Dengue claims six lives in West Bengal

During a health review meeting, CM asked the dept to issue an advisory to remove stagnant water from market places, schools, hospitals, railway stations among others.

KOLKATA: At least six persons have died of dengue this monsoon season in West Bengal after which chief minister Mamata Banerjee issued instructions to remove the stagnant water in urban areas so that mosquito larvae cannot breed.
Health department officials said the first dengue death was reported in June end and so far six people have died.
"So far in our state we had witnessed strain one and three of dengue virus, but since last year we are seeing a shift to strain two and four. Mortality is higher in these two strains as it quickly leads to multiple organ failure," state Director of Health Services Biswaranjan Satpathy said.

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Dengue has so far claimed 12 lives this rainy season as about 8,000 cases were reported in the country, with Karnataka registering five deaths, the government said today.

Kerala and Odisha have registered maximum number of cases with 2,252 and 2,171 incidents respectively.

Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir have not reported a single dengue case in June and July.

HYDERABAD: A forty six year old man reportdely died of dengue in a private hospital on Monday.

The patient, A Ramulu from Langer House developed multiple organ failure while undergoing treatment for the disease. However, Telangana Health officials on Tuesday said that they have yet to confirm the death.

When his fever did not subside in spite of medication, Ramulu got admitted to the hospital in the fourth week of July.

Additional director of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, Dr S Prabhavathi, said that they were investigating two deaths where dengue was suspected.

Deaths were reported at Safdarjung hospital
Two more dengue deaths were reported in the capital taking the count to three. The deaths were reported at the Centre-run Safdarjung Hospital.

?Two male patients succumbed to dengue infection at the hospital. The deaths were recorded on July 27. Both the victims were residents of Delhi and were being treated,? said a senior doctor of Safdarjung Hospital.

The hospital alone has seen 155 positive cases for dengue so far, confirmed the doctor. While some are admitted at the hospital, others are receiving treatment at home.

MANGALURU: While Dakshin Kannada district recorded nearly 400 cases of dengue, 17 deaths have been reported since January this year. However, as per the records of the department of health and family welfare, only three deaths have been confirmed due to dengue.
Though the department has recorded 17 deaths, the district-level death audit committee after the completion of auditing in 11 cases, has come to a conclusion that only three persons died due to dengue. Meanwhile, the department is yet to complete the death audit on six remaining cases.

With one more confirmed death due to dengue, the death toll due to the outbreak of the disease in West Bengal has gone up to 14, a state Health Department official said on Tuesday.

"In the last 48 hours, 150 new cases have been reported, taking the total number of dengue positive cases to 1,742 since January," Health Services Director Biswaranjan Satpathy said.


The latest death was reported on July 4 in South 24 Parganas but was confirmed on Tuesday as a dengue death.

South Calcutta reported its first dengue casualty since June on Tuesday, a seven-year-old girl, but the municipal authorities remained in denial and contested the cause of death even as the toll in the current outbreak rose to 15.

Rai Saha, a student of Class II at Dolna Day School in Kasba, and Srija Ghosh, a 22-year-old Bankura woman living and studying in Salt Lake, died of dengue-induced complications within a day of each other.

Kolkata: Twenty-four-year-old Ruman Ghosh, who died of dengue on Thursday, may have had a platelet overdose, according to doctors at AMRI Hospital in Salt Lake.
Ruman, a third-year student at Motijheel College and a resident of Baguiati, had been initially taken to Swasti Nursing Home in north Kolkata on Sunday evening, from where he was admitted to AMRI with blood infection and acute lung injury. His family alleged that negligence on the part of the nursing home led to his death.
"My son died of wrong treatment at the nursing home. Doctors at AMRI told us that had we taken him there a day earlier, he could have been saved. But the doctors at the nursing home never told us the truth and discharged him only when his condition was beyond treatment," said Ruman's father Ranjit, adding he was thinking of lodging a complaint against the nursing home.

DENGUE CASES SEE 126% RISE IN STATE THIS YEAR

With the monsoon season well on its way, medical experts say there has been a sharp rise in dengue cases across the state so far this year.

A whopping 1,778 cases of the mosquito-borne disease were recorded between January and July as against 786 cases in the corresponding period last year. This translates into a 126% rise.

The city areas of Nashik topped the list with the maximum number of cases, followed by Greater Mumbai, Thane and Pune.

The good news, state he alth officials said, is that the number of deaths have reduced considerably.

Experts, however, said that these cases are just the tip of the iceberg as most patients treated in private hospitals in Maharashtra are unreported despite the fact that dengue has been declared a notifiable disease.

Dengue claimed one more life in the city taking the death toll to at least four this season. Nazish, 38, succumbed to dengue shock syndrome at Apollo Hospitals on Friday afternoon. The deceased is the sister-in-law of Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan.

?The 38-year-old patient was admitted to Apollo Hospitals on Thursday around midnight. The platelet count was recorded to be 11,000 at the time of admission. The patient succumbed to dengue at 2 pm on Friday,? said a spokesperson, Apollo Hospitals. Nazish had fever for over three days.

NEW DELHI: The naked body of a five-year-old girl found near a garbage dump in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj sent the police in a tizzy on Tuesday. They spent the entire day probing if the girl had been sexually assaulted and killed only to come to know in the evening that it was a dengue death.
The girl's death has left her eight-year-old brother in a state of shock as he was eagerly awaiting her to return home for Rakshabandhan.
Family members of the child, Srishti, said that they had buried her on Monday evening. They were clueless about how the body was found near a garbage dump by a passerby.

Guwahati, Aug. 16: Dengue has claimed its first victim in Assam this year with a 36-year-old woman succumbing to the vector- borne disease that has assumed epidemic proportions with Kamrup (metro) identified as the worst-affected district.

Official sources today said the woman, hailing from Noonmati in Kamrup (Metro), died on August 9 after undergoing treatment for a day.

She had reportedly been suffering from fever for about six days. However, sources claim that she had also suffered from septicaemia which complicated the situation, leading to her death.
