In some places, including the US in the 1800's pigs were used as garbage disposals and allowed to forage loose on city streets. Pigs have the reputation in the US of eating the odd snake that slithers into their pen or pasture, I don't know if they do this in Egypt. Cats and dogs assisted in vermin control for rats and mice. I'm wondering if with the increase in the culling of pigs, cats and dogs there will be an increase in vermin such as rats and the poisonous snakes which prey on them in Egypt. It will also be interesting to see, if this does happen, if crops and grain stores are effected by vermin predation and there is an increase in flea/rodent borne diseases and snake bites to humans.

I seem to remember reading about an effort in China years ago to kill off wild birds to assist with disease control and limit their predation on crops. The result was an expoltion in insect populations that significantly hurt crops, etc.

Stray cats and dogs are a major issue here, (within Egypt)that said all to often the practice of trying to remove,controlling or eliminating the wild population is a complete failure.

As its often only done when somebody important lives in the area and demands action.

I just passed and area on the outskirts of major city and counted the dogs laying in the rubbish piles,which were clearly dumped by somebody doing construction on buildings based on the type of waste visible and its against the local laws to dump anything in this area. the dogs numbered over twenty five,with all looking healthy, not thin or bad hair coats. and the stretch of road was about four hundred yards long.

In front of my home we have a public garden which covers and area about the size of two football fields. just over six months ago all the wild dogs (five) which lived in the garden, where killed by the use of a poison.

The body's where moved by a person, to a vacant lot about five hundred yards away and just left to decay.

A lone new female dog moved in within a couple of days.breed birthed and raised a litter of three.about four days ago she gave birth to another litter of pups.

The garden has really nice shade trees and a water source. which provides irrigation for the foliage and shrubs, and must be manually turned on and off.all to often the water flows for a day and forms small ponds which can take a week to dry out completely.during the drying period all the local animals and birds drink from these newly formed ponds. which are being feed by treated waste water.These same gardens are often used around certain feast times to graze smaller livestock animals which are awaiting delivery to a customer for butchering.

The first time my children and i visited this garden we found the remains of a sheep which had most likely died there while grazing.

Why to blame and cruely kill the animals in pain, when exists an well fited primary carrier who disseminate the illness everywhere by traveling and grouping - the humans.

Probably, the human or domestic breeded vector would be the one who would mix the next pandemic wave, not the stray wild one ...

كشف الدكتور حامد سماحة رئيس الهيئة العامة للخدمات البيطرية، أن مصر لا تمتلك أية وسائل لمكافحة الفئران والقطط والكلاب منذ ما يقرب من عام، وهى الحيوانات والقوارض التى أصبحت تشكل خطرا فى نقل مرض الطاعون إلى المواطنين.

وقال سماحة فى تصريحات خاصة لليوم السابع أن هيئة الخدمات البيطرية لا تملك "سم الاستراكدين" منذ شهر يناير الماضى، بعد أن تم رفض إحدى الشحنات المستوردة من الخارج لعدم مطابقتها للمواصفات القياسية، كما أن هناك قلقا من هجوم منظمات الرفق بالحيوان على مصر إذا ما قمنا بإعدام وقتل هذه الحيوانات، وسيتكرر سيناريو هجوم إعدام الخنازير.

ولفت سماحه إلى أن الهيئة ستعلن عن مناقصة خلال الأيام المقبلة لشراء سم مكافحة الكلاب الضالة. وقال سماحة إن ظاهرة انتشار القطط والكلاب الضالة فى الشوارع جاءت نتيجة لهجرتها مناطق تربية الخنازير، بعد أن تم التخلص منها، مشيرا إلى أنها كانت تعتمد فى غذائها على القمامة وبعد التخلص من الخنازير انتشرت هذه الحيوانات الضالة فى شوارع القاهرة الكبرى.

حذر عدد من خبراء الطب البيطرى من انتشار الفئران والقطط والكلاب الضالة فى شوارع القاهرة، لخطورتها فى نقل مرض الطاعون إلى الإنسان. وقال البيطريون إن هذه الحيوانات أصبحت منتشرة بشكل عشوائى فى الشوارع القريبة من مناطق كانت مقرا لتربية الخنازير، دون وجود أية وسائل للتخلص منها.

وشكت مديريات الطب البيطرى ومديريات الصحة بالمحافظات من عدم وجود مادة "الإستركدين" المستخدمة فى قتل هذه الحيوانات وهو ما جعلها ظاهرة مخيفة، خاصة فى الأحياء والمناطق التى اشتهرت فى السابق بتربية الخنازير.

الدكتور رأفت عبد الله وكيل مديرية الصحة بحلوان قال لليوم السابع إن محافظة حلوان لا تملك السم المستخدم فى قتل الكلاب الضالة والقطط والفئران والعرس، وذلك منذ ما يزيد على عام، مشيرا إلى أن السموم المستخدمة لهذا الغرض يتم استيرادها من الصين والهند، لافتا إلى أنه تم استيراد كمية لم تكن مطابقة للمواصفات، وتم رفضها، وإلى الآن لم يتم استيراد كميات بديلة.

ويؤكد الدكتور محمود شعراوى مدير مديرية الطب البيطرى بمحافظه 6 أكتوبر، أن المحافظة تتعرض لهجوم من الكلاب الضالة بسبب قربها من الصحراء، لافتا إلى أن نقص السم على مستوى الجمهورية لم يؤثر تأثيرا كبيرا لوجود كميات من المخزون فى جهاز
6 أكتوبر، موضحا أن مجلس أمناء 6 أكتوبر يخصص مبالغ مالية لذلك الغرض، ويجرى عمل مناقصة لاستيراد السم بعد الحصول على موافقة هيئه الخدمات البيطرية ووزارة الزراعة ويتم الاستيراد من أوروبا.

وأوضح شعراوى أن القانون 14 حدد وسيلتين للتخلص من الكلاب الضالة وهى إطلاق النار والسم، مشيرا إلى أن الوسيلة الأولى تجد اعتراضا دوليا ومحليا من جمعيات حقوق الإنسان، لذلك فإن التخلص يتم عن طريق السم والذى تحاول المحافظة توفيره من مواردها.

هيئة الخدمات البيطرية، وحسبما يؤكد الدكتور يوسف ممدوح مدير الإدراة المركزية للحجر البيطرى، لا يوجد لديها سم لقتل هذه الحيوانات منذ فترة طويلة، بعد أن استوردت كميات من السموم من بلدان مختلفة، وبعد فحصها معمليا تبين أنها غير مطابقة للمواصفات القياسية، وتم إعادة تصديرها إلى بلد المنشأ.

وقال ممدوح إن الهيئة ستجرى مناقصة لشراء كميات أخرى من السموم "الإستركدين" للقضاء على القطط والكلاب الضالة المنتشرة فى شوارع القاهرة الكبرى.

الدكتور محمد سيف أستاذ الطب البيطرى بجامعة بنى سويف، يؤكد أن القطط والفئران والكلاب الضالة وسيلة ممتازة لنقل مرض الطاعون، مشيرا إلى أن الفئران هى الحامل الأول للمرض، وتتغذى عليها القطط والكلاب أحيانا، ومن خلالها تصاب هذه الحيوانات، وبالتالى ينتقل المرض إلى الإنسان.

وطالب سيف بضرورة التخلص من هذه الحيوانات لأن مصر تعتبر بيئة مناسبة لانتقال الأمراض بسهولة، خاصة مع انتشار أكوام القمامة فى العديد من المناطق العشوائية.
الأمر أصبح يثير الذعر والرعب لدى العديد من المناطق والأحياء الراقية والعشوائية، خاصة القريبة من مناطق تربية الخنازير، ومنها حى مدينه نصر، فتؤكد صفاء حامد وكيل المجلس الشعبى أنها أصبحت حبيسة منزلها بسبب وجود عشرات من الكلاب أسفل منزلها، بل امتد الأمر لمطاردة الكلاب لها داخل جراح السيارات. Having witnessing many times how cruel, painfull and inhumane are the animal dyings from venomous poisons, such actions are to blame.

The stray problem is mainly a product of lack of other preventive proliferations measures, as wroted before.
