There can be little debate that Sri Lanka has made startling progress in the fight against dengue. The fatality rate from dengue was around five percent in 1996 and one percent in 2009, but it is now around 15 percent [0.15% - Ro], as 67 deaths have been reported among the over 44,000 confirmed cases in 2016.

Dengue deaths top 75 this year

A total of 78 dengue deaths have been reported from all parts of the country this year. The total number of dengue cases reported from all parts of the country during this year is 49,930, Epidemiology Unit sources said.

According to the sources, the highest number of dengue patients - 15,303 was reported from the Colombo district.

Gampaha district recorded the second highest number of dengue patients, 6,202 while Kandy district recorded the third highest number of dengue patients, 3,869...

Dengue has gone up

The heavy rainfall in December and January could aggravate the spreading of diseases such as Dengue, experts say. So are the death toll cause by Dengue has gone up to 77 and 40,682 patients have been reported all around the country. Speaking Lanka News Web, regarding the matter, Health Minister RajithaSenaratne said that steps have been taken to eradicate Dengue throughout the island. Accordingly Dengue Complain Centers have been established island wide and the smoking activities are being carried out continuously. Various steps have been taken under the National Dengue Prevention Week as well. Accordingly, the expansion of the disease has been controlled, Minister Senaratne says.

The number of deaths due to dengue goes down.

Director General of Health Consultant Dr. Palitha Mahipala says the number of dengue patients has reduced considerably as compared to the previous year. He pointed out that the progress has resulted due to the positive measures taken by the health authorities.

Dr. Mahipala made these comments at a media briefing held at the Family Health Bureau today. Intensive Care Units have been set up at all major hospitals to treat the dengue patients. The government has spent more than 600 million rupees for the project. The government hospitals have the capacity to identify the status of the dengue patients in 30 minutes. 1.5 million rupees has been spent to set up the laboratory in this regard. In addition the Sri Lankan medical officers have been given special training in Thailand to treat the dengue patients.

Sri Lanka?s health sector administrators and municipal officials are entering a new year with a record of failure. Dengue cases this past year nearly doubled to 50,519 compared with 2015 when 29,777 became statistics in the dengue epidemic.

Thousands of children are among the dengue patients and the island?s largest children?s hospital admitted 70 patients every day this year.

Every 24 hours this past year, 136 Sri Lankans became dengue patients ? that is more than five every hour.

Seventy eight persons died of dengue and more than 49,000 dengue patients had been admitted to hospitals in the year 2016. A draft necessary to formulate a national policy to eradicate dengue from the island has been compiled by a committee and it has been already handed over to the Minister said Dr. Prashila Samaraweera.

The Epidemiology Unit no longer reports fatalities. Official %cfr over the past few years has decreased from 0.65% in 2010 to 0.61% in 2011 to 0.41% in 2012 to 0.28% in 2013 to 0.21% in 2014 and a preliminary 0.2% in 2015. This year a cfr of 0.17% is being reported. This would allow an estimate of between 93 and 357 fatal cases in 2016, with the official figure on the lower side of this estimate. 78 fatalities have been reported in the media
 
Due Dengue Diligence

The number of dengue cases exceeded 50,000 with 83 deaths last year, the Health Ministry statistics have revealed. According to Dr. Preshila Samaraweera, Community Physician and Consultant National Dengue Control, 51,823 dengue cases were reported in 2016 including 4,352 in December alone.

The number of dengue deaths reported in 2016 was 88 an increase of 34, as against the 54 deaths reported in 2015.
