KMC roped in to tackle swine flu menace

KOLKATA: The state health department has decided to rope in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) as the nodal agency for distribution of medicines to prevent the growing menace of swine flu.

At a meeting held between the top brass of the state health department and senior officials of the KMC health department at Swashtha Bhawan in Salt Lake on Wednesday, it was decided that the state health department would hand over preventive swine flu medicines to the KMC health department, which in turn would distribute these among the doctors and health workers of the private hospitals. The authorities of Infectious Disease (ID) Hospital will then take charge of supplying medicines to other government hospitals where swine flu patients are being treated. These hospitals include RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata.

The state government also plans to arrange a swine flu vaccination programme through the KMC health department for the doctors, nursing and paramedical staff of the private hospitals. The experts at the meeting recommended a single dose of Tamiflu for 10 days for those who have come in close contact of any swine flu patient.

"Those who have come 6 feet close to any patient suffering from swine flu need to take Tamiflu for 10 days as a preventive measure. Doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff need vaccination to prevent contamination of the disease," said chief municipal health official (KMC) Debdwaipayan Chatterjee. "Our health officials will visit all major private hospitals and distribute Tamiflu for the doctors and other health workers. Once it is done, we may need to take up the vaccination programme," said mayor-in-council member overseeing the KMC health department, Atin De.

This apart, the state health department will organise a training programme at the KMC headquarters within a week to train the doctors of government hospitals and private hospitals. "This apart, we have asked the executive health officials of all 15 boroughs to keep a close tab on the patients coming to the KMC clinics with symptoms of swine flu. Any suspected patients will be referred to the ID Hospital," the MMiC said on Wednesday.

Kolkata, July 29 (IANS) West Bengal recorded its third swine flu death this year with a 66-year-old man succumbing to the Influenza A HINI virus in a private hospital, health officials said Thursday.
Meanwhile, nine more people tested positive for the flu, taking the number of cases in the state this year to 91.

?A 66-year-old man was admitted to the Apollo Hospital with severe hypotension and metabolic acidosis on July 28 and died the same day. His throat swab reported confirmed for Influenza A HIN1 on July 29 (Thursday),? the department said in a statement. A 61-year-old woman died Wednesday at a private hospital.

?Nine confirmed cases of swine flu were reported today (Thursday). The total confirmed cases now stands at 91,? the statement added.

Thirty-eight people are admitted to various hospitals, and two of them are critical, it added.

Earlier, a 58-year-old man died of swine flu.

In 2009, a total of 135 people were affected by swine flu in the state. However, there were no casualties.

Kolkata, July 30 (IANS) Two more people tested positive for swine flu in West Bengal Friday, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 93 this year, the health department said.

?Two confirmed cases of swine flu were reported today (Friday). The total confirmed cases of H1N1 infection are now 93. The total deaths are three during 2010,? the department said in a statement.

A total 29 people are admitted to hospitals due to swine flu and two of them are critical, the department said.

Kolkata, Aug 2 (PTI) Eight new cases of swine flu, which has claimed three lives in West Bengal, were registered today as the total number of those affected by the deadly virus mounted to 102.

The condition of two persons was critical, a health department bulletin said.

Claiming that the situation was not alarming though it was yet to be brought under control, health officials said that state and private hospitals and clinics have been asked to open quarantine wards for swine flu victims.

"We are monitoring the situation closely and have taken adequate steps," the bulletin said.

Eight people tested positive for swine flu in West Bengal Monday, taking the number of confirmed cases of the contagious disease to 102 in the state this year, the health department said.

The department said in a release that 12 people are now admitted in hospital, with two of them in critical condition.

Three people died last month of the disease, becoming the first three victims of the disease in West Bengal.

The swine flu death toll in West Bengal rose to four with a teenager dying due to the Influenza A HINI infection, while two more people tested positive for the disease, an official said Tuesday.

A 13-year-old boy died Monday night at a private hospital where he was admitted with multi-organ disorder.

'His throat swab report confirmed Influenza A HIN1 July 28. He died last (Monday) night,' Asit Biswas, the nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.

Two more people, meanwhile, tested positive for the flu, taking the total number of cases in the state this year to 104, a state health department official said.

'Two confirmed cases of swine flu were reported today (Tuesday). The total confirmed cases of H1N1 infection is now 104 in the state,' a statement said.

Three people died of swine flu last month in West Bengal.

In 2009, a total of 135 people were affected by swine flu in the state but there were no casualties.

Five more people tested positive for swine flu in West Bengal on Wednesday taking the number of confirmed cases of the contagious disease to 109 in the state this year, the health department said. "Five confirmed cases of swine flu were reported on Wednesday. The total confirmed cases of H1N1
infection is now 109 in the state," the department said in a release.

Twelve people are now in hospitals, with one of them critical, it said.

Four persons have already died of swine flu this year in the state.

In 2009, a total of 135 people were affected by swine flu in the state. However, there were no casualties.
