A press release issued this Wednesday, November 5th, by the City confirms suspicions of avian influenza at Friedel Park,
following the death of a peacock a few days ago. The diagnosis having been established by the veterinary services of the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations (DDPP), the City of Illkirch-Graffenstaden, in conjunction with health authorities, has implemented the prescribed emergency measures: the immediate closure of the animal park to the public and the suspension of all non-essential entry, the reinforcement of biosecurity measures (disinfection of tools, vehicles and equipment), and the provision of specific equipment for staff working on the site.
Preventive felling operation
For its part, the DDPP (Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations) is preparing a prefectural order for the preventive culling of all domestic birds in the park—chickens, roosters, ducks, peacocks—as well as any wild birds that may be captured near the pond. This operation, supervised by a designated veterinarian, was scheduled to begin as early as Wednesday or Thursday morning. The animals in question will be taken to the approved rendering service.
“I fully understand the sadness and emotion that this situation is causing among residents and visitors who are attached to Friedel Park. These measures, although difficult, are essential to protect other farms in the area and prevent any spread of the virus. Health safety and animal welfare remain our absolute priority,” reacted Mayor Thibaud Philipps .
Following this outbreak of avian influenza, "no reintroduction of birds can be considered for an estimated six months, according to the health guidelines that will be issued by the state authorities," the City stated. In September 2024, a case of bluetongue disease in a cow at the park led to its temporary closure.
The virus can survive in animal droppings and stagnant water.
In the Haut-Rhin, a first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed on November 4 in a wild duck found dead at the Saint-Pierre pond in Bollwiller, the prefecture indicates.
“The virus, highly contagious and pathogenic to birds, can survive for several days in droppings and contaminated stagnant water,” she reminds us. “This confirmed case adds to an already heightened national risk level, which has been raised from ‘moderate’ to ‘high’ since October 22, 2025.” According to the prefectural press release, “this risk could continue until the end of November. This period coincides with the end of the migratory journeys of wildlife, including the common crane, which is particularly affected.”
