Mumbai dengue update: Govt makes reporting of dengue cases mandatory
Oct 31, 2012 at 8:19 AM

As dengue rages on, Bihar scrambles for fogging machines
Bihar,Health/Medicine, Wed, 07 Nov 2012IANS

Patna, Nov 7 (IANS) Dengue has already afflicted 1,150 people in Bihar this year, and it threatens to become an epidemic. Even so, the level of preparedness of the authorities is dismal -- only one of the four fogging machines in the state capital works.
Bihar Health Minister Ashwani Kumar Choubey, however, said Wednesday that there was no need to panic, and that the health department was taking measures to control the spread of dengue.
He said the state would buy new fogging machines, and acknowledged that three of the four machines in Patna do not work.
The one machine that works is in high demand in the VIP areas, and services the 29 municipal wards of Patna. An official of the Patna Municipal Corporation, requesting anonymity, said that Patna alone needs at least six such machines.
In Patna alone, as many as 313 cases of dengue have been confirmed by the health department. Bhagalpur district reported 232 cases.

Dengue nation: The rise and spread of a viral challenge

R. PRASAD

The Sunday Story India plays host to all four types of dengue viruses now. New scientific insight points to the role of migration in their spread. The dissemination trail of the viruses includes Sri Lanka, Africa and the Americas. Disturbingly, morbidity and mortality in the country are rising

The last few decades have seen dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, becoming one of the major public health concerns in the tropical and sub-tropical countries. So much so that over 40 per cent of the world?s population (2.5 billion) is at risk from dengue. According to the World Health Organisation, 50-100 million infections occur every year across the globe.

From less than 10 in the 1970s, the number of countries endemic for the disease has shot up to nearly 100. The major regions where dengue epidemic is seen are in southeast Asia, western Pacific, Africa, Americas and eastern Mediterranean.

Fortunately, of the millions who get infected, the majority do not even exhibit symptoms. Though self-limiting in many cases, a sizeable population suffers from dengue fever. The fever is also usually self-limiting and death is uncommon. But depending on several factors, including age, dengue fever can progress to severe forms. Nearly half-a-million suffer from dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), a severe form of the infection. Mortality is quite high in the case of dengue haemorrhagic fever. The extreme form is dengue shock syndrome, and the proportion of patients who die is indeed high.

Tamil Nadu has the most number of cases this year, at nearly 8,500, according to the National Vector Borne Disease Control provisional data (based on reports received from the State till November 5, 2012; http://nvbdcp.gov.in/den-cd.html.) West Bengal is second with about 5,700 cases. Tamil Nadu had the most number of cases in 2011 and 2007 too; it had the fifth and seventh highest case loads during 2010 and 2009 respectively. At 54, Tamil Nadu recorded the most number of deaths in 2012.
