Dengue fever that is reported to be looming large countrywide, Health Authorities today claimed that there is an increase of dengue cases reported in the last year.

Chief Medical Officer, Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam revealing the number of patients in year 2013 as 3800 stated that the majority is represented by the school children.

Further Dr. Kariyawasam stated that the citizens who do not take the responsibility to keep the environment clean will be penalized and fined.

Dengue alert in some areas

The Ministry of Health has issued a dengue alert for the Dehiwala and Moratuwa area and for Kohuwala, Kaduwela, Kolonnawa, Angoda and Katubedda.

A statement by the Ministry of Health said that dengue in some areas is at an epidemic level and the public need to take precautions.

Operations to check for dengue mosquito breeding grounds in public places as well as schools, state institutions and other places in and around Dehiwala, Moratuwa, Kohuwala, Kaduwela, Kolonnawa, Angoda and Katubedda will be carried out tomorrow.

Schoolgirl dies of Dengue

Yesterday at 9pm while i watching News i heard this sad news.
Two children of the same family affected with dengue and one
of the died on Friday at the Kalubowila hospital while her brother is in
a serious condition and he has been transferred to the Children's Hospital,Colombo.
The victim was R.N.Sanduni 11 years old and the student of Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya Nugegoda.
According to well inform sources,oxygen had been administered to her and her parents had noticed
that there was a blockage in the tube.The staff had changed the cylinders three times and then found that
there was not sufficient Oxygen in the tank.
Finally the staff had to bring on oxygen tank from another ward,the sources said.Her three year old brother
is also in a serious condition.

Colombo City dengue cases and deaths up

The Epidemiology Unit has recorded over 1,800 dengue cases by the end of the first three weeks of January.

Sources at the Epidemiology Unit said yesterday that they had received an update of the statistics at the end of every week. The numbers would be more by the end of this week, they said. The total number of dengue cases during the month of January last year had been over 3,460, they said, adding that comparatively the numbers reported had seen a decline this year.

Sources said that there were 500 dengue cases reported from the Colombo District this year.

Chief Medical Officer of the Public Health Department, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said that the city had 225 dengue cases recorded from the beginning of January till date with four deaths reported from Wellawatte, Colombo Central and Mattakkuliya areas. Last year however, the numbers were 30 percent lower than what had been recorded within the same period this year. He said that there had been no dengue deaths reported as well during that period last year.

Children?s game to fight dengue

A game has been devised to raise children?s awareness of dengue, Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council, (CMC PHD) said yesterday.

PHD Chief, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said that a multimedia game to build awareness and training regarding the control of the mosquito borne disease had been devised with a view to taking the message to schoolchildren. The game named ?DenGone? had been created in collaboration with Union Assurance.

Describing the concept of the game Dr. Kariyawasam said that the main aim was to inform schoolchildren of the need to keep their environment free from mosquito breeding sites. The PHD would take the game to schools, he said.

Dengue highest in Colombo District

The total number of dengue patients reported from all parts of the country during the past month is 2,385 while the highest number of dengue cases (953), had been reported from the Colombo District, Epidemiology Unit sources said.

According to the sources, 346 dengue patients had been reported from the Colombo Municipal Council area while another 607 dengue patients were reported from other parts of the Colombo District. The second most affected district is Gampaha where 342 dengue cases were reported during January.

Another dengue epidemic in Colombo

Four die, including three little children, 376 victims in city last month


Colombo city is experiencing another outbreak of deadly dengue fever with four deaths ? three of them children below 5 ? and another 376 victims last month while the Colombo district recorded 1091 cases. The Colombo Municipality?s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam, told the Sunday Times this was a 30 per cent increase compared to January last year.

Last year, 757 dengue cases were reported in the Colombo district which has a large population visiting the area from the outstations. Among the areas where a high number of dengue patients were reported were Mattakkuliya, Narahenpita, Thimbirigasyaya, Kirulapone, Wellawatte, Borella, Cinnamon Gardens and Kompanna Veediya. He said two thirds of the dengue victims were below the age of 20 and, of them, a majority were children below the age of five. Three of the four deaths reported in the city were also of children below five.

Only 4,531 dengue patients have been reported from the country this year. The number of dengue deaths was 10. The dengue death rate is as low as 0.22 percent, Health Ministry Secretary Dr.Nihal Jayatilleke said.

According to Dr. Jayatilleke, the number of dengue patients reported in last year was 32,000. There were 89 dengue deaths. The dengue death rate was 0.28 percent. There were 44,461 dengue cases in 2012, which was the highest number of recorded dengue cases resulting in 181 deaths. The death rate was 0.4 percent, he said.

Dengue On The Rise

The number of dengue casualties and cases reported in the city limits has increased by ten percent compared to the last year statistics, Chief Medical Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council Dr Pradeep Kariyawasam said.
According to Dr Kariyawasam, 17 dengue caused deaths and 3,993 dengue infected cases were reported from the city limits last year.
?Last year a very high rate of dengue cases was reported within the city limits but this year it is even higher. In January there was a 20% increase compared to the previous year statistics but it declined in February.
However statistics show that the overall number in the first two months has gone up by 10% compared to the last year data. Up to now 500 cases and four deaths have been reported, and of them, three were small children,? said Dr Kariyawasam.

Four dengue deaths in two months

Parents with children under five years are advised by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), to keep their premises and compounds clean to prevent the dengue mosquito from breeding.


Chief Medical Officer, CMC, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam, speaking to Ceylon Today, said with four deaths of children below five years being reported within a span of two months, it was important that residents keep their premises very clean to protect the children from being stung by the aedes mosquito.

Due to dengue fever last Sunday ( 12 ) was admitted to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital S. . Fatima camha the 9 -year-old girl died Thursday of treatment ( 20 ) died as a politically Medical Officer of Health Dr. Yu . L. . Nacirtin said .

The new kid in town Investigations pirtaus due to flu last Sunday ( 12 ) Investigations admitted to the base hospital .

Then transferred to Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for further treatment, the treatment and died on Thursday , he died while undergoing treatment .

Pirtaus Investigations Grade 3 student at the School of Education came to learn .

In this case , this student 's home , school, etc. Environmental and Experimental Investigations are being Medical Officer of Health Dr. Yu . L. . Nacirtin added .
