patients suffering from co-morbid conditions. Of the total H1N1 virus deaths, 35 per cent cases were reported to have hypertension.

[h=1]First case of pediatric death due to Swine flu[/h] A three-year-old boy succumbed to H1N1 virus infection on Thursday in Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital, becoming the first case of a pediatric death due to the infection. The boy, a Bhayander resident, was admitted in Children hospital in the city and later shifted to Andheri?s Kokilaben hospital on February 3 for treatment.
According to the civic officials, he died due to respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome and bilateral pneumonia due to H1N1 virus.

Pune: Four more persons died due to the H1N1 virus, taking the total death toll in the city from swine flu to 28 since January 1 this year. As many as 59 positive cases were reported between Friday and Saturday.

Sixty-seven-year-old Surekha Deshpande from Belgaum and 50-year-old Milind Yawalkar from Jalgaon passed away at KEM Hospital due to H1N1.

MUMBAI: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has said the state will bear all expenses related to the treatment of H1N1 patients, even as unseasonal showers increased fears about the rise in infections.

He said about 90% of the state's swine flu patients were from Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Latur. He said the disease was under control everywhere, except Latur, and the state health machinery had been put on high alert in the district.

"Our analysis says that influenza H1N1 has peaked this season. There are great chances that the rain will eliminate the virus," said Dr Abhay Chaudhary, director, Haffkine Research Insti tute. But he cautioned that the virus may thrive if the rain continues or if the extreme difference between day and night temperature continues.

Chaudhary said 25% samples being tested for flu were positive for viral infections."H1N1 (A) constitutes only 60% of the cases testing positive for seasonal flu. There are other viruses too in circulation, such as H3N2," he added.

One more swine flu death in city

Nagpur: Swine flu deaths of Nagpur rose to 59 as a 39-year-old man admitted at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) succumbed to the disease. Meanwhile, 26 more patients tested H1N1 positive on Sunday and Monday.

Since January 1, 59 of the 312 people from Nagpur division, who have tested positive for the disease, have died.

Maharashtra swine flu toll reaches 152

With Maharashtra experiencing a sudden bout of unseasonal rain and a sharp drop in temperatures, the swine flu death toll in the State has soared to 152.

With a raw nip prevalent in the air, State health authorities struggled to cope with the rapid pace of the infection even as Health Minister Deepak Sawant cancelled the leaves of doctors.

The numbers of swine flu-afflicted have drastically risen to 1,789 ? a steep rise of 600 fresh cases in barely 72 hours. 12 deaths were recorded across the State in the last 24 hours.

Janrao Mule (70) of Kasola village under Mangrulpir taluka of the adjoining Washim district died due to H1N1 virus at a private clinic in Akola yesterday, they said.
However, unofficial reports claimed that two more people ? one in Wadegaon village and a school girl ? have succumbed to swineflu.

A 35-year-old Borivali woman succumbed to swine flu on Tuesday, taking the death toll in Mumbai to three this year. The deadly virus has killed 161 people in the rest of the state.

The civic body had set up a death investigation review committee to look into the deaths of 17 people who were shifted to city hospitals from out of Mumbai.

"Of the 17 deaths, four were not due to swine flu. These patients succumbed to the co-morbid conditions and swine flu was not the primary cause of their deaths," said Gomare. The committee also studied two death reports of Mumbai patients, of which one wasn't confirmed as swine flu death.

Two more succumb to swine flu in Pune

PUNE: Two people died of swine flu in the city on Tuesday, taking the number of H1N1 casualties to 34 in Pune and eight in Pimpri Chinchwad this year, so far. Natha Dhawade (71), a resident of Elpane village in Shrigonda taluka (Ahmednagar), was admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic on February 27 after he complained of breathlessness along with loose motions. A patient of aplastic anemia, Dhawade was put on ventilator around 12.30pm on Sunday after his condition deteriorated. He died of swine flu-induced pneumonia with acute respiratory distress syndrome at 3.45pm on Tuesday. Vidyarani Laxman Badime (35), a resident of Vadgaon Budruk, developed influenza-like illness on February 7.

Swine flu toll rises to two in Akola

Akola: The death toll due to swine flu (H1N1) rose to two in the district following the death of a woman suspected to be suffering from the flu here on Monday, official sources said.

The diseased has been identified as Jyoti Ballal (28) of Annabhau Sathe Nagar in Akot File area of Akola.

Earlier, a day ago, one 70-year-old Janrao Muley had died of the deadly flu.

NAGPUR: The death toll of swine flu in Nagpur division rose to 63 on Monday. While two more patients in the city succumbed to the disease, reports of two others, who had passed away earlier, confirmed that they were suffering from swine flu.

The two deaths on Tuesday were of 62-year Narayan Taywade from Kalmeshwar who was admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Jaripatka resident Devchand Parde (54) who was admitted to Orange City Hospital and Research Institute (OCHRI).
