Health in Egypt: new deaths from bird flu and the total of 37 cases

Ministry of Health announced the death of infected with bird flu, a woman, aged 30, from Western Province.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Health on Saturday that he was bringing the total number of cases of the disease in Egypt (113) status and the number of deaths (37) Status of the onset of the disease in 2006 so far This is the situation tenth event of the death in 2010.

No it appears to be another person based on the total of three different governorates being mentioned.The two below were reported as H1N1 one was questionable due to mechanical translation issues and possibly some political motives.

Saw a hospital in the camp, and death of a woman (30 years) after testing positive situation with bird flu, and the deterioration of their health status and pneumonia, and was perceived Zefta-General had received Hanim Ahmad Hassanein (30 years) resident in the village Cbramless Center Zefta infected with a very high temperature and the emergence of similar symptoms of the disease, as a result of degradation, was transferred to a hospital in the camp, and found suffering from pneumonia, have been isolated case places allocated to it.

Blood samples were taken and the melancholy hours, and sent to regional laboratories in Tanta, and show a positive condition and infected with avian flu, but she died as a result of degradation, strongly, they took blood samples from all contacts of the case and sent to labs regional statement of the extent of her illness or not.

On the other hand held a hospital diets Mahalla two new suspected bird flu, and are guarded Magdy Hamed (8 years), school student, elementary Kafr el-Geneina, and Abdullah Saeed Abdullah (5 years) resident in the village of Amiriya.

Were isolated cases places allocated to it, and took blood samples to indicate the extent of the disease, infected or not.

We have 11 documented deaths for this year. Maybe the January death counts as a case for 2009 for the official Egyptian count?

The H5N1 virus remains a low level of infection, but eradication is not achieved. Last year was overshadowed by H1N1, which this year is almost gone (the incidence of influenza is still very low in the Northern Hemisphere). But it seems that has settled in some foci (Egypt, Indonesia and Vietnam are the countries that have reported cases this year, 23, 8 and 7, respectively).

If the current trend continues, it is likely that 2010 will be below the 45 cases, while in 2009 they were 73. But the virus remains a threat to the economy of farmers, every time you get an outbreak in poultry is slaughtered the whole farm.

What seems clear after eight years of expansion is that H5N1 has not mutated (something he shares with H1N1, which breaks with many theories about these virus) and not a pathogen become more easily transmissible to humans and that despite what we know of antivirals and vaccines, mortality remains at around 50%

This is a suspect report. As noted above in several of the posts the woman was from Gharbia Governorate not from Beheira Governorate. The source for the FAO report is "media" but no link or citation is given. Without more information this is not a credible location report.

Avian influenza - situation in Egypt - update 38

8 December 2010 -- </SPAN>The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 30-year-old female from Gharbia Governorate, developed symptoms on 28 November, was hospitalized on 1st of December, where she received oseltamivir treatment, and died on 2nd of December.
Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the case had exposure to sick and dead poultry.
The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).
