Relevant because some reports in UK Press say "tigermosquito's are present in the Netherlands". This is true, however these mosquito's were imported, did not breed. Also the "Lucky Bamboo" plants are imported in gel these days, not in water like before. This is done to prevent mosquito's to travel to Europe. Not sure if this really prevents the mosquito's coming in.

Abstract

Import of tigermosquitos in the Netherlands

Since 2005 the tigermosquito, Aedes albopictus, has been occasionally found in green houses with Lucky bamboo plants which are imported into the Netherlands from south China.

As the tigermosquito is a vector for arboviruses such as dengue and Chikungunya, and dengue is endemic in south China, research is conducted to determine the settlement of the mosquito in the Netherlands.

Although Aedes albopictus is occasionally found, there are no indications of arbovirus infection yet. However, vigilance is needed as long as mosquitoes are being imported.

Looking at the complete colonizzation of Italy by that "imported" tiger, if they indeed didn't breed in Netherlands, probably they would after more climate warmings of the area.

The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) has again been spotted in the Netherlands, the farm and environment institute CLM said on Tuesday.

The mosquito, which spreads dengue fever, has been spotted in several greenhouses where ornamental bamboo is being cultivated, news agency ANP reports.

Last year, plant importers were warned to take steps to eradicate the eggs and larvae.

Dengue fever leads to fever, headaches and muscle pain and sometimes a rash. The mosquito takes its name from its black and white striped legs.

Apparently Tiger Mosquito's can be destroyed with the current pesticides, however larvea not. The temporary use of an other pesticide has been allowed. Swift action. No word on more control of imports of "lucky bamboo".

Holland is a centre of trade in flowers and plants, millions of "lucky bamboo" plants (not bamboo..; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracaena_sanderiana ) are transported every year.

It is sure that importing in gel doesn't prevent tiger mosquitoes traveling to Europe. Most tiger mosquitoes were found at nurseries that import Lucky bamboo in gel.

Small wrigglers not inhibited. Larger wrigglers can get into trouble. Some get trapped and die but not all.
Broms filled with gel to near the surface wrigglers tend to die from overheating.
An experiment completed by me showed that not one ant would drink water where gel was present. Even low levels like 20% gel in the water are avoided completely by green ants. They drank only from the control flasks which had no gel.
An experiment to see if mossies breed in water with gel present is now completed. I have sterilized the water using the same samples that I previously had wrigglers in. Microwaved a couple of times to destroy wrigglers and possible predators. Three months on none of the gel containing containers developed mosquito larvae. Three control (no gel) flasks all developed mosquito larvae. I have a feeling that fresh gel does not work so well. I need to check this out.

Holland is stepping up surveillance of Tiger Mosquito's .

Not only in greenhouses with Lucky Bamboo, also at some places near highways, were trucks park coming from southern Europe.

Also imported used tyres could be a way for the mosquito's to travel here.

Abstract:

The increasing importance of vector-borne diseases in the Netherlands.

The last few years Europe faced outbreaks of several ?new? vector-borne diseases, such as bluetongue and Chikungunya, transmitted by endemic or newly introduced arthropods.

The changes in the environment contribute to the survival and further spread of certain arthropods. This increases the risk of the spreading of vector-borne diseases in Europe, such as Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE).

Also the chances for survival and spread of exotic vectors, such as the Asian tiger mosquito and the tick Dermacentor reticulates, increases. Already in 2004 the Dutch Health Council mentioned that vector-borne diseases will become more important in the near future, and knowledge in this field should improve.

On initiative of the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority and the Centre for Infectious Disease Control Netherlands a working group of scientists and policymakers of various disciplines within the field of vectors and vector-borne diseases was founded.

Sharing knowledge in this field should eventually lead to a faster response to new threats. In this article we describe the most important arthropod vectors and their transmitted infectious diseases regarding the Netherlands.

De tijgermug is dit jaar voor het eerst in "een niet afgesloten ruimte" aangetroffen. Een ander woord voor "buiten" denk ik zo. Te lezen in de brief van minister Klink aan de 2e Kamer.

Het commentaar van Bart Knols liegt er niet om. Er is in Nederland denk ik niemand te vinden, die meer weet van muggen dan Bart Knols.

De bestrijding heeft plaats op advies van het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu. Nog geen van de aangetroffen muggen is drager van ziekteverwekkende virussen of parasieten.


Medisch entomoloog Bart Knols, die een boek schreef over het gevaar van tropische muggen in Nederland, reageert cynisch op de bekendmaking van VWS. „De Amerikaanse Bandenmug werd al in augustus 2009 in Brabant aangetroffen. Het heeft een jaar geduurd voordat de drie betrokken ministeries –VROM, VWS en LNV– daadkracht tonen. Dat kun je geen adequaat optreden noemen.”

Volgens Knols is ook elders in Europa geprobeerd de muggen te bestrijden nadat ze vaste voet aan de grond hadden gekregen. „Op veel plaatsen was de vestiging van de muggen definitief.”

Knols citeert uit een brief van minister Klink waarin deze er op wijst dat de muggen „geen groot gevaar voor de volksgezondheid opleveren.” Knols: „Klink bagatelliseert de situatie. Exotische muggen zijn potentiële verspreiders van infectieziekten, zoals het Westnijlvirus en Knokkelkoorts (Dengue). „Het Westnijlvirus veroorzaakt in de VS jaarlijks duizenden ziektegevallen en tientallen doden.”

Zoektocht naar 'zieke' muggen gaat door

EINDHOVEN - In Brabant zijn de afgelopen maanden nog geen muggen met een ziekteverwekkend virus gevonden. Wel zijn vele dode larven van deze exotische insecten gevonden.

De larven zijn het slachtoffer geworden van bestrijdingsmiddelen, die muggenvangers hebben gebruikt. De zoektocht naar muggen bij bandenhandelaren in Heijningen, Oosterhout en Oss gaat voorlopig door.

De exotische muggen kunnen tropische ziekten overbrengen.

Aanleiding voor het onderzoek was de vondst eind juli van drie van die muggen. De Amerikaanse rotspoelmug werd aangetroffen in Oss. In Heijningen en Oosterhout werden de Aziatische tijgermug en de gelekoortsmug gevangen.

Bart Knols, entomoloog bij de Universiteit van Amsterdam en schrijver van het boek Mug, roept de Tweede Kamer en de betrokken ministeries op om de problematiek van invasieve exotische muggen serieus te nemen. Er moet veel sneller en krachtdadiger worden opgetreden om vestiging van de muggen en de daarmee gepaard gaande gezondheidsrisico’s te voorkomen.

Ernst Jan Scholte, coördinator bestrijding bij het ministerie van LNV, meldt dat bij de bandenimporteurs waar exotische muggen zijn gevonden, terughoudend wordt omgegaan met de inzet van chemische middelen tegen de volwassen muggen. Dit vanwege de bijwerkingen van het middel. Volgens Scholte bestaat er voor bandenimporteurs die gezondheidsbedreigende muggen invoeren geen wetgeving en wordt er nog nagedacht over maatregelen om deze invoerroute aan te pakken.

Knols waarschuwt dat met alle afstemming tussen ministeries en al het gepolder in Nederland veel tijd verloren gaat. De exotische muggen krijgen daardoor steeds meer kans om zich hier te vestigen en voor altijd hier te blijven.

Correctie: niet de primeur. In de vorige eeuw vonden diverse dengue epidemieën plaats in Griekenland.


Frankrijk heeft Europese primeur: de 1e dengue patient

In Frankrijk is de eerste patient met dengue koorts (knokkelkoorts) gevonden die in Frankrijk zelf is besmet.

Tot nu toe zijn de dengue patienten in Europa elders besmet geraakt, de ziekte werd na thuiskomst ontdekt. Ook in Nederland komen jaarlijks 10-tallen mensen thuis met een bijzonder souvenir: dengue.

Het virus wordt van mens op mens overgebracht door muggen, meer in het bijzonder de zgn "tijgermug". In het zuiden van Europa is deze mug aan een opmars bezig.

Onlangs werden de 1e tijgermuggen ook in Nederland aangetroffen. In ons land worden deze muggen ingevoerd via planten uit China of 2e-hands autobanden.

Het is niet uitgesloten dat vrachtwagens ook deze lifter mee kunnen nemen.

Als het klimaat bij ons warmer wordt, zou de tijgermug zich ook in Nederland kunnen gaan thuisvoelen.

In 2007 vond in Italië een uitbraak plaats van "Chikungunya" , wordt ook door muggen overgebracht. Simpel gezegd: een ziekte vergelijkbaar met Dengue, maar dan meestal milder. Iemand nam de ziekte mee uit het buitenland en vervolgens raakten meer dan 200 mensen besmet.

Een herhaling van deze uitbraak - eventueel ook met dengue - is niet denkbeeldig. Daarom worden in Italië meteen maatregelen genomen als iemand gevonden is met een dengue of chikungunya besmetting: Gemeenten gaan spuiten tegen muggen; mensen worden opgeroepen om rond huis en tuin geen druppel open water (vijvers, schoteltje onder een bloempot enz. enz.) te laten staan. Een tijgermug heeft aan een omgekeerde flessendop met water voldoende om zich voort te planten.

In Nederland hebben we water zat, dus als die mug eenmaal hier is, kunnen we onze lol op. Deze mug houdt niet van grotere oppervlakten water, zoals sloten en plassen. Bij voorkeur plant de tijgermug zich voort in kleine plasjes water, zoals in bijvoorbeeld in dakgoten, regentonnen, bloempotten, maar ook in zwerfvuil, zoals blikjes, plastic of flessendoppen.

Het in de gaten houden en bestrijden van muggen die ziekten kunnen overbrengen, zoals de tijgermug, valt (mede) onder de verantwoordelijkheid van het CIB (Centrum Infectieziekten Bestrijding), onderdeel van het RIVM.

In de praktijk hebben zowel het ministerie van VWS (Volksgezondheid) als LNV (Landbouw, ivm agrarische aspecten: import van planten) bemoeienis met het beleid. Ook het VWA is er bij betrokken. De vraag is of er sprake is van voldoende coördinatie.

Vectoroverdraagbare aandoeningen


In 2010 zal het CIb investeren in de uitbreiding van kennis en expertise op het gebied van vector-borne
infecties. De activiteiten zullen zich richten op de surveillance van vectoren in samenwerking met de
Plantenziektekundige Dienst/Centrum Monitoring Vectoren, het ontwikkelen van (moleculaire)
detectiemethoden van pathogenen in muggen en teken, het bestuderen van introductie en trends van
tekenoverdraagbare pathogenen en het opzetten en uitbreiden van moleculaire epidemiologische
databases van vector-overdraagbare pathogenen.

Daarnaast maakt het CIb een begin met het ontwikkelen en implementeren van bestrijdings- en
interventiemogelijkheden voor vectoroverdraagbare aandoeningen in Nederland. Dit gebeurt voor
hoofdluis door het opzetten van resistentiebepalingen en voor steekmuggen door een bestrijdingsplan
te schrijven. Ook internationaal zal het CIb actief zijn. Onder andere in het ECDC-project Vbornet dat als
doel heeft het ontwikkelen van een netwerk van experts op het gebied van vectoren en vectoroverdraagbare
infectieziekten in Europa.

Dit jaar nog wordt een rapport verwacht :
