A 42-year-old woman suffering from swine flu died at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here today. Sukhwinder Kaur, a resident of Beela village near Dhandra in Ludhiana district, was admitted to the hospital six days ago.

Family members of the patient had taken her to the DMCH after observing symptoms of swine flu. She tested positive for the disease at the hospital.

Dr Deepak Bhatia, state nodal officer for swine flu, said this was the eighth death due to swine flu in the state this year and the second reported from the city. Earlier, a patient from Sangrur had died of swine flu while undergoing treatment at the DMCH. Seventeen patients have tested positive for swine flu so far.

11 H1N1 Influenza cases reported in city

In this season, so far, the city has received 41 cases of H1N1 Influenza from various parts of the region. In order to contain the infection, emphasis is being placed on contact tracing and providing chemoprophylaxis to high-risk contacts.

Eleven positive H1N1 cases have been reported from Chandigarh while the rest of the cases are from other states.

House visits for the positive cases are being conducted by the Swine Flu Cell of the Health Department, UT Chandigarh, for line listing of contacts. Preventive medicines (Chemoprophylaxis) are being provided free of cost to the direct contacts of the H1N1 positive cases.

3 new H1N1 cases

City hospitals witnessed three new cases of H1N1 on Monday. Swine flu scare has gripped this Punjab town as a middle-aged man died of the disease late on Monday at a private hospital here, officials said.

Bharpur Singh, who hailed from Faridkot district, had come to Ludhiana to attend a family function and fell ill.

In an unprecedented spurt in H1N1 cases in the state, Gurgaon reported its first swine flu death this year. Two other positive cases were reported from different hospitals across the city in January.

?The patient had come in with respiratory problems and later died of the H1N1 virus,? said an official at the hospital on the condition of anonymity.

However, the Gurgaon health department is yet to confirm the first swine flu death of 2013.

?We will cross-check the samples on Thursday and only then we will confirm. We?ve also administered Tamiflu vaccine to the victim?s family as a precautionary measure,? said Dr Parveen Garg, chief medical officer, Gurgaon district.

On the other hand, two positive cases, one each at Alchemist Hospital and Artemis Health Sciences have been reported in the last one week.

As per the health department, Alchemist Hospital had reported a case wherein a 32-year-old man was treated for swine flu and later quarantined at his residence in the city.

In another case, yet to be confirmed by the health department, a man in his mid-thirties had been admitted with swine flu at Artemis Health Sciences.

?The patient had symptoms similar to that of common flu. He was admitted last week and is recovering. We have kept him in isolation,? said Dr Vishal Sehgal, head of emergency and in-patient services at Artemis Health Sciences.

Meanwhile, doctors say this was not the season for the spread of the H1N1 virus.

?The peak season for the spread of the virus is just before the onset of winter and post winter. Now, it is too cold for the virus to spread. As the disease is highly communicable, the health department officials should try to find out how the virus has spread,? said Dr SP Yadav of Pushpanjali Hospital.

Another positive case of swine flu has come to light at Khatrawan village in Sirsa. Naseeb Kaur, 60-year-old woman of the village, has been found infected with the H1N1 virus.

Her sample has been found positive, confirmed the Deputy Civil Surgeon, Dr Viresh Bhushan.

The woman is getting treatment at a private hospital in Sirsa.

This is the sixth confirmed case of swine flu in Sirsa in the current season.

GURDASPUR/PATHANKOT: Panic gripped the region with swine flu killing two persons - one each in Gurdaspur and Pathankot districts. The health department has issued an advisory to people asking them to report to the local civil hospitals in case of any swine flu symptoms, including high fever and unconsciousness.

According to Kahnuwan SMO Dr Kishan Kumar, Kartar Sungh, a home gaurd jawan posted at Kahnuwan police station, had died of swine flu in an Amritsar hospital on Wednesday night.

With another swine flu patient, Poonam (40) of Prem Nagar in Karnal, dying at Jaipur Golden Hospital, Delhi, the death toll in Karnal district has risen to four while 11 of the 24 suspected HINI patients have tested positive for the virus.

A senior PGIMER doctor and staff nurse tested positive for swine flu over the past week. The fact that PGI's own staff is being infected with the deadly H1N1 virus has raised question marks over the safety measures adopted by the staff during sample collection and testing of infected patients.

Cases of swine flu on the rise in Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: H1N1 Influenza A cases have been reported from various parts of the region. Since September 2012, seventeen H1N1 positive cases have been reported from Chandigarh.

Health authorities said emphasis is laid on contact tracing so that chemoprophylaxis can be provided to the high risk contacts in order to limit the infection further.

Visits to the positive patients and their contacts are being carried out in order to provide necessary chemoprophylaxis.

Instructions have been given to the positive patients and their contacts to remain quarantined for a period of one week.

24x7 hours emergency ward has been established in GMSH-16 and at CH-Manimajra with all supportive equipments and life saving medicines.

3 H1N1 cases reported

CHANDIGARH: Three new cases of H1N1 were reported in the city on Sunday. These included one case from Sector 15 and two from Punjab. A one and a half year old child from Sector 15 has also been admitted in PGI.
The total number of cases reported in the Tricity since September 2012 has reached 19.

The number of cases reported at all the three government city hospitals in the city has risen to 55.
