Dengue fever is still on the rise

PUTRAJAYA : A total of 1,946 cases were recorded in the second week of January (5 to 12) and it saw a rise of 907 cases.
Health Ministry deputy director general (public health) Datuk Dr Lokman Hakim said the increase in dengue cases in the country must be looked at seriously.

"It is only the second week of January, and the cases are rising. On the first week of the month, 1,039 cases were reported," he said in a statement.

Dr Lokman said in so far, two deaths have been reported in Perak making the cumulative deaths for this year up to six deaths as compared to the same period of the same year, which saw only two deaths...

Health Ministry to take drastic measures to stem dengue outbreak, says Subra
January 24, 2014

KAJANG, Jan 24 ? Beginning this week, the Health Ministry will take drastic measures to stem the spread of dengue when it introduces three new methods, said minister, Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.

He said the methods comprise the spraying of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) spaces, temephos spraying (Abate 500E) and autocidal trap to trap and kill the mosquito larva and mosquitoes.

He said the methods would initially be used in the Petaling district of Selangor...

...He said 6,155 dengue cases were reported nationwide from January 1 to 22, this year, involving 10 deaths.

This was an increase of 4,363 cases or 243 per cent as compared to only 1,792 cases for the same period last year, at five deaths.

Selangor reported 3,168 cases, accounting for 51 per cent of the total cases nationwide during the same period, with Hulu Langat district reporting 936 cases, including two deaths or 15 per cent of cases in the state...

Those were the replies when calls were made to several private hospitals here and Kajang asking if they could admit a patient with dengue.

The Star made the calls after receiving several public complaints from readers whose family members were down with dengue could not be admitted to private hospitals...

Dengue cases in Pahang on the rise, says health department

KUANTAN, Jan 27 ? Eighty-two cases of dengue fever have been reported in Pahang since early January until yesterday.

According to the State Health Director, Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail, this was an increase of more than 70 per cent compared to the same period last year...

KUALA LUMPUR: MEDICAL experts believe that the discovery of a fifth dengue variant in the country is just the tip of a greater risk to human lives.

Their worry is that the discovery of the latest dengue "Den-5" virus by researchers, was a portent of things to come.

Malaysia Medical Association president Datuk Dr N.K.S. Tharmaseelan said dengue researchers believed that the virus had been circulating in the jungles of Malaysia and Indonesia for possibly thousands of years without jumping into the urban transmission cycle.

They believed that that this may no longer be the case.

He said although the virus had not been detected in humans, except for one man in Sarawak who was found to be infected by the Den-5 virus several years ago, the need to keep the strain, as well as other possibly unidentified new dengue variants dormant in these obscure areas, couldn't be more pressing.

The Den-5 virus, exclusive only to Sarawak so far, is claimed to be the fifth dengue strain to be detected in the country.

It is the first new subtype in 50 years and those in medicine believe that this could be another challenge to the development of a dengue vaccine...

GETTING WORSE: Cases expected to hit 13,000 by weekend

PUTRAJAYA: THE dengue situation in the country is worsening with 2,000 cases recorded each week since Jan 1, with 22 deaths.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said as of Tuesday, there were 11,870 dengue cases recorded nationwide, adding that the numbers were expected to reach 13,000 by the end of the week.

"The number of cases has almost quadrupled compared with last year, which saw only 3,112 cases in the same period," he said here yesterday...

New dengue virus variation behind outbreak

PETALING JAYA: The current surge of dengue cases is the result of a change in variation of the dengue virus, the Health Ministry said.

Deputy Health director-general Datuk S. Jeyaindran said there was usually an outbreak whenever there was a change in the dengue virus serotype as fewer people would be immune to the serotype after the change.

Moreover, the current serotype, DEN-2, was more virulent, he said, adding: ?That is why we are seeing more deaths.?

It was reported that 10,712 cases and 19 deaths were reported this year up to Feb 6 compared to 2,836 cases and eight deaths over the same period last year...

PETALING JAYA: The current dengue situation is the result of a normal major outbreak cycle and dengue patients should use repellents to prevent mosquitoes from biting them and infecting others, said a professor of virology.

Universiti Malaya dengue expert Prof Dr Sazaly Abu Bakar said there was a major dengue outbreak once every three, seven or eight years.

The current outbreak was a result of this normal major outbreak cycle.

He added that from 2007 to 2010, there had been one major outbreak involving over 45,000 cases, while in 2011 and 2012, the number of infections decreased significantly to less than 25,000 cases...

Subang Jaya municipality records 971 cases last month compared to 108 last year


A WHOPPING 800% increase in dengue cases has been reported in January alone in the Subang Jaya municipality area compared to last year including areas such as Subang Jaya and Puchong.

An alarming 971 cases were reported for the month compared to the 95 cases reported during the corresponding period in 2012 and 108 cases in 2013, said MPSJ president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi...

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 19, 2014): The dengue epidemic continues to rise as the recorded number of cases hit 13,915, which is a 302.2% increase compared to the same week last year.

The increase is nationwide while the number of deaths from dengue hit 25, an increase of 213% when compared to the same week last year...

KUALA LUMPUR: Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam yesterday expressed concern over the rising number of fatalities caused by dengue fever with 29 deaths recorded from January till Feb 22.

38 dead from dengue since Jan 1

KAJANG, March 2
Dengue has claimed 38 lives in the first 2 months of the year compared with 8 cases over the same period last year, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.
Based on statistics from Jan 1 to Feb 28, there were 18,047 dengue cases with 38 deaths compared with 4,250 cases and 8 deaths during the same period in 2013.
?The figures represents a 325% increase in the number of dengue cases and a 375% increase in the number of fatalities.
?This drastic increase was caused by the lack of cooperation from the public to ensure their homes are kept clean, among others.
