Weingartl said in an interview...internationally, it is important to be able to work with the virus and be prepared because the virus is changing, and similarly to influenza it is quite possible it can ? obtain the ability to readily transmit from humans to humans."

Given how emerging viruses like Nipah can show up unexplained, Weingartl said there's reason to be on guard.

The Kerala outbreak "is definitely a concern," Weingartl said. "As a scientist, I would like to know how bad it is, what it is, what is the transmission route."

Nipah virus: No evidence to establish disease's Malaysia link, say police

Recently, on the basis of some media reports, it was rumoured that Sabith was in Malaysia a month before his death and had returned after he was down with fever.

KOZHIKODE:...
Kozhikode District Police Chief G Jaidev told 'Express' that a special squad have been formed to probe this. “The special team will inquire about all the things – travel history, people contacted and all. As part of this, we have so far got no authentic evidence to prove that Sabith has gone to Malaysia. Anyhow, we are double checking every fact,” he said.

On the other hand, the relatives of Sabith have come out in public with Sabith's passport which shows that he had not gone to Malaysia. The same fact was confirmed by 'Express' on Friday with his relative M T Ajnas who said Sabith had never visited Malaysia.

“He had gone to Dubai for a job there. He was there for nearly nine months or so. He returned to his hometown around five or six months ago. Since then, he had been working here and had not gone abroad. All such reports saying that Sabith had gone to Malaysia is wrong,” he said adding that when had come from Dubai he was suffering from ulcer for which Sabith had sought treatment here.

How doctors spotted nipah
G.S. Mudur May 25, 2018 00:00 IST

New Delhi: Critical-care doctor Anoop Kumar A.S. had realised within hours that the brain inflammation of the young man brought in that morning was unusual, and that it was something he'd never faced before in his 15 years of practice.

The twenty-something patient, admitted to Baby Memorial Hospital at Kozhikode in Kerala on May 17, had symptoms of encephalitis. Although patients with severe encephalitis are at risk of falling blood pressure, here the pressure seemed to be rising.

The patient also displayed heart muscle inflammation and his illness deteriorated rapidly. He died on May 18. The toll now stands at 12.

"Nothing seemed to work. There was another patient in the family (a 50-year-old woman) with similar symptoms, and we learnt the patient's brother had died similarly a few days earlier," Kumar said. The brother, believed to have been the first patient or "index case", had fallen sick on May 2 and died on May 5.

India steps up hunt for origin of mysterious brain-damaging Nipah virus

REUTERS - MUMBAI/KOCHI:

India began a fresh round of tests to trace the origin of a rare brain-damaging virus that has killed 13 people, a health official said on Monday, as initial tests on animals suspected of carrying the Nipah virus showed no sign of the disease.

The department was now collecting samples of fruit bats from Perambra, the suspected epicentre of the infection and nearby areas, Mohandas said.

Separately, tests run on dead bats in Himachal Pradesh were negative for Nipah, an official there said.

The Absence of Evidence for Nipah in Fruit Bats Is Not Evidence of Absence

There has been much speculation over the source of the Nipah virus that triggered an outbreak in Kozhikode, Kerala. Last week, the state animal husbandry department captured and tested insectivorous bats (Megaderma spasma) from a well in the compound belonging to a family whose members were the virus?s first victims ? and found no virus in them.

News reports have pointed out that the virus?s reservoir is different: fruit bats of the species Pteropus medius (formerly Pteropus giganteus). A fresh effort is underway to capture and test fruit bats ? but the delay could mean that the virus may not be found in them at all. Should this happen, it still wouldn?t mean that bats were not the source of the virus.

This is because it is difficult to find a bat that is infected.
