Increase in dengue looms large in the city

The number of dengue cases in the Colombo city could increase in the coming weeks as 157 dengue cases have been reported in May alone, the Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam told the Sunday Observer. He said there had been a sudden increase in the number of dengue cases in the Colombo city in April with over 200 cases reported and this trend is likely to continue this month too. Three dengue deaths including a five-year-old and 1,177 cases have been reported this year in the Colombo city.

Dr. Kariyawasam said that there was a 20 percent increase in the number of dengue cases in the city compared to the corresponding period last year and the Borella area was more vulnerable to the disease.

Dengue, a mosquito-born disease that causes hemorrhagic fever, has claimed 35 lives so far this year in Sri Lanka, statistics at the Health Ministry of Sri Lanka revealed.

The number of dengue patients seeking treatment from government hospitals alone has reached 13,500 so far this year, according to the ministry. There were 44,000 positive cases reported last year and of that figure, 185 had died of the disease, which was the highest ever reported.

I don't know where the figure of 35 deaths comes from, but I just don't believe it. 35 deaths from 13,500 cases is a cfr of around 0.26% which is way lower than Sri Lanka has managed in previous years. Officially 2012 had a cfr of .4% which agrees with the figure of 185 deaths (quoted above) from 44,500 cases last year. But last year's official figure is suspect. On Dec 12 a total of 264 deaths were reported, this dropped to 220 by Dec 31st, rose to 227 by Jan 13th, dropped to 200 by Jan 31st before falling again to 185. The higher numbers would place the cfr between .5 and .6% . I will continue to base my estimates on a cfr of .4-.6%

Health Ministry gears to battle dengue menace

The Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry is once again concealing facts ? facts that would alarm the public and bring disrepute to the country?s Ministry of Health.


The number of deaths due to dengue has been taken out of the Unit?s website. Ministry spokesperson, W.A.D. Wanninayake, refused to give statistics on the number of deaths. This is reminiscent of the tactics employed by the Health Ministry last October when the Unit refused to publicize figures on the number of people who died of dengue fever in the first nine months of 2012. Director of the Unit, Dr. Paba Palihawadana, said then it is the ?Health Ministry policy? to refrain from giving out statistics on the number of deaths due to dengue fever.


In October 2012, the number of dengue patients in the three months preceding it, that is, July, August and September, recorded a steep high so much so Minister of Health, Maithripala Sirisena, pulled up his socks and requested help from Cuba. He personally requested Cuban Ambassador in Sri Lanka, Castro Guevera, to help dispatch a consignment of the BTI larvicide from her country.


However, despite the Health Ministry?s ardent efforts in eradicating the dengue menace, the mosquito is emerging vibrant and stronger. This time around most of the victims are school children. According to statistics of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), some 1,200 suspected dengue cases were reported in the Western Province in the first four months of this year. Of this number, 55% were children.


Following this revelation, the CMC Public Health Officers are on a rampage inspecting all school premises for water logged areas and other breeding sites that could promote the breeding of the mosquitoes. Already 55 schools have been served with notices and the CMC is taking steps to take 12 schools to Court for not heeding the call to clean up school premises.


According to the statistics of the Epidemiology Unit, the number of suspected dengue cases reported in the first five months of this year is 13,500. Some 46% of the cases were reported from the Western Province. Wanninayake said the figures are increasing everyday and the situation is getting out of control. According to the figures given by the CMC, in 2011 there had been 173 deaths and in 2012, 220 deaths.

Over 40 persons have died of dengue fever during the past five months while over 14,000 dengue cases have been reported islandwide, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

He said medical specialists are of the view that due to the prevailing rainy weather conditions and public indifference, dengue could reach epidemic proportions within the next two months. The spokesman said over 46 percent of dengue cases have been reported from the Western Province, especially Colombo and Gampaha districts. The majority of victims are schoolchildren. Health authorities inspected 147 schools and found the conditions of 63 schools unsatisfactory.

This year the CMC has recorded 1,450 cases of dengue. Compared to last year there was a 23 percent increase in dengue cases in the city. In the month of May there is 20 percent decrease in the dengue cases compared to the corresponding month last year.

?That is going down. But what is alarming is that more and more schoolchildren aged between 5 and 20 are getting ill. If we compare statistics of the past few weeks it tells us that about 70 percent of patients are children. That is why we started inspecting schools?, he said.

More than 500 cases of dengue reported daily in Colombo

If dengue is eradicated in Colombo, the number of reported cases from around the island could be reduced by 50%, the Health Ministry said yesterday.

Speaking to Ceylon Today, Health Ministry Spokesperson, W.M.D. Wanninayake, said over 500 cases of dengue are reported each day from Colombo alone.

The State security officials and the Urban Development Authority (UDA), carried out an intensive dengue eradication programme Saturday (8), focusing on the Colombo city limits in an attempt to counter the high risk of dengue becoming an epidemic.

Govt's top brass indifferent to dengue menace

Officials of the Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council who are conducting dengue inspections in the Colombo city have found that some gardens of Government Ministers have also turned into mosquito breeding grounds apart from the premises of Government offices the Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said.

Dengue rages unabated

The number of dengue patients is on the rise in Colombo, while campaigns to clean up premises of schools and universities are continuing.

According to the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam, 1,404 cases had been detected in the first half of the year. He said the rains had exacerbated the problem, and in the first two weeks of June, as much as 166 suspected cases of dengue, including six deaths, had been reported.

Steps to combat dengue in Kurunegala district

Over 1,800 positive dengue patients have been reported from remote areas of the Kurunegala district alone by the end of June 2013. Seven out of them have already died. Consequently, Divisional Secretary areas of Kurunegala, Ibbagamuwa, Mawathagama, Rideegama, Narammala, Pannala, Alawwa, Polgahawela and Mallawapitiya have been declared as Dengue-prone zones by the Ministry of Health.
