Disease resurfaces: Two year old girl diagnosed with polio in Karachi

KARACHI: The National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad has confirmed that a two year-old girl from Machar Colony in Gadap Town of Karachi has been afflicted with the disease.
Two-year old Sana, daughter of Noor Mohammad, is the resident of Machar Colony of Gadap Town.
Additional Secretary Health Sindh Dr Masood Solangi said that stool samples from the girl had tested positive for presence of Poliovirus type P-1. The samples had been sent for examination to Islamabad after she was brought in with symptoms of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) almost month back.
?It is the third case of Polio in Sindh and 26th in the country this year,? Solangi said, adding that a joint team of the Sindh Health Department, World Health Organisation and Unicef will visit the area to examine the case.

One more polio case in Fata

During the last week, one new type-1 wild polio case was reported in the country and that was from Frontier Region Bannu (Federally Administered Tribal Areas).



This, according to an official at Prime Minister?s Polio Monitoring and Coordination Cell, brings the total number of wild polio cases to 25 in 2013 compared to 37 during the same time period last year from 12 districts, towns, tribal agencies or areas compared to 22 during the same time period last year. The official said that polio outbreak in Fata continued, bringing the total number of wild polio cases from the region to 15 (60 per cent of the total wild polio cases reported in the country during 2013 so far). He said that the National Immunisation Days (NIDs) were completed last week in 101 districts of the country, while 16 districts were in the process of conducting NIDs in a staggered or phased manner and 41 districts were scheduled to begin NIDs this week.

Pakistan warns of polio outbreak after fresh cases

MIRAMSHAH: Health officials in Pakistan on Wednesday warned of a serious polio outbreak after the disease was detected in 16 children in a tribal district where militant groups have banned vaccination.

Doctor Khayal Mir Jan, the top health official in Pakistan's militant-infested North Waziristan tribal district, on the Afghan border, told AFP that thousands of children were at risk.

Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world where the highly infectious, crippling disease remains endemic. Infections shot up from a low of 28 in 2005 to almost 200 last year.

?Polio virus has been detected in 16 children since the Taliban ban,? Jan told AFP. ?We are waiting for the result of the stool samples of another 42 children suspected of having the disease...?

Teachers refuse to take part in Swabi polio drive

Due to the volatile security situation, around 40 teachers in Swabi refused to take part in a polio immunisation campaign that started on Tuesday.

The group of 40 teachers, led by All Teachers Association Swabi chapter President Muhammad Tariq Khan, in a meeting with Swabi Deputy Commissioner (DC) Capt (retd) Kamran Ahmad Afridi on Wednesday decided they would not take part in the vaccination campaign.

Tariq told the DC attacks on polio teams had caused several teachers to complain about the law and order situation. He said while the teachers believed it was possible to vaccinate children in Swabi, they refused to administer drops to children in Pabini, Boqa, Jhanda, Kund and surrounding areas, stating police could not provide acceptable security.

Tariq further told the DC it was not the duty of education department employees to vaccinate children. ?The health department should find a way to solve this issue as teachers are supposed to teach as opposed to vaccinating children in a threatening environment...?

D.I.Khan: Polio virus reported in lunda sharif village of Dera Ismail khan, a five-year old girl, Samina Bibi D/O Sana Ullah is reported to be having Polio virus, sources in District Headquarters and Teaching hospital Dera ismail khan conforms but the public health department DI khan is not verified it so far. The medics at the DHQ, DI khan suspect Samina Bibi having Polio virus, who was brought here. Hospital sources added that Samina bibi?s polio test will be sent to National Laboratory Islamabad for verification...

?Our fears have now turned into reality,? said the head of the World Health Organisation?s Polio Eradication Initiative, as 10 new cases of the crippling virus were reported in North Waziristan on Tuesday. The new cases bring the total number of confirmed cases to an appalling 25 from the tribal agency alone.

After 15 months of a self-imposed ban announced by the Taliban warlord Hafiz Gulbahadur in North Waziristan, 82 per cent of the reported cases were children below the age of one, Dr Elyas Durry told The Express Tribune. ?It is a clear manifestation of what is about to hit us in the future if an immunisation campaign does not start soon...?

RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi might lose its polio-free status in the coming days as the National Institute of Health (NIH) has found traces of polio virus from the city?s sewers for the third time in the last three months.

Recently, the NIH reported that the polio virus had been detected in the sewage-water samples collected from the cities of Rawalpindi and Multan.

In Rawalpindi, samples were collected from Safdarabad area on August 25, while samples from Multan were collected on August 25. The report in this regard, which was recently issued, found samples of the virus in both cities of Punjab...

KOHAT, Sept 26: Unknown miscreants manhandled members of a polio vaccination team in Merozai area on University Road here on Thursday and forced them to leave the area.

The matter has been reported to the district administration. Sources said that the attackers first asked the polio team to suspend the campaign and when it refused the vaccinators were manhandled and forced to leave the area.

They said that a special polio vaccination campaign was launched in Kohat after a three-year-old child was found to be polio affected in Afghan refugee camp in Jarma here about two weeks ago.

Attacks on polio teams have increased this year in Kohat division. A lady worker was injured in July last when polio vaccination team came under stone attack in Darwesh Nadan Baba area in Thall tehsil of Hangu.

The polio virology laboratory at the National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad confirmed five new polio cases on Sunday ? one each from Peshawar and Khyber Agency and three from North Waziristan Agency (NWA).
An official familiar with the matter said the number of type 1 polio cases reported in 2013 has reached 28 in NWA, 10 in Khyber Agency and two in Peshawar.
?Six-month-old Qurban Ali is a resident of Surezai Payyan, Peshawar and was not vaccinated against the disease,? he said.

PESHAWAR:

The dust had barely settled after a bomb in Garhi Mali Khel targeted law enforcement and polio workers when three more polio cases surfaced in Khyber and North Waziristan agencies on Monday.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Health Department and FATA Secretariat Expanded Programme on Immunisation had launched an anti-polio drive earlier in October in Peshawar and parts of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata). Even though strict security parameters were in play, anti-state elements managed to disrupt the campaign through an attack in Badhaber. Attacks like these make tragedies like the three new cases of polio in Fata all the more possible.

A FATA Secretariat EPI official confirmed the virus was detected in two children from Khyber Agency.

Husna, the daughter of Minabaz, is only 13 months old. The onset of the disease was noted on August 30, 2013, changing her life forever. Husna resides in Spin Kabar, Bara tehsil in Khyber Agency.

Another 13-month-old has also fallen victim to the paralysing virus; a resident of Qambar Khel which is also in Bara. Daud Khan?s son Uzair felt the onset of paralysis on September 10. With these two children, Khyber Agency now has 12 cases of polio, 12 people who could not be accessed by polio workers.

The third case, reported from North Waziristan Agency, is 10-month-old Nasirullah, son of Shal Afzan. September 10 also marked the onset of paralysis for Nasirullah. The family lives in Shameri, Mir Ali tehsil. This is the 11th confirmed case of polio from North Waziristan in 2013.

None of these children had ever received any polio vaccination, confirmed the official...

Pressure cooker bomb kills three during polio campaign

PESHAWAR: A pressure cooker bomb hit a police van protecting a polio vaccination team in Badaber village, in the suburbs of Peshawar on Monday, killing three people, including two policemen, in the latest in a string of attacks affecting the immunisation campaign.

?It was an IED blast and the target was policemen,? SSP (Operations) Najeebur Rehman told AFP, adding that the bomb went off just as officers reached the village to provide security to polio teams...

LAHORE: During the meeting of UN Secretary General?s representative on Human Rights, Abdullah al Maatooq, with more than 30 delegations of Pakistani ulema, it has been highlighted that if polio eradication campaign was not allowed to proceed smoothly, most of the foreign countries might be compelled to impose travel advisory for Pakistani travelers by November or December next, The News has learnt from reliable sources.

According to the sources, in case a travel advisory on this count was prescribed for Pakistanis travelling abroad, the precondition of producing the polio vaccination card might also become necessary.

It has been further revealed that most of the religious scholars have plainly told the UN representative that TTP and some other groups are of the conviction that some office-holders of NGOs and global health organisations have remained engaged, at times, in espionage activities inside Pakistan in the garb of polio eradication campaigns. This ?activity? was not acceptable...
