When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dallas?

Think the same thing, very surprised.

Very surprised that we have not seen another case.

Hopefully we don't see any but if anything it seems to me that Dallas is very quiet both in secondary infections and news reporting.

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dalas

Not to get all tinfoil-hatted, but given the madness sparked by the initial case, how possible is it that news of any secondary cases would be sequestered? Is that even an option in this day & age?

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dalas

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dalas

It is quite surprising, given the major exposures. However, I really don't imagine it would be possible to keep it under wraps.

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dallas?

Given sufficient intimidation and potential for prosecution or law suits against anyone who releases private medical information, particularly if it involves a minor, I believe information will be tightly controlled. Therefore, I do believe that symptomatic cases could be isolated without being reported and even testing results kept confidential. They can always fall back on HIPPA as the reason. I agree with Graupel that they wouldn't be able to keep the lid on it for long, but I think they could delay the news breaking by at least a week.

If there are no symptomatic cases at this point, I would think the CDC and Dallas County would be shouting it from the rooftops. After all, if his fiance and primary caregiver isn't showing symptoms, that would validate the mantra that this is not very contagious and that one must be heavily exposed to bodily fluids to become infected.

I don't know, my gut tells me that something just isn't right. On the other hand, my gut is wrong more that it is right. We can only keep praying that we've seen the end of it in Dallas.

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dallas?

There are a couple things I have not been able to wrap my head around. Why has it not yet spread to other neighboring countries? And I don't understand why the fear. We don't have the cultural practice here for burial that has been so devastating in WA. But then how did the nurse in Spain get it. She was not a direct care giver. I'm baffled.

Agree on the rooftops.

We've had few updates and no details on the two physicans/hcw treated recently in US at Emory and NIH. Apparently if you want your info kept confidential it can be at least for a while.

Here's hoping there are no more cases.

That's an interesting thought. I don't think officials would lie outright about possible cases, but they may not make an announcement without a positive test, which could take a while.

The last report of "no symptoms" I could find was from Thursday:

http://wtvr.com/2014/10/09/deputy-hospitalized-with-possible-ebola-symptoms/

?In a situation with no fever and no contact, there is no risk,? [Texas Department of State Health Services spokesman] Van Deusen said in a written statement.

?We understand that anyone near the Dallas response will be very concerned about any health issues they experience, and we want them to report those issues so we can check them out quickly,? Van Deusen said. ?We?re closely tracking those whose contact put them at risk of potential infection, and none of those people have reported any symptoms of Ebola.?

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dallas?

Yes, this is strange though I'm glad there are no secondary cases. I'm wondering now if he really had ebola. Malaria symptoms are very similar to the ebola symptoms Mr. Duncan had. What if he died because he needed anti-malarial drugs and not anti-virals?

He was cremated quickly without an autopsy, so we will never know.

And now we have heard the unfortunate news that a HCW has been infected, it would seem that (if the reported timeline is accurate) you were right about this.

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dallas?

So, it looks like while the CDC and Department of Health aren't exactly withholding information, they are playing things close to the vest.

They are not releasing information until they have confirmation (if they can help it) it seems. So my question now becomes is it possible not to report if a person has tested positive for Ebola if they specifically request the information be withheld?

Like, say one of Mr. Duncan's family members becomes symptomatic, and tests positive. If they request specifically that their condition not be released (and fall back on HIPPA to back that). What does the CDC/Dept of Health do? Can they say "Well, someone is positive but we cant tell you who"? Or would that even be enough information to breach the HIPPA regulations.

Do any of our Medical Professionals know?

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dallas?

It would leak somewhere. With around 40 attendants someone would tell someone and then the world would know.

It doesn't have to "leak" - as in this new case, the minute they start notifying contacts and possible contacts, names will be out in the public domain. PubLic health laws trump HIPPA.

I feel so sorry for this lady, her family, her pet, etc. and hope people will express compassion rather than rejection, etc. Their request for privacy can probably be partly honored and maybe they won't become the object of a media circus.

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dallas?

The infection of the HCW couldn't be hidden, however, the Troh family could (and are) invoking HIPAA and they have (quote from her spokesperson/pastor) sought legal advice and are demanding privacy.

My source on this: local news interviews in Dallas.

Think about it: They were not infected when they were taken to the undisclosed location, therefore there is no public health interest in a release.

Not releasing any information on them is also in the best interests of those who have so judiciously been downplaying the danger.

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dallas?

If one of them started to show symptoms they would need to be hospitalized and isolated. It would be difficult to keep that quite.

Re: When will we see secondary Ebola transmissions in Dallas?

Not being infected, however, does not mean quarantine, etc. laws don't apply.

(2) For purposes of this subsection, the term ?qualifying stage?, with respect to a communicable disease, means that such disease?

(A) is in a communicable stage; or

(B) is in a precommunicable stage, if the disease would be likely to cause a public health emergency if transmitted to other individuals.

Unfortunately we're delving into tinfoil areas here, but Presbyterian Dallas has some very serious "exposure", re: Mr Duncan.

We've seen quite an unbelievable show here, involving accusations of racism, veiled references to genocide, accusations that Mr. Duncan received substandard treatment due to his race. Ms. Troh's spokesperson came right out and said that he was deprived of ZMAPP and a transfusion because of his race. Mr Jesse Jackson has thrown his influence behind all of this.

I realize how this sounds, and I apologize in advance, but...if the Troh family has asked for private treatment, or even a field hospital, I think they will get what they ask. Any workers who speak would have serious HIPAA exposure.

Yes, this is weird. It's all weird.
