Kolkata, July 9 (IANS) Two children have tested positive for swine flu in West Bengal, a health official said Friday.

The children aged between 5 and 7 were admitted to the Beliaghata Infectious Disease Hospital.

'The two children with swine flu symptoms came to the government hospital, where samples of their throat swab were collected and sent for test. The report revealed that they tested swine flu positive,' a medical official said.

'They have been admitted in the Beliaghata Infectious Disease Hospital,' Anirudha Kar, director health services, West Bengal, told IANS.

Kolkata, Jul 10 (PTI) Four swine flu cases have been reported in the city since Thursday and a child is among the victims.

West Bengal Health Minister Suryakanta Mishra told PTI today that all the affected by swine flu were admitted to state-run Infectious Diseases Hospital in the city yesterday after their swabs tested positive.

The victims have been quarantined and 'They are kept under watch,' the minister said.

Asked about steps taken by the authorities to prevent the spead of swine flu, Mishra said "we are taking measures as per the international protocol."

"All hospitals in the city and districts have been asked to adopt preventive measures and open quarantine ward for admission of swine flu patients," officials said.

City Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, however, said a nine year-old was admitted with swine flu from Tiljala area. "We have received information that the child is doing well".

West Bengal recorded a fresh case of swine flu Saturday as a five-year-old child tested positive for the contagious disease.

'He is from Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district. He has been admitted to Beliaghata Infectious Disease Hospital,' said Asit Biswas, the state's nodal officer for swine fu.

On Friday, two children, aged between five and seven, tested positive for swine flu.

The West Bengal health department has virtually sounded a red alert across the state as swine flu cases are increasing. The virus struck its first VIP victim, Nandagopal Bhattacharya, minister for water resources. The H1N1 virus appears to have taken an endemic character in the state.

Sources in the health department were concerned with the pattern of swine flu spread this year. What is causing concerns is that the symptoms for the flu are similar to those of common seasonal influenza. So far, 12 people have been diagnosed with swine flu virus. As many as 11 do not have any history of exposure to any of the swine flu- hit states in India or abroad. Condition of one of the victims is critical.
The Minister Bhattacharya was admitted to a private hospital a few days back and was later found to have been affected by the virus. Bhattacharya had no record of travelling to swine flu affected areas or meeting anybody from those areas. Dr Ashit Kumar Biswas, nodal officer in charge of swine flu in West Bengal has asked people to consult local doctors once they have any kind of flu with high fever, cough, cold and respiratory distress. He has advised affected people to take hospital services.

Experts on tropical diseases are concerned about the change in the genetic behaviour of the H1N1 virus.

KOLKATA: Two more tested positive for swine flu in Kolkata on Saturday, taking the total number of affected to 14.

While six persons have already been discharged, the others are under treatment at ID Hospital in Beliaghata and in two private hospitals in the city.

The latest H1N1 victims were identified as a woman in her thirties and a 32-year-old man. While the former hails from Batanagar and is believed to be associated with ID Hospital, the latter is a resident of Salt Lake. Health officials, however, reiterated that the number of cases was still low and there was no reason to panic or initiate emergency measures to tackle the situation.

"We are keeping an eye on the situation. As of now, additional screening centres are not necessary. The number of collected samples has not been abnormally high either," said Asit Biswas, nodal officer for swine flu. Two private hospitals Apollo Gleneagles and Woodlands Hospital have set up isolation wards. State minister Nandagopal Bhattacharya is admitted to Woodlands with swine flu.

Experts said there was no reason to panic yet. "We must wait and watch for some more time. The flow of patients has been steady but not as frequent as in 2009," said Tomonash Bhattacharya, tropical medicine expert.

Unlike last year, the virus is suspected to have generated from within the community. It might have mutated and hit when the weather conditions turned favourable. Though it is extremely contagious, swine flu has a low mortality rate. Less than five in a thousand patients die of H1N1.

A four-year-old boy was admitted to hospital here Monday after he tested positive for swine flu, said a medical officer.

With this, the number of confirmed cases of the flu in the state this year has shot up to 15 this year.

'Today (Monday) a boy has been admitted to hospital after being tested positive for swine flu,' said Asit Biswas, the nodal officer for swine flu.

In 2009, 135 people were affected by swine flu in the state.

The number of confirmed cases of swine flu in West Bengal this year has risen to 17, a health official said Tuesday.

'Till late Monday three people were admitted in hospital after testing positive for swine flu. With this, the total number of confirmed cases of HIN1 has gone up to 17,' said a press statement issued by the state health department.


In 2009, a total of 135 people were affected by swine flu in the state.

Kolkata, July 23 (IANS) Five more people tested positive for swine flu in West Bengal Friday, taking the number of confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) to 26(36) in the state this year, the health department said.
“Five confirmed cases of swine flu were reported today (Friday). The cumulative confirmed cases are 36 during the year 2010,” the department said in a statement.

Sixteen people are now in hospitals. Two of them are critical, it added.

Three footballers from Sikkim, who came to the city to take part in the Santosh Trophy, are down with swine flu. They were admitted to the Beliaghata Infectious Diseases Hospital on Saturday. The Indian Football Association is yet to hit the panic button, though six new cases, including the three
footballers, were reported on Saturday. That took the toll to 42 in Bengal since the first case was reported on July 9.

Sikkim's Sagar Rai, Bikash Jairy and Sanjay Chhetri arrived here on July 19. The three, along with teammate and East Bengal midfielder Sanju Pradhan, were admitted to a private hospital on Thursday with fever. Pradhan did not test positive for the H1N1 virus and will be released on Monday, the team manager said. Rai, Jairy and Chhetri are quarantined.

19 fresh cases of Swine flu in Bengal

With 19 fresh positive cases of Swine flu reported in West Bengal since Sunday, the total number of those affected from the influenza rose to 61. State health department sources said an elderly person, undergoing chemotherapy treatment for multiple myeloma, died of H1N1 infection at a private
hospital on July 20.

Swine flu cases were on the rise due to the onset of monsoon, Nodal officer (for swine flu), Asit Biswas, said.

He said the affected were receiving treatment at state-run hospitals and in private hospitals.

It had been decided to identify areas already affected by the swine flu infection, the health department sources said. Measures have been taken there by the department to prevent spread of the disease.

KOLKATA: Twelve new patients tested positive to H1N1 on Tuesday. Among those suspected to be affected are three male nursing staffers of a private hospital who could have got infected by a swine flu patient being treated at the hospital.

Sheikh Naushad (20) of Metiabruz was admitted to the hospital about a week ago with respiratory trouble and fever. Later, his throat swab samples tested positive to swine flu. The three male nursing staffers were looking after Naushad.

Hospital sources said Naushad, whose condition had become critical, is now improving. He is off ventilation support. Even as the patient's condition is improving, some hospital staffers are known to be suffering from fever. The hospital has sent 15 throat swab samples for tests at the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED). This kept some other employees away from work on Tuesday.

"It could be that they are just suffering from fever. The test at NICED will confirm the H1N1 status of the samples. All the infected patients are being kept in an isolated ward. We are taking all other precautionary measures. We will hold a meeting with the employees on Wednesday," said a senior administrative official of the hospital.

"Several people from the Metiabruz and Kidderpore area work at the hospital as non-medical staff. They are panicky and some stayed away from work. We will organise awareness campaigns in these localities," said Youth Trinamool Congress leader Babloo Karim, who is from the locality.

Though the government has started a programme in government hospitals for vaccination of doctors and other health workers, such projects have not been taken up in private hospitals. The total number of swine flu patients this July has risen to 73. Currently, 27 patients are undergoing treatment.

"The condition of four patients are critical three are getting treated at private hospitals while one is admitted to the ID Hospital at Beliaghata," said state swine flu nodal officer Dr Asit Biswas.

Kolkata, July 28 (PTI) One more person died of swine flu here today taking the toll to two in West Bengal, while nine fresh cases have been reported.The victim, a 61-year-old woman, was admitted to the B M Birla Heart Research Centre here on July 26 with multiple health problems, hospital sources said, adding the infection was detected on the same day.Earlier on July 20, an elderly person, undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, died of the disease at a private hospital.Nine more confirmed cases of swine flu were reported in in the state during the day, a press released issued by Health Department said.There were 26 other patients in hospital, of whom four were in a critical condition, it added.The affected were being treated at state and private hospitals.The Department has decided to identify and disinfect areas affected by the disease to prevent its spread.Stating that the situation was being monitored daily, the release said that the cumulative confirmed cases of re-assorted Influenza A (H1N1) were 82 during the year.The swine flu cases were on the rise due to the onset of monsoon, it added.

Schools on high alert


KOLKATA: The rising number of swine flu cases in the city has put schools on high alert. This is because scores of schoolchildren and teachers have been down with viral fever over the last 10 days and the numbers are increasing by the day. Schools have started talking to doctors, and are taking several initiatives such as fumigating campuses and creating general awareness.

School principals have been flooded with letters from parents seeking leave for their wards as they are down with flu. Principals are taking such prayers seriously. Most schools are calling up parents of sick children to ensure that they have consulted a medical practitioner and, if necessary, their throat swabs have been sent for test. Also, parents are advised not to send their children back till the doctor gives a clean chit that the virus is under control.

During the morning assembly, most schools are addressing children on the dos and don'ts of swine flu. A regular check is then being carried out to see if kids who have fever, cough and cold are still coming to school. "The idea is not to spread panic, but to ensure that the flu, even if it is not of the H1N1 category, does not spread fast. With so many children and teachers down with flu, we can only conclude that it's spreading from school. So we are trying to keep affected kids away as a preventive measure," said Meena Kak, principal of Lakshmipat Singhania Academy.

La Martiniere for Boys is shutting its nursery section for three days from Friday for thorough fumigation. This will happen gradually in other sections as well. "Over the next 48 hours, we will finalise how we are to go about this and we are involving the school doctor and nurse," said principal Sunirmal Chakravarthy.

Paediatrician Abhijit Sarkar stressed the fact that there is no need to panic if the child is otherwise healthy. He said two vaccines are available now, which can act as preventives and many doctors have started prescribing these for babies. "One is a nasal spray vaccine, while the other is an injectable one. Both are quite effective against swine flu. However, these have to be repeated once annually," he advised.
