A 3-year-old girl is the eighth person to die of Swine Flu in Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach County Health Department said today.

The child, who had an underlying illness, died after complications from H1N1.

To date, the county has seen 78 people hospitalized with the virus. Of those, 32 people have been admitted into the intensive care unit.

Authorities continue to pursue H1N1 flu as a possible reason why a La Crosse second-grader died Wednesday after collapsing at his home.

An autopsy Thursday at the Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Hastings did not determine a cause of death for State Road Elementary School student Cristian "C.J." Ehler, 7, said La Crosse County Medical Examiner John Steers.

Doug Mormann, La Crosse County Health Department director, said Ehler died of "apparent flu-like symptoms" and the autopsy revealed no obvious physical cause of death.

Results from cultures and lab tests are pending, Mormann said, and confirmation of H1N1 could take several days.

A physician saw the boy, the son of Glenda and Tim Ehler, on Wednesday for a fever and pneumonia, according to a letter Principal Dave Gluch sent to parents and staff.

Teachers notified parents of students in Ehler's State Road Elementary class and his brother Josh Ehler's fifth-grade class about the death. The La Crosse School District did not have classes Thursday or today because of a teachers' convention.

Superintendent Jerry Kember said Thursday classes will resume Monday as planned.

"We believe ... students are safe to return to school on Monday," Kember said. "We need to be careful. We believe the school is safe." The school district continues to follow county health department and Centers for Disease Control guidelines, Kember said. That includes increasing its cleaning efforts and available flu-prevention supplies for students.

The numbers of absent students dropped Wednesday to 7.9 percent, which Kember said "during the flu season is pretty normal" for La Crosse's 15 buildings.

Gluch said information is available on the State Road School Web site to help parents talk to their children about Ehler's death and understand their grief.

"He was always smiling, always saying hello and always asking, 'How are you doing, Mr. Gluch?'" Gluch said. "He was just a beautiful boy who will be missed.

"He played with everybody. He was so friendly."

State Road Elementary School is a "big, extended family," Gluch said.

"Our hearts go out to the Ehler family. We're there to support them and do what we can for them and the rest of our students and families."

If confirmed, Ehler's death would be the second in the Coulee Region related to the H1N1 virus, also referred to as swine flu. A 21-month old Cashton girl died of H1N1 flu complications Oct. 11.

As of Wednesday, the state had reported 14 deaths related to H1N1 flu since spring. Seventy hospitalizations due to H1N1 have been reported in Wisconsin since Sept. 1. The state Department of Health Services report showed 65 of 72 counties had confirmed H1N1 cases, and flu activity continued to increase across the state.

The state Department of Public Instruction reported the Omro and Elcho school districts shut down because of flu-like illness until next week. They were joined by eight other individual schools.

"Jonathon was a special little boy and he is very precious," says Tammy Baimbridge, Jonathon's mother. "He was a clown, he was always cutting up and joking with everybody."
A handful of Jonathon's classmates from Moss Bluff Middle School made an appearance at today's ceremony.
"The entire school has just been hit," says Smith. "You never thought that a person we were close to in our group would be the person that would go."
But amidst the tears and the tragedy, Jonathon's mother says there is something to learn from this tragedy.
"I have an important message from Jonathon that I want to share with the world," says Baimbridge. "It's important that everyone take prevention and get vaccinated for this H1N1 virus, because it can turn into a tragedy and a fatality."
As even in death, Baimbridge feels her son's story can help save lives.
"Please, Jon wanted to help others and save lives," says Baimbridge. "So everyone needs to consider getting vaccinated."
It is also a day to celebrate the life of a great fourteen-year old.
As his classmates say, he impacted so many in such a short period of time.
"It's a celebration, that's what a funeral is," says Smith. "It's a celebration that someone is going on to heaven. He got his reward early, that's like Jon."

Albany County adolescent death linked to H1N1

ALBANY -- An Albany County adolescent has died from complications linked to the H1N1 flu virus, the county health department said today. It is the county's first H1N1-related death.

The adolescent died from complications related to a longstanding underlying medical condition, and also had influenza-like illness before death, said the health department.

The death, "while troubling, should not be cause for alarm," said county health commissioner Dr. James Crucetti. "The H1N1 virus continues to be a predominantly mild illness and this fatality does not mean the H1N1 virus has changed to cause more severe illness."

The majority of children who have died from H1N1 influenza in the United States have had an underlying medical condition that puts them at increased risk for complications if they get the flu, as was the case with the Albany County youth, according to the ACDOH.

Most individuals who have H1N1 influenza do not have serious illness.

Last week the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that H1N1 influenza accounted for 19 pediatric deaths in the United States.

Forty eight states are currently reporting widespread influenza activity.

In New York State H1N1 influenza is widespread.

As of October 24, there have been 10 pediatric deaths in New York State due to H1N1 influenza.

LINCOLN, R.I. -- A Lincoln Middle School student who died over the weekend at Hasbro Children's Hospital had suffered from flu-like symptoms, the state health director said Monday afternoon.

Dr. David Gifford said a test is being done to see if the child had H1N1, or swine flu. Results could come as early as Tuesday.

Earlier Monday, the Lincoln schools superintendent said in a news release that the student had died at the Providence hospital, but referred a reporter's question about the cause of death and whether it was related to swine flu to the health department.

The original statement from Supt. Georgia Fortunato said, "At this time there is no additional information to share regarding the cause of death.".

He added that grief team members were made available Monday morning to provide counseling for students. The team will remain in place for the week.

The news comes after a 12-year-old Bristol girl, Victoria Sousa, died last week after being infected with the swine flu.

11-Year-Old N.M. Boy Dies From Swine Flu

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- New Mexico health officials say an 11-year old boy from Bernalillo County has died from the swine flu.

Authorities said the boy, who died Sunday, had a chronic medical condition that put him at higher risk for serious complications. He had been at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque for three weeks before his death.

Health officials say there have been 22 deaths in New Mexico this year related to the swine flu.

People with chronic health conditions are at higher risk for developing serious complications from the swine flu virus and should get vaccinated as soon as possible.

The state Department of Health has ordered 124,310 doses of nasal and injectable swine flu vaccine so far and expects to receive 1.2 million doses by the end of January.

Skyla Jamie Reposa-Alves died Saturday at Hasbro Children?s Hospital, her mother, Carla Alves, told NBC 10.

Alves said she is waiting for the results of a swine flu test on her daughter. The medical examiner has not determined her cause of death. The state Department of Health said it investigates the deaths of all children under the age of 18.

?She gave me a lot of love. She showed me lot of love because every time I do even a little thing for her, she said, ?Thank you. I love you,?? said Skyla?s grandmother, Maria Alves.

Another relative said Skyla showed flu-like symptoms for several days, and then started feeling better Thursday. But Friday, she became very sick and was admitted to Hasbro Children?s Hospital, where she died Saturday night.

?She said to her mother, ?Mother, call the rescue, take me to the hospital because I?m dying. So she kissed her mother and said, ?I love you? and that?s the last time she talked,? Maria Alves said.

Skyla?s family said while she was born with Prader-Willi Syndrome, a chromosome disorder, she did not suffer from chronic health problems.

?Little colds, sometimes her throat would bother her because her tonsils would start to swell. But besides that, she was never sick like that, never. That?s the first time,? Maria Alves said.

Grief counselors were made available to Skyla?s classmates at Lincoln Middle School on Monday. A letter was sent home to parents informing them of Skyla?s death.

In addition to the letter, the superintendent sent out an automated phone message reminding parents about the upcoming H1N1 flu vaccine clinics.

?It?s here. It?s in your backyard. It?s in your school. It?s with your kids,? said parent Victor Alves, who is not related to Skyla, and has two boys at the school.

?At first we were hesitant to get the vaccination, but now we are going to do it if means keeping our boys safe.?

Two H1N1 flu vaccine clinics, one at Northern Lincoln Elementary School, the other at Northern Early Learning Center are scheduled for Tuesday. The clinic at Lincoln Middle School is scheduled for Dec. 14.

Authorities said last week a 12-year-old Bristol girl who died tested positive for swine flu.

Calling hours for Skyla Jamie Reposa-Alves will be Thursday at Bellows-Falso Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony?s Church in Pawtucket.

In lieu of flowers, Skyla?s family is asking donations be made to either the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association of New England, the Providence Animal Rescue League or the Hasbro Children?s Hospital ICU.

HOUSTON - A baby boy is one of two more Houston residents who have died from swine flu, according to the city's Website.

On Monday, Houstonflu.org stated that a male between the ages of 25 and 49 died on Sept. 26 and a baby boy between the ages of 6 and 11 months months died Oct. 4.

The latest deaths have increased the city of Houston's death toll to 10 and brought the Houston area toll up to 22.

The 22 includes residents of Harris County; Fort Bend County; Galveston County; and Brazoria County and residents from inside the Houston city limits.

Nationwide, there have been more than 1,000 H1N1 deaths.

Amherst High student dies after 'brief illness'

An Amherst High School student died Sunday morning following "a brief illness," Amherst Superintendent Laura K. Chabe said today.

The girl has been identified at Chelsea Oliver, 15.
However, both Chabe and a spokesman for the Erie County Health Department said they are prohibited by federal privacy laws from discussing specifics of the illness, or from identifying the student.

School officials conferred with Health Department representatives after the death to make sure they had been and were continuing to follow proper procedures to limit the spread of both seasonal and H1N1 flu. It was determined that the procedures are and were proper, Chabe said.

On Sunday evening, Chabe sent automated phone calls to about about 3,000 parents, faculty and staff in the school district.

"We are very sad to inform you that following a brief illness one of our high school students passed away Sunday morning," Chabe said in the phone call. "It's a very sad day in our district and community, and our condolences go out to the family and friends of our student."

She also said school officials have been in touch with Health Department officials, "and have been assured that it is safe for your children to be in school."

Chabe this morning described the mood of the district as "very solemn, as you would imagine." She said she had not yet received a report on attendance today at the high school, which is located at 4301 Main Street.

Asked about the cause of death, Chabe replied: "We don't know the cause of death. I don't know if we ever will."

Even if the the cause of death were known, federal privacy rules would prevent her from revealing those and other details, Chabe said.
The Health Department also is bound by those privacy rules, said Kevin

Montgomery, a spokesman for the Erie County Health Department.

"We can only tell people what we usually tell them" about taking precautions to prevent the spread of the flu, Montgomery said.

In more general terms, 15 school districts in Erie County last week reported increases in flu-like illnesses among students, nine reported decreases and five said they were holding steady, Montgomery said.

School districts hit hard by the flu are reporting absenteeism rates of more than 20 percent, Montgomery said.

When the flu is prevalent in a particular school, it generally spikes for about a week before receding, he added.

Two Buffalo students died of the H1N1 flu virus last June.

Nationally, there were 292 laboratory-confirmed H1N1 deaths between August 2009 and Oct. 10, 2009, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A Littlestown kindergarten student died Saturday of complications from swine flu, after a three-week battle with the disease at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, according to a friend of the child's mother.

It is the first confirmed H1N1-related death in Adams County.

Kyree Gamble, a 5-year-old student at Rolling Acres Elementary School in Littlestown, was taken by his mother, Marci Place, to Gettysburg Hospital on Oct. 11 with a fever, said Megan Shreve, executive director of South Central Community Action Programs Inc., where Place is employed.

Shreve said Kyree was moved to Hershey the same day and was tested for swine flu soon after. Within a week, a diagnosis of H1N1 was confirmed, she said.

After going into respiratory arrest during his first night in the hospital, Kyree was connected to a heart-lung machine, which doctors hoped would help heal his flu-damaged lungs, Shreve said. As late as this past Friday, Kyree seemed to be improving, she said.

But after several weeks on the machine - which also thins the blood - Kyree died Saturday from pneumonia and the hemorrhaging in his lungs, Shreve said.

According to Shreve, Kyree attended school at Rolling Acres through the Friday before his hospitalization.

Littlestown Area School District Superintendent Donald Wills said Monday afternoon the district is making grief counselors available to any students who might need them.

Shreve described Kyree as a "lovely little guy," who
loved to organize things and help others.
She said Place's co-workers are seeking donations to help with funeral costs, and contributions can be sent to SCAAP at 153 N. Stratton St., Gettysburg, with the notation "Marci."

Please - someone - Mr. President, Gates Foundation, someone....fund Gordon Bernard at Vanderbilt based on the results of this study that showed hospitalized influenza patients that were given statins had a 66% decreased risk of dying (press reports say 54%).

"We've never seen this kind of thing happen with so many patients with severe symptom." says Dr. Bernard.

In addition, statins could be effective against many diseases: bacteremina, pneumonia, sepsis, bacterial infection, vascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes based in this study.


Please. Take a chance and fund Dr. Bernard's study. If statins can reduce the risk of dying from influenza isn't this a worthwhile expenditure of money in a pandemic?

What will be the social and political ramifications if this is an effective treatment for pandemic and it was not explored?

The family of a Pembroke Intermediate School student has confirmed to News 10NBC that their son, Jared Peters, died from a confirmed case of H1N1 influenza.

Peters was 10 years old and a fifth grade at the school. He died in late October. His family did not want to speak with us today on camera.
Gary Mix, Superintendent of the Pembroke schools released a statement today saying the school district has seen a minimum increase in their absence rate. Over the last 15 days, 6.1% of students were absent.

Interim Director of the Genesee County Health Department Randolph Garney says the county received the test results late Monday afternoon from the state health lab.

Garney says the spread of H1N1 (swine flu) is on the rise among children in Genesee County. "We've seen in the last couple of weeks an increase in absenteeism in schools," said Garney. "In one school district it was 20% on one particular day when normally for that period 4% absenteeism occurs."

Garney said there will be a clinic for H1N1 vaccinations Thursday from 2-4pm at the health department at County Office Building #2 in Batavia.

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Iowa Department of Public Health is reporting the first death of a child linked to H1N1.

They say the child was from eastern Iowa, died in October and had "factors that increased the risk of complications from H1N1."

IDPH Medical Director, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk says, "Surveillance is showing a steady increase in pediatric illness and hospitalizations. This death is a somber reminder of the importance of protecting Iowa's children from this flu."

The Centers for Disease Control says all children, especially those 5 years old and younger and those with chronic medical conditions, have an increased risk for complications and death from the flu.

They say even those kids that are otherwise healthy can have complications with severe or fatal outcomes after an influenza infection.

Symptoms of H1N1 are similar to the seasonal flu and include: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. A significant number of people with H1N1 have also reported diarrhea and vomiting.

Remember, if your child is sick, it is important they drink plenty of fluids and get lots of rest.

Also remember, children under the age of 18 should not take aspirin when they have the flu.


In children, warning signs indicating the need for urgent medical attention include:

• Fast breathing or trouble breathing
• Bluish or gray skin color
• Not drinking enough fluids
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• Not waking up or not interacting with people and things around them
• Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
• Flu-like symptoms improve, but then return with fever and worse cough

All children greater than 6 months of age and their caregivers, and those living with children less than six months of age should receive seasonal influenza vaccine and be among the priority target group for the 2009 H1N1 vaccine.
